Let’s meet at the LibraryMany people think of libraries as a place to read or borrow books. But did you know that our libraries offer a wide range of easy to access, free and low cost services and activities for everyone from young mums to older residents?

There are book clubs, knitting groups, seniors’ morning teas, interesting discussion groups and author visits. There is even a giant chess board at West Ryde and Ryde Libraries.

Technology is a great way to keep in touch and you can use the free WiFi to browse the internet on our free PCs, or use your own tablet, laptop or smartphone.

In coming weeks, events include Tablet Basics, Your Shopping Rights, Religion in Nepal and a Kids Club.

There is something interesting happening every day of the week at your local library and it’s so easy to get involved. Of course you can also borrow a wide range of printed and electronic books, magazines, newspapers and DVDs.

Sustainable Waste 2 Art Prize (SWAP)Artists and members of the community are reminded that entries for the City of Ryde Sustainable Waste 2 Art Prize (SWAP) close on Monday 27 July. Artworks that relate to sustainable living or waste themes can be entered in the four categories:

• SWAP - Open Category (ages 18 years and over)

• YEP - Youth Environment Prize - Youth Category (ages 16-25 years)

• Junior YEP - Younger Category (ages 11-15)

• Sustainability Theme Award

• People’s Choice Award.

nbn™ Rolloutnbn™ has released its quarterly update to the national construction plan, adding an additional 53,000 premises in cities, suburbs and towns in New South Wales to the rollout of the nbn™ network.

MESSAGE

The City of Ryde, Hunter’s Hill and Lane Cove Councils say “Yes to a JRA”. We have developed a collaborative model of a Joint Regional Authority (JRA) to address the NSW Government’s Fit for the Future proposal. The JRA will centralise key functions across the three council areas, including subregional planning, procurement, infrastructure delivery and other services where economies of scale exist. Under this option, each Council and its community retains their unique local identity and, most importantly, the City of Ryde is not split. The above applications are not ‘designated development’ under the terms of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act, and the City of Ryde is the authority responsible for the determination of the applications. Anyone may make submissions concerning these applications. Submissions are required to be in writing. They should be addressed to the General Manager and sent by post, email or fax or delivered in person to the Civic Centre or the Ryde Planning and Business Centre. Should the submission be by way of objection to the proposal, the submission should specify the grounds of objection. The City of Ryde has resolved that all submissions received in relation to rezoning and development applications will be publicly accessible on request. The supply of personal information is voluntary. However if you choose to make an anonymous submission it may be given less weight (or no weight) in the overall consideration of the application.
