Let’s out do last year.
Pony News May 2016
A pril was a busy month loaded with a wide variety of activities. On the 9th we participated in the Daffodil Parade by supplying transport for the Educators of the Year, VIP's such as Rhubarb, the Taco-ma Rainier's mascot, a council member, a couple of Sea Gals, royalty
from Canada, their float was in an accident on their way down to the parade, and of course, our ever popular Special Unit. We had a great time. A big thank you to Korum and Lakewood Ford for allowing us to borrow a couple beautiful convertibles for the day. Your car show committee was been hard at work collecting sponsors, donations, raffle items, contents for the goody bags, and vendors to make this year's car show one of the best yet. The t-shirts are in and they look great. Contact Missy Willert or Nancy Freeman if you'd like one, or ten! If you have any items you'd like to do-nate for the raffle contact Joanie Nordlund. Check out the current Volunteer sign up sheet later in this edition to see where you can help the day of the show. April 17th was National Mustang Day. Monika Kirkland organized a great day; she even made sure that Mother Nature gave us fantastic cruising weather. This event was so well attended, we had several non-members participating too. The LeMay Museum welcomed us with coffee and donuts as well as a photo op to kick it off. With such great weather and so many cruisers, there were a few unavoidable glitches. We would like to put together a "Cruise" kit with some items such as walk-ie talkie radios. So if you have some of your own, and if you don't, they can be pur-chased very inexpensively, it's a good idea to use them to communicate during a cruise. Make sure you let Bill Norman know if you plan to attend the Winery Cruise, as he will be supplying sandwiches. Remember, wine tasting is not required, but fun and fellowship is. Our Friday Night Dinner Out was another hit. Due to some logistical problems, we changed the location this month to The "New" Old Spaghetti Factory. They took great care of us on such short notice and the food was delicious. This month we will be going to Farelli's Pizza. A group of us spent a few hours volunteering at EFN repackaging 5,600 lbs of fro-zen peas. I think we have all had our fill of "Frozen" and pea/pee jokes! We had a good time. If you haven't joined us at EFN yet, you might want to consider it. We will be going back in the fall.
Korum Ford has asked the Club for help moving cars for the “Wallup in Puyallup.” We did this last year and it was a blast. We will meet at Korum on Thursday, May 12 at 6pm to move cars from the dealership to the fairgrounds. On Sunday, May 15 at 7pm we will move them back to Korum. If you are interested in helping, please email me ([email protected]) with the day(s) you are available to help by May 6. Coming up this month we have: 3rd-Board meeting 10th-Car Show Meeting, @ Bill Norman's, everyone is invited 15th-Rainier Winery Cruising and Tasting 17th-General Membership Meeting 20th-Friday Night Dinner Out-Farelli's Pizza Hope to see you at one of our events this month,

Welcome Visitors, New Members, and Re-turning Members
Membership Report – Nancy Freeman – PCMC is having a great membership renewal, with 67% of 2015 members renewing their memberships. PCMC has 83 memberships, 10 charter/honorary memberships totaling 93 memberships, 144 members.
MCA Update – Nancy Freeman – MCA board will be having a meeting at the end of April for a By-Law vote. The first By-Law change – When a new treasurer is voted in to office, there will be an audit of the books. The second By-Law change – MCA wants to have a 3 tiered mem-bership. Standard – as it is now – hard copy of Mustang Times, discount on shows, and the right to vote. Digital – emailed copy of Mustang Times, discount on shows, and the right to vote. Associate – no Mustang Times, still have ven-dor benefits, enter MCA shows, but no vote and can’t hold office. MCA is trying to draw new members. Questions were raised about the cost and what the point was to joining MCA to receive no benefits or input into the club per at-taining to the Associate membership.

Mr. Ugly is a 91 Mustang LX Hatchback, 5.0.
I grew up in the mid west 45 minutes away from a drag strip so Foxes were very popular. My plans for the car are to drive it till the wheels fall off. The only upgrades I plan on doing are safe-ty and performance, hence the cars name. Last winter I completely overhauled the suspension and future plans are to replace all of the steer-ing components.

Pony News May 2016
I was wondering what to write about this month when a very cool piece of membership news came across email.
Jim, Debbie and Landon Lively are PCMC members. Landon is a junior at Seattle Chris-tian School and is part of their robotics team. Here is what James wrote about Landon and his team:
“They [the Robotics team] compete against 148 schools in the PNW area...most much bigger and well funded. It is with First Robotics. A great program to spread STEM [Science, Tech-nology, Engineering, and Math] throughout the public schools and community. VERY big deal and very competitive but teaches the best mo-rality to the kids and gracious professionalism. They got funding from NASA and other large corps as it takes about $40K just to start a team. They won the Rookie All Star Award as well as the Industrial Design Award. This is al-most never given to a rookie team as it recog-nizes excellence in engineering, design, and build.”
“Not bad for a first year team and it all started with building mustangs………”
Sincerely,
James P. Lively
Young people find their interests and future ca-reers in many ways. It sounds like this young man may have found his in the family garage. When I asked James, he said that Landon wants to study aerospace engineering.
Go Landon!
Those who have built their own cars, rebuilt old one’s or repaired them for show, daily driving or whatever the purpose, know that there is a great deal of reward in seeing pieces come to-gether. I have had the pleasure, as an educa-
tor, of watching these First Robotics teams come together, and build, compete, win or not, grow and share their common interests. The fact that the Mustang might have had any part in this experience for Landon and his team is that much more exciting.
This also makes me wonder if this story is just the beginning. How many other young people can find their passions in various aspects of re-building or restoring classic cars such as the Mustang? I see young people with great car en-thusiasm that is just bubbling under the surface as they are not yet sure what to do with it. I met a 4 year old not too long ago that was looking at a muscle car and telling his mother what kind of car it was, “no, it’s a b’cuda, Mom.” In Lan-don’s case, “all the robotics and love for build-ing has come from an appreciation of these old classic automobiles,” says James.
Landon has grown up with this passion. According to Jim, Mustangs have been “a lifelong love in our family. In fact I [James] still have my original 1969 that I got when I was 16 years old.” Growing up around cars and restoration, it isn’t hard to imagine where Landon’s interest has come from. The family currently has a 1989 that they have / are restor-ing and Landon bought his 1st Mustang last year, a 1967. They “completely rebuilt the en-gine, transmission, suspension, interior, differ-ential, etc.”

Daffodil Parade April 9
Sure there is fun in rebuilding an early model Mustang, especially as a family, but that isn’t all of it. I recently heard it said that restoring cars is about the saving of art and history. Mustangs are pretty young in the classic car story, but what history can we save with these cool cars. The art and beauty is certainly there. Congratu-lations, Landon. You have wanted to be a PCMC member since you were 10 and now you are and may I say, you are an inspiration.
Maybe it is just because we recently purchased a mid-50’s Ford truck that we will be rebuilding to a degree, but I think we have several mem-bers, such as Landon and his family that might be able to teach us a thing or 2 about this pro-cess.
What do you say? Share with me your tips.
Let’s start with finding the right car to begin the process. How would you go about find-ing it and bringing it home?

Yellow, yellow every-
where you look. What
a beautiful sight as the
area welcomed in
spring with daffodil’s,
marching bands, royal courts, goats, floats, and
many other groups as well as perfect parade
weather.
We had about 20 some
cars meet at Burger
Ranch to begin our pa-
rade day. Thanks to Terry
and Deborah Howells
(club members and spon-
sors) for opening up early just for us.
Though it was a bit of a bumpy start, the parade
itself was a great success.
We had 6
different
entries this
year:
#22 Sea
Gals: Bill
Norman
#30 Educators of the Year: Steve Khambata,
Missy Willert, Monika Kirkland, Bob Frender,
Greg Robbins, Tina Fisher, Rick Nordlund, and
Dave and Sue Velasco

#58 Council Member Joyce McDonald: Tina

#91 Special Unit: Jerry Murphy, his son-in-law
& grandson, Paul & Heidi Geise, Dennis Willert,
Kim & Robert Bailey and kids, Jannadean Han-
son, Wayne Hanson Jr, Leland Schiro, Chuck

Peach Festival
Royalty: Tom Hen-
derson
On the special units side, our coupes started as
7 in Tacoma, grew to 9 for Puyallup, shrunk to
4 for Sumner, and ended with 3 for Orting. We
lost some to other commitments including
meals, and some manuals sacrificed their
clutches for the cause.
Jerry Murphy organized 3 young men from De-
Molay who faithful-
ly, through all 4
parades, marched
in front of us carry-
ing our banner. I
think they were a
little tired and somewhat sunburned but
seemed to be enjoying themselves. I don’t think
it hurt that we were marching behind a float
with young girls on it and 2 behind the
“cowgirls” and their goats.
We heard shouts to “rev ‘em up” to which sev-
eral gave the crowd what they wanted. Lots of
cheers, “nice cars,” and “wows” as we moved
through the streets of the 4 communities.
There was even some education as parents
could explain the difference between one kind
of pony and the other
or one kind of horse
power and the other.
All-in-all it was a
fun day with lots of
sun and lots of smiles from old and young.
Hopefully you were able to get out to one of the
towns to catch us live, but if not, maybe you
were able to catch us on Kong TV; they did a
rebroadcast of the Puyallup leg of the parade.
From Missy, “For those of us that drove educa-
tors this year it was fun to hear the crowds in
every city cheer, clap and yell out accolades.
As a teacher, it was very nice; we don’t very
often get that kind
of treatment. “
We have to send
out a special
thank you to
Korum and Lake-
wood Ford. They
each loaned us a
convertible to drive in the parade. Whether or
not members drove only thru Tacoma and
Puyallup or went all the way thru Orting, we
had a great time.

National Mustang Day West Seattle Cruise April 17
What a great day to
celebrate the Mus-
tang in Washington
state...lots of sun,
perfect cruising
weather. So perfect that instead of 20 cars we
had 44...club members and others who saw our
post and decid-
ed to
“crash” (pardon
the pun) the
cruise. Fun for
all.
From this
members perspective, it couldn’t have gotten
any better!
Fabulous job,
Monica Kirk-
land. After 3 or
4 trial runs on
your own you
ended up with
the most cars we have ever had on a cruise and
we all ended up at Claim Jumpers for lunch.
We were
invited by
Lemay
America’s
Car Muse-
um to stop
by for a pho-
to op on the
Plaza. I am not sure we could have gotten an-
other Mustang into our space. We had coffee
and donuts and took several photos of all of our
members and cars in front of the museum.
As we traveled through the beauty of Des
Moines, Burien, Normandy Park, and West Se-
attle we saw the
Sound, lovely neigh-
borhoods, and
….wait….what is
that? Another Mus-
tang Club coming
the other way down
the same route with
what was another 20 or so Mustangs. (Pacific
Cascade MC)
The Ponies were out and running on their spe-
cial day!
Of course, it
wouldn’t be a
PCMC cruise
without a stop
for lunch. We
ate at Claim
Jumpers where the wait staff did a great job
with this larger than expected group. It was
such a good time, we had a couple become

FNDO The Old Spaghetti Factory April 22
Pasta, bread, soup, salad, dessert...No one left
hungry.
The Old Spa-
ghetti Factory
welcomed 18 of
our club mem-
bers for our
monthly dinner out. The service was great, the
food delicious, and the conversation, as always,
full of fun and jocularity. At my end of the table I
heard everything from where you can get the
best customized peanut butter to “it doesn’t mat-
ter what the show is...it is Tom Selleck.”
Don’t miss our
next dinner out
on May 20 at
Farrelli’s on
Canyon.
Emergency Food Network April 23
Never at a loss for things to do at this club!
Saturday morning, 15 members showed up in
Tacoma at the Emergency Food Network. EFN
repackages foods to be distributed to food
banks around the area.
We have done apples, oranges, squash, oats,
and corn just in recent trips. What will it be this
time….I can still hear the 4 hours of scooping,
bagging, dropping, and the unlimited and unfil-
tered jokes….PEAS! Cold and green, peas.
We repackaged
5600 pounds of
them. All while
listening to great
tunes and non-
stop puns.
In all seriousness, it was great fun for a great
cause. I will say that I saw few being thrown
which I couldn’t say for the oranges.
After packaging we all went to Ivar’s for a great
and well deserved lunch (no peas in sight).
(All pea-ed out)
(They made me
say it!)

Hooked on Driving
Hooked on Driving (HOD) is a community of indi-
viduals who share a passion for driving their cars.
With a focus on safety, coaching, learning and
fun, HOD drivers are able to experience their cars
at a higher level on a track than would be safe or
prudent on the public highways. As a result driv-
ers gain a new appreciation of their car – its capa-
bilities, strengths and weaknesses; as well as
their own skills as a driver and the need to devel-
op those skills. If you would like to test your skills
or learn new ones, contact Don.

In Memory of Eric Cobb
On September 9, 2013 club member Eric Cobb
lost his fight with cancer. He was only 26. Eric
had a gentle heart and a kind smile. He was a
Ford man. He enjoyed showing his 2003 Black
Cobra and his 2013 Blue with Black Striped
GT500 (Best of Show at the Korum Mini Show
2013). Eric and his dad, Dan restored his grand-
pa’s 1967 F100 that they showed together. He
loved to talk cars and work on them with 1988
Fox Body and 1964 Galaxie 500 projects. Eric
loved to humor me as I told him about all the
Pierce County Mustang Club adventures coming
up, and he even let me drag him to some like the
Poker Run and Relay for Life. He made a large
impacted in all of our lives and hearts.
We miss you, Eric.

Fun Facts: (from Pete Freeman)
The phrase “rule of thumb” is derived from
an old English law, which stated that you
couldn’t beat your wife with anything wider
than your thumb. (There was no mention
of what the husband could be beaten
with.)
Trivia:
Q—Prior to 2012, how many years was
there a BOSS Mustang?
A—3 (1968, 1970, and 1971)
Shinoda was asked what project he was working on and he said, “the boss’s car.” Therefore the name, BOSS. Homage to Bunkie Knudson.
