From Pastor Mark . . . May We Grow Deeper In Christ On Sunday, September 19, 2010, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church voted to join the association, Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). I am grateful that our congregation received such clarity in setting its course for the future. But let me tell you what truly excites me. Over the last few weeks I have seen this congregation fill the sanctuary in eager expectation to worship Jesus Christ. I have watched as countless children have come forward to be part of the Children’s Message. I have enjoyed the variety of musical expressions from both early and late services fill the air to the Glory of God. I have participated in welcoming over twenty new members into our church, celebrated in an adult baptism, and watched as new faces join the adult choir. I have recognized new faces willing to serve in leadership positions, teaching roles and serving capacities. Other veteran faces continue to serve with enthusiasm, dedication and faithfulness. I have smiled as people have enjoyed one another’s company whether at a church picnic, around the coffee pot, or staying late after music practice, laughing and sharing stories. I have been amazed that over twenty people have signed up for the golf scramble without even having a sign up sheet. I have been overwhelmed at the continued interest in our upcoming Connexion. I have witnessed hugs and tears and prayers as people comfort one another through difficult times. I have been pleased as the Council has accepted the challenge to support the ministry of Youth For Christ and the youth of our neighborhood. The list could go on, but needless to say, amidst the challenges and decisions that our congregation has faced over the past year, life is being shared and is abundantly clear at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Stanwood. I am honored to be your pastor and am looking forward to growing deeper in Christ with all of you. May our hearts be open to reach out in love, and may all that we do bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ. May We Grow Deeper In Christ

On Sunday, September 19, 2010, Our Saviour’s

Lutheran Church voted to join the association, Lutheran

Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC). I am

grateful that our congregation received such clarity in

setting its course for the future.

But let me tell you what truly excites me. Over the last few weeks I have seen this

congregation fill the sanctuary in eager expectation to worship Jesus Christ. I have watched as

countless children have come forward to be part of the Children’s Message. I have enjoyed the

variety of musical expressions from both early and late services fill the air to the Glory of God. I

have participated in welcoming over twenty new members into our church, celebrated in an adult

baptism, and watched as new faces join the adult choir. I have recognized new faces willing to

serve in leadership positions, teaching roles and serving capacities. Other veteran faces continue to

serve with enthusiasm, dedication and faithfulness.

I have smiled as people have enjoyed one another’s company whether at a church picnic,

around the coffee pot, or staying late after music practice, laughing and sharing stories. I have been

amazed that over twenty people have signed up for the golf scramble without even having a sign up

sheet. I have been overwhelmed at the continued interest in our upcoming Connexion. I have

witnessed hugs and tears and prayers as people comfort one another through difficult times. I have

been pleased as the Council has accepted the challenge to support the ministry of Youth For Christ

and the youth of our neighborhood.

The list could go on, but needless to say, amidst the challenges and decisions that our

congregation has faced over the past year, life is being shared and is abundantly clear at Our

Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Stanwood. I am honored to be your pastor and am looking forward

to growing deeper in Christ with all of you. May our hearts be open to reach out in love, and may

all that we do bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ.

Yours In Christ,

Pastor Mark

What is Trunk or Treating you ask?

A Trunk or Treat is a Halloween event that is often church- or community-sponsored. People gather and park their cars in a large parking lot. They open their trunks, or the backs of their vehicles, and decorate them. Then they pass out candy from their trunks. The event provides a safe family environment for trick or treaters and is a great and safe community outreach opportunity! When it comes to decorating your vehicle there are the obvious choices, like decorating for Halloween, using pumpkins, spider webbing, spiders...But the best way to plan your trunk is to pick a theme. Think of it like dressing yourself in a costume. Sometimes you pick a theme and throw things together… Please consider joining us to make this a fun activity for the kids of our church and community! Please contact Jaimi McCall @ 939-2659 or [email protected] if you have any questions, ideas, donations or would like to participate in the fun!

Vote passes to sever ties with ELCA

On Sunday, September 19, 88% of the voting members of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of

Stanwood voted to sever this congregation's membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of

America and to join the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC).

This is the second of two required votes; the first having taken place in June of this year. In

addition, the motion to direct the church council to create a committee to amend the church

constitution passed by 95%. This decision was reached after nearly a year of research and study

into changes that have taken place in the ELCA in recent years, and represents the desire of the

majority of the members of the congregation to return to the authority of scripture and traditional

Lutheran teachings. The congregation of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Stanwood is the first

church in the Northwest Washington Synod of the ELCA to make this decision.

We are indebted to the Task Force for the many hours of meetings, gathering facts, and

presenting the beliefs of major Lutheran organizations to our congregation. All the information

the Task Force gathered came directly from official statements made on their organization

websites and in their printed material.

GOLF SCRAMBLE

All Ages

All skill levels of golf welcome

No Experience Needed

What is a “Golf Scramble”?

A Golf Scramble is played with 4-person teams, each made up of a mix of experience level

players.

In a scramble, each player on the team tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected

and all team players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is

determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.

Confirmation Sunday, October 31 ~ 8:45 a.m. worship service

confirmed this October 31st at the Church. Meeting times are 4:30pm at church on Wednesday

October 13, Wednesday October 20, and Wednesday October 27. Must attend all meetings. Thank

you!

The 9th graders being Confirmed are: Henry Hedeen, Bristan Kelley, Carlee VanLier, Joya

Major, Taylor Deline, Brian Slack, Amanda Lervick, and Makenzie Ferguson.

REFORMATION SUNDAY ~ Oct. 31

The color used on Reformation Sunday is Red, to signify the action of the Holy Spirit.

The last Sunday in October is traditionally known as “Reformation Sunday,” in Protestant

Churches, drawing from the date of October 31, 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his “95 Theses”

to the door of the Wittenberg Church in Germany, sparking the Protestant Reformation.

Martin Luther in Germany heralded the Biblical doctrine of justification through faith alone;

salvation is by God’s grace alone, received through faith in Christ alone. Good works play no part

in a person’s salvation (Rom. 3:21 - 4:5; 5:1; Gal. 2:16; Eph. 2:8, 9; Phil. 3:9) but are merely the

by-product, or fruit, of a relationship with God, established by God’s grace alone. The 95 Theses by Dr. Martin Luther

Out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light, the following propositions will be discussed at

Wittenberg, under the presidency of the Reverend Father Martin Luther, Master of Arts and of Sacred

Theology, and Lecturer in Ordinary on the same at that place. Wherefore he requests that those who are

unable to be present and debate orally with us, may do so by letter. In the Name our Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen. (see the "95 Theses" handout for a listing)
