ate community, thank you for your generous contribution.

Northminster is blessed to have many members who graciously volunteer to run projects for the Church, particularly mission proj-ects. Few, however, stick it out for ten years. We have two such dedicated members who have de-voted that much time to heading up the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Nancy Flamme has been responsi-ble for IHN the last ten years and will be passing the torch to some-one else this year. Lynne Tobin preceded Nancy in the job for the first ten years — she’s the member who actually started IHN at North-minster.

The mission of the Interfaith Hos-pitality Network is to mobilize faith communities to help low income families achieve and sustain inde-pendence. IHN unites religious congregations to assist homeless families by providing accommo-dations and meals for three to five families at their facility for one

Thank You, Nancy and Lynne!ing the homeless families have an enriching experience.

On behalf of the entire congrega-tion and staff, we want to thank Nancy and Lynne for their extraor-dinary service. Northminster will be forever indebted to them. If you happen to see them at Church, be sure to extend your own personal thanks.

week. Northminster hosts families three times a year. Organizing each IHN event at Northminster is not a small job by any means. Beds and meals must be arranged for the homeless families who will be staying at the Church, and volun-teers from the congregation must be lined up to work at the event. Lynne and Nancy have made the event a success every time, help-

May brings us spring flowers, spring showers, and of course, the annual PCUSA Pentecost Offering. This special gift allows the church to impact young people, especial-ly the needs of at-risk children. Our congregation retains 40% of the Pentecost offering to make an impact in the lives of young people within our own community. In the past, we have directed our Pente-

cost offering to our mission partner, Westminster Neighborhood Min-istries. Last year, our contribution aided in their summer camp pro-gram for children.

Sunday, May 15th is the official collection date. Look for the spe-cial Pentecost envelopes provided in the church pews. The Mission Team, the young people of North-minster, and those in our immedi-

Walking For Dreams - May 22 On Sunday, May 22, our Mission Team partner, Westminster Neigh-borhood Services, is participating in a 5k family and pet walk to raise funds and awareness for their work with families on the Indianapolis east side. And they’re looking for a few good two-legged AND four-legged “foot” soldiers to join them!

Registration begins at 1:00 pm at Buggs Temple at the north end of the downtown Canal. The walk begins at 2:00 pm. If you haven’t walked the Canal, this is the perfect opportunity to soak in a lovely area of our city AND contribute to our local community at the same time.

Walking for Dreams has no regis-tration or entry fee. All proceeds go directly to the families that WNS assists (except for the direct costs of printing signs.)

Let’s show our support for WNS! Organize your team of fellow NPC members, friends, and family. Gather pledges. Get some exercise.

Above all, have fun, all for a won-derful cause.

To register, go to www.walkingfor-dreams.org. Contact Paula Zieger at [email protected] 317-245-8107 with questions.

This year, BTS Xtravaganza orga-nizers’ goal is to prepare 1,100 stu-dents in Washington Township to start the 2016 school year with new clothes, shoes, packed backpacks, and health exams.

And Northminster, led by Jerry Gray, looks to step up again for some clothes collecting, launder-ing, sorting, and packing. Last year, 30% of our members partic-ipated. Let’s go for 50% this year! YOU can participate by taking a bag of clothes home to clean and fold, starting in June. Or, you can assist in collecting and sorting, packing, setting up and participat-

ing at the event, which is Sunday, July 31.

Start collecting gently used cloth-ing (coats, shirts, pants/slacks, dresses, sweaters, winter gear) for students grades 1-8. If you are unable to commit time and effort, consider a monetary contribution towards the purchase of new under-wear and jeans.

If you have any questions or want further details, contact Jerry Gray (H: 317-841-7622/C: 317-627-5422 or [email protected]).

Back-to-School Extravaganza

Happy Anniversary for Food Pantry Service Acknowledgment and thanks to all those at Northminster, especially the NorthStars, who have been volunteering at the Second Presbyterian Food Pantry for the past twelve months. You have made a dif-ference in people’s lives. We continue to call for recruits (email John Reed at [email protected]) and to collect paper and plastic bags (place them in the bin opposite the church office).

What Do Deacons Do?

The Denver mission trip is ap-proaching quickly. On May 15, our team will be commissioned during the 11am worship service. Our group will be working along-side Emma Moore, who is serving as a Presbyterian Church Young Adult Volunteer for the DOOR Program of Denver. DOOR is a gateway for encounter-ing the city through the eyes, ears, and heart of God. They are dedicat-ed to providing life-changing expe-riences for all participants, rooted in relationship and solidarity, with local communities and neighbor-hoods. All programming grows out of a commitment to mutual respect and thoughtful reflection.

Our multi-age group of six adults and six youth will fly into Denver on June 2. We start with an ori-entation on Thursday night; work all day on Friday at Metro Caring. As Denver’s leading hunger-relief

organization, Metro Caring meets people’s immediate need for food while also addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty. On Saturday we will tour the city and have a gentrification, learning tour experience. We will be eating many of our meals and be lodged at a Menno-nite Church, near to where we will be serving. Please keep the following partici-pants in prayer: Ruth Moore, Julie Shannon, Katie Bulloff, Jody Yohn, Melissa Hopkins, Zach, Megan, Aidan, & Allison Yohn, Emma Longo, and Leah and Stella Shan-non. Please ask us about our expe-rience when we return!

Denver Mission Trip – by Julie Shannon

On September 18, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, we will be serving our community by teaming up with five of our mission partners for service projects. These service projects will replace our usual Sunday ser-vices. We will be partnering with these five organizations:

Julian CenterBrooke’s PlaceDamien Center

Dayspring CenterBroad Ripple Village Association

Projects will be available for all skill levels. There will also be activities offered at church for all ages. Child care will be provided at church.

Stay tuned for more details on the projects and don’t forget to wear your Northminster t-shirt that day!

Day of Caring – by Nancy Flamme

The Deacons want to thank the congregation for their generous support of the spring plant sale, and t-shirt “spirit” wear purchases. With your help we have raised over $3,000 dollars for the Deacons Fund and their ministry programs – like the program descriptions below.

School 55 Honors Banquet – the Deacons will be hosting an honors dinner for all the honor role students on June 2nd. The deacons provide the meal, certificates and prizes for all the children.

Flowers for School 55 – the Deacons will be helping School 55 plant some flow-ers around the school on Garden Day on May 24.

Community Picnic – the Deacons will be helping host the Community picnic on Saturday, May 21 (see article, front cover). We will all be wearing our new NPC blue tee-shirts and hope you will consider helping as well. To volunteer, contact Dolly Craft at [email protected] or go to the Featured Events page of our website.

Church School in May - by Debbie Bulloff

May Birthdays

Consider the scripture and talk with your friends and family about the question at the end of each week’s lesson. Copies of all of the Bible Stories for Lent through Easter-tide from the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum are available in your child’s classroom. We are follow-ing the Lectionary for Year C.

May 1Focus Scripture Acts 16: 9-15 The Holy Spirit carries us in di-rections we may not have chosen and to margins where we may not have gone. The first convert to the early church in Europe was Lyd-ia, an Asian woman (from Asia Minor). Lydia and Paul serve as disciples together; they minister to

one another and to their compan-ions and households. In what ways have you experienced and practiced ministry that is reciprocal?

May 8Focus Scripture Acts 16: 16-34 The children of the Church School will consider opportunities to witness and serve others when they hear the story of Paul and Silas being thrown in jail for helping a slave girl. How are we called to witness and serve today?

Gifts for GradsFor almost a decade, Jackie Schmidt, in honor of her late hus-band Marvin, has been granting college scholarships to students who attend Indiana colleges and universities (private or state). This “Teri Thomas Scholarship” began around 2006. In the beginning, one name was drawn out of a bowl and that student received the scholar-ship. Jackie changed that after a couple of years and began granting scholarships to every graduate who attends an Indiana School – up to five last year! This is approaching almost $20,000 of financial support for Northminster graduates. This money is very appreciated by the families, as college is an increas-ingly costly endeavor. Jackie and her family are very generous and view this is as a way to honor the memories and lives of her late husband Marvin, and late daughter Anne. What an amazing gift of love and support to provide these young people. Amen, and thank you, Schmidt family!

Our 2016 NPC graduates are: An-drew Schmahl, Juliette Hardesty, Katherine Ruegger, Bradley Hill, William Boris and Logan Smithers.

Foundation Minute – by Robert Rothrock

When supervising the rebuilding of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London (which took about 50 years to com-plete) architect Christopher Wren asked three different laborers what they were doing. One said he was cutting stone. The second said he was earning six shillings. The third said, “I’m helping Sir Christopher Wren build a great cathedral!” How are you helping build something great for the future?

Making a bequest is easy and costs you nothing during your lifetime. Your assets remain in your con-trol. After you make provisions for your family, you can give a gift to your church by including a bequest statement in your will. There is a quick, simple way to make a bequest. I will cover that next time.

Library NewsWho is my neighbor? We have a new book display on how we and our neighbors worship God. Just in time for VBS/Arts Camp! Stop by the Library (take the elevator to the second floor and turn right) and check out titles for both children and adults about loving God, ourselves and our neighbors.

Sound & Spirit is proud to wel-come back the amazing Rose Ensemble, Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in our sanctuary as they celebrate their 20th Anniversary. You are invited to wear your floral shirts. This free concert is The Last Queen of Hawaii: Music from the Soul of the Hawaiian Saga.

Founded in 1996 by Artistic Di-rector Jordan Sramek, The Rose Ensemble has achieved an inter-national reputation as a premiere American early music ensemble. Each performance illuminates centuries of rarely heard repertoire, bringing to modern audiences research from the world’s manu-script libraries and fresh perspec-tives on history, culture, politics and spirituality from around the globe. With ten critically acclaimed recordings and a diverse selection of concert programs, the group has thrilled audiences across the United States and Europe with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and over 25 languages.

Unique for Sound & Spirit, the concert will take us on a journey through Hawaii’s musical heritage

– steeped in tradition, transformed by world influences and reborn through the struggle to carry the past into the present. This is an ar-tistic legacy that looks and sounds nothing like a stereotype. Don’t expect Don Ho. But do expect to ask for an encore – hana hou.

The Rose Ensemble is the recip-ient of the 2005 Chorus America Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, and first prize winner in both sacred and secular mu-sic categories at the 2012 Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain (part of the European Choral Grand Prix). The group’s concerts and record-

ings have been called “first class” (Neuss-Grevenbroicher Zeitung), “impassioned and brightly alive” (Choral Journal) and “engaging . .. satisfying” (Gramophone). Founder Jordan Sramek received the 2010 Louis Botto Award from Chorus America “for entrepreneurial zeal.”

Thanks to the financial support of sponsors and the free-will offerings collected during performances, Sound & Spirit holds fast to free celebrations of art and artistry in Broad Ripple and the surrounding community. Tell your friends. Childcare will be available.
