Hello to Everyone, The rain is finally over and now we will see some cold weather, it’s great to see everything so lovely and green. As you may know, we had a visit from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, the visit went very well and the assessors found no issues of concern and noted that the Residents are happy with the care they receive. Thanks to all of you for your positive feedback, please always remember you can give us feedback at any-time. You can fill in a blue feedback form or you can request myself to visit you. It’s a confidential service, plus it helps to improve the service we deliver to you.

The new Aged Care Standard starts July this year and we are busy ensuring we are ready for the new standards. I am happy to talk to anyone that would like to know more about the new standards. Ask a staff member to let me know and I will visit you or you can call in at the administration office. The Royal Commission is busy looking at Residential Aged Care this month. Letter From The Care Manager’s Desk:

Consumer Directed Care

Proserpine Nursing Home strives to promote choice and decision making to all our customers.

At present we have been attending trials of Consumer Directed Care.

With input from yourself and from staff, we are making some changes to ensure we are delivering wrap around holistic care. The care will be from the same core staff to provide committed relationships between yourselves, family and the facility.

We value your right to choose, your right to take risks and to have your say. We want to provide the care of your choice and enable you to feel in control of your decisions and able to express openly any concerns.

Very shortly, a member of the care staff will be asking you some questions with your permission on your choices of daily living. We look forward to your input.

Thank you.

Fiona Beveridge

A reminder from Joy from Infection Control that flu season is upon us.

Influenza is an acute, highly infectious respiratory viral infection characterised by the following:

symptoms which develop rapidly, usually 1–3 days after exposure. initial symptoms that may be similar to those of other respiratory infections. uncomplicated influenza illness typically resolves after 3–7 days for most people, although

cough and malaise can persist for greater than 2 weeks.

Two major types (A and B) affect humans, with both influenza A and B viruses undergoing frequent changes in their surface antigens, giving rise to new circulating strains of influenza.

An annual vaccine targeting influenza A and B strains is currently available at all Dr’s surgeries. The vaccine formulation is reviewed annually, in an attempt to keep abreast of new circulating strains.

NB: it takes about two weeks to develop a protective immune response after being vaccinated.

Influenza occurs in seasonal epidemics across most of Australia, from winter to early spring. Here in northern Australia, there is a second viral peak in late summer/autumn.

The classic features of influenza are:

sudden onset of fever (≥38°c) cough and/or other respiratory symptoms (e.g. shortness of breath). one or more systemic symptoms (fatigue, muscle soreness, headache).

Other symptoms may include:

sore throat stuffy/runny nose.

Transmission:

influenza is spread by droplets from coughs or sneezes of an infected person and contact with contaminated surfaces.

individuals are usually infectious for 3–5 days after symptoms develop and may be infectious 1 day before symptoms appear.

Please be conscious of:

cough etiquette: either use a single use tissue (which is disposed of into bin after use), or if no tissue is available cough into your elbow crease.

hand washing: a vital element in reducing the spread of this virus. Please wash hands/use hand gel upon entry to the facility, upon departure and all the moments during your visit when contamination may be a possibility.

IMPORTANT: Please do not visit the facility if you have cold or flu like symptoms-the recommended exclusion time is 5-6 days after symptom commencement.

Weep Not For Me (author unknown)

Weep not for me though I have gone

Into the gentle night

Grieve if you will, but not for long

Upon my soul’s sweet flight

I am at peace, my soul’s at rest

There is no need for tears

For with your love I was so blessed

For all those many years

There is no pain, I suffer not

The fear is now all gone

Put now these things out of your thoughts

In your memory I live

Remember not my fight for breath

Remember not the strife

Please do not dwell upon my death

But celebrate my life
