FOR ARTS’ SAKE

‘Break a Leg’ in Mayby Aaron Chatha

This May you may be looking for some activities for the kiddies, especially as the school year nears its end. The Calgary International Children’s Festival takes place near the end of the month, with catchy music, explo-sive science and even pyjama parties for kids K – 6. Some of the biggest shows include The Rainbow Fish, the Okee Dokee Brothers and the always entertaining Doktor Kaboom.

In the world of children’s classics, the window is closing the see Theatre Calgary’s stunning musical version of The Secret Garden. Relive the classic children’s book as a young orphan discovers the key to a neglected garden – which itself is the key to her family’s heart.

While the kiddies have their fun during the day, the adults can get their funny bones tickled by the hilari-ous – and often shocking – Jimmy Carr, who performs for one night.

Welcome to the good weather (which definitely took its time to arrive) with the laid-back tunes of Toronzo Can-non. Born and raised in Chicago, Cannon used to drive a bus by day and electrify blues clubs at night. Cannon has become a star in the blues scene for his soulful bal-lads, swinging shuffles and earing blues anthems, which he will bring to the Martha Cohen Theatre.

Finally, in the wake of Montreal, Columbine, Orlando and other tragedies, Downstage theatre takes an in-sightful and biting look at the modern world in Miss Katelyn’s Grade Threes Prepare for the Inevitable. The show was the winner of Best Production at the 2015 Montreal Fringe Festival, as it runs through panic, pre-vention and paranoia in a post-truth world.

May the arts be with you Calgary!

This column is provided by Arts Commons. Located in the heart of Calgary’s vibrant downtown core, Arts commons is home to six different distinct performance venues.

RESIDENT PERSPECTIVES

People and their pets are living longer with better health care, nutrition, and improved living conditions. I see pets in their late teens regularly, and geriatric medi-cine is advancing in leaps and bounds. Never dismiss changes in your older pet as “just old age”, rather inves-tigate, this may be something we can treat. Quality of life for both us and the furry ones should always be our objective.

Annual physical examinations and even sometimes bi-annual examinations are necessary. Veterinarians discuss exercise tolerance, travel, changes in food and water consumption as they examine your pet for mass-es, aches and pains, and anything else that raises con-cern. Examination includes a dental exam for fractured or infected painful teeth that can affect other organ systems. Good health care starts with the examination and may extend to further testing including bloodwork, urinalysis, x-rays, and ultrasounds.

Diet is another cornerstone of any older pet’s health needs. Don’t justify weight gain by saying “but treats are all he enjoys now”. An obese pet has difficulty mov-ing, arthritic joints have to work harder, and stress is placed on all systems including the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. It’s easier if a pet is lean and not wheezing with exertion.

Consider a geriatric diet around eight to ten years of age in cats and small dogs, and in large dogs earlier. Specific diets have been formulated for many medical problems. Some diets are formulated for joints and include prod-ucts for enhanced mobility and to slow the progress of degenerative joint disease. There is even a diet to try and slow the progress of canine dementia. Pets that seem confused, have abnormal sleep cycles, and accidents in

the house may be experiencing dementia or cognitive dysfunction associated with old age.

Unlimited water is imperative in the elderly pet. If your pet begins to drink and urinate excessively this is an early symptom of many serious, but often treatable, ge-riatric diseases.

People use physiotherapy or try alternative therapies for aches and pains. These therapies are equally benefi-cial to our pets. Old bodies get relief with heat packs, massage, range of motion exercises, and physiotherapy. Acupuncture, cranio-sacral therapy, chiropractic medi-cine, and numerous herbal and homeopathic formulas are used successfully to treat old joints, muscles and bone. To this end remember five or ten minutes gentle exercise three times daily is preferable to forty minutes of intense exercise with fragile pets. Like you, pets stiff-en up and hurt! Older pets also have a reduced toler-ance for heat and cold extremes.

Aged pets find it more difficult to groom and may need help. Cats may not be able to contort themselves to reach places on their backs and hind end and fur can become matted. Older pets may become crankier if sore, and some are more easily startled if their hearing and sight is failing. These pets need closer supervision outside the home, and protection from small children startling or pouncing on them.

Remember the benefits of the human animal bond has been credited with extending our lives and quality of our lives too. We need our old pets as much as they need us, but also remember senior pets deserve gentle retire-ment. If all of your best efforts can no longer keep your friend comfortable and there are more sick days than not, it may be time to say good-bye. This is the least self-ish thing you will ever do for an old loved companion.

Al-though how habit, portions or varieties of food affect the person will be discussed, this conference will also aim to persuade consumers, health professionals, and policy makers to think about nutrition, and associated health crises, differently. SAFE & SOUND

National Paramedic Services WeekMay 27 – June 2, 2018National Paramedic Services Week honours the para-medic profession and recognizes the men and women of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providing this key public service. It is also an opportunity for the public to better understand the important role EMS has within both the health care system and our communities.

The year’s national theme is, Paramedics: Health. Com-munity. You.

Whether directly, or indirectly, every Albertan has felt the importance of the service paramedics provide. Para-medics are trained health care professionals who sta-bilize and treat patents before and during transport to hospital. In some areas of the province, paramedics are now working side-by-side their health care colleagues in hospitals and community care facilities.

•There are over 4,000 EMS practitioners and 550 ambu-lances in the Alberta Health Services system province-wide;•Approximately 5,500 patients will be transferred by

fixed wing aircraft through contracted air ambulance providers in Alberta this year;•EMS dispatch receives over 500,000 ground ambu-

lance calls each year.

EMS practitioners across the Alberta and Canada will be celebrating National Paramedic Services Week in a vari-ety of ways. Watch for information in your local media as well as AHS EMS Twitter (@ahs_ems), Facebook (@albertahealthservicesEMS) and ahs.ca/ems about events happening in your community.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million Albertans and it’s more than 661,848 square kilometers. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

Councillor, Ward 11 Jeromy FarkasOffice of the Councillors800 Macleod Trail S (#8001)Calgary, AB T2G 2M3Tel: 403 268 2430Email: [email protected] up for Ward news: calgary.ca/ward11

Dear Friends,

May showers are said to bring May flowers but, in Calgary, they also bring to the forefront flooding concerns for many Ward 11 residents and other Calgarians. The 2013 flood was the larg-est flood in Calgary since 1932. Heavy rainfall on the melting snowpack in the Rockies caused rapid and intense flooding in and around our city. Tragically, lives were lost, over 80,000 peo-ple were evacuated, and damage totalled over 6 billion dollars.

Flood mitigation and preparedness is a priority you and me. Ward 11 is home to the Elbow River and the Glenmore Reser-voir, so our neighbours and all levels of government need to be at the table for an important discussion. This month, please join me for a Special Edition Town Hall on Flood Mitigation and Preparedness. The event will take place on Thursday, May 17th (7-8:30 pm) at the Elbow Park Community Hall located at 800 34 Avenue SW. There will be representatives from The City of Calgary’s Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), Water Services and Environmental Protection business units. I hope that you and your family can join me for this event.

Also, during this month, you can expect to see construction on a variety of infrastructure projects that will continue around the Ward. These include the Southwest Ring Road, the South-west BRT as well as impacts on our parks and infrastructure. I will continue to share updates as my office receives them. I can appreciate that the coming months will continue to be a very challenging time for commuters and residents who live adjacent to the construction of these projects. I inherited many of these projects when I was elected and did not have a say in reviewing them or making them better before they were ap-proved. Your safety and quality of life is important to me and I want to hear from you.

My sincere appreciation goes to the Cedarbrae Community Association who hosted last month’s event. Finally, my sincere congratulations to Ward 11 residents, Bob Lang (Cliff Bungalow Community Association), Cal Melrose (Palliser Pumphill Bayview Community Association) and Erika Topola (Acadia Community Association) for being chosen by the Federation of Calgary Communities as ambassadors for the 2018 Faces of Community campaign – your tireless work is admired and appreciated.

Respectfully yours,Jeromy(Ward 11 Councillor and Palliser resident)

Spring is in the air! It’s time to register for fall 2018! For registration information and to find a unit near you go to www.girlguides.ca.

The Sparks units attended Sparklefest at Camp Jubilee, did projects for Earth Day, will be potting flowers for Mother’s Day and sleeping over at Telus Spark. Some girls will “advance” to the next level of Guiding which means they will move up and be joining their Guiding sisters in Brownies in the fall for new friendships and challenges.

The Brownie units celebrated Earth Day by having a Pitch-In Canada community clean-up, made bird feed-ers, sold cookies with the Star Wars characters at RONA and are prepping for camp. Some girls will be advancing to Guides and taking on new adventures in the fall.

The Guide units helped green our world for Earth Day by learning about recycling and how to reduce our con-sumption of non-recyclable waste, will try their hand at archery and are prepping for tent camping. Third year Guides continue work on their Lady Baden Powell Award and some will be advancing to Pathfinders.

The Pathfinder, Ranger & Trex units attended Alberta Girls Parliament in Edmonton, will be backpacking, yurt and tent camping. Some units are busy prepping for travel this summer to Jasper and Vancouver Island.

Guiding is a great place to build new friendships and ex-perience new challenges. Why not give us a try!

How familiar are you with your neighbourhood pollina-tors? Do you know how to attract them to your yard? Here in Canada, we have five main pollinators1:•Beetles•Flies•Wasps•Butterflies and Moths•Bees

This article focuses on providing food to attract bees and specifically native bees. However, other pollinators will likely be attracted as well.

Supporting native bee species is a bit different than managing honeybees. Beekeepers can place a man-aged honeybee hive in a convenient location (with some restrictions). The bees are directly introduced into their new home. Native bees, however, need to be en-ticed. The first step in this process is to provide a proper habitat to attract them. Good food and water sources can go a long way in attracting pollinators.

Bees need both nectar and pollen for survival. Pollen, which consists of small grains and carries the male re-productive cells of the plant, provides a source of pro-tein and fats. Nectar is a sugar-rich liquid produced by plants to encourage pollination. Foraging bees use this as a source of energy2. Honeybees also turn nectar into honey. Some bee species are specialists relying on a sin-gle type of flower to survive while others are generalists. Bumblebees, for example, are generalists. They tend to be attracted most to blue or violet flowers although they will visit other flowers as well3.

In planning your garden with pollinators in mind, it’s important to have food available all season. Crocuses, for example, are an early source of pollen. Echinachea provides pollen and nectar late in the season. Plan your garden to include plants that bloom throughout the season. Colour variety can also entice a variety of pollinators to frequent your yard. Heirloom and native plants have excellent nutritional value for pollinators. Native plants are also well suited to our climate.

Some plants you may consider for your garden include:•Crabapple (early season)•Foxglove (early season)•Willow (early season)•Catnip (mid-season)•Chives (mid-season)•Lavender (mid-season)•Borage (late season)•Coneflower (late season)•Cosmos (late season)4

Creating a pollinator-friendly garden can be a fun and rewarding challenge. If you’re just getting started, try one or two new plants and observe the changes in your pollinator population. Happy gardening!

Alberta’s economy is growing stronger every day, and our Government will continue to invest in our infra-structure, technology, and brain power to ensure a sol-id, diversified foundation in the future.

The Government of Alberta is partnering with the federal government and the City of Calgary to make unprecedented investments in public transit, green infrastructure, recreational, cultural, and community infrastructure. These investments will have benefits for people in communities across the province, including:•faster commutes and travel times for more people, and

easier movement of goods for businesses•cleaner air and water•reduced greenhouse gas emissions•smarter and more efficient cities•sustainable water management•enhanced public parks, recreational facilities and other

spaces that make communities great places to live•better transportation and digital infrastructure for

people living in remote communities

The funding builds on Alberta’s 2018 Capital Plan, which commits $26.6 billion over five years to support priority infrastructure projects across the province.

It also builds on the Green Trip funding we committed in the fall of 2015 - funding which is now creating the transportation links we need to have a great quality on life in Calgary-Acadia. Public Transit connects our busi-nesses, ensures seniors can stay in their communities and still access services, and gives our youth the ability to get themselves to their first job, and prepare for their future.

Speaking of the future, you may have heard that I have made the difficult decision to not run again in 2019. I have been so appreciative of the support, feedback and comments that I have received from constituents like you since I was elected in 2015. It has been an enormous honour to be your representative and advocate, and I look forward to continuing to serve you for the remain-der of the term.

As ever, I look forward to hearing from you at by phone at 403-640-1363 or email [email protected].
