Retail site visits through mobile devices experienced impressive growth, exceeding 10% for the first time. IMRG Capgemini's latest Quarter Benchmarking Index reveals massive growth with mobile sales accounting for 5.3% of e-retail sales in the fourth quarter of 2011 - a rise of 1,320% in two years.

As consumer reports estimate that almost 30% of Americans use their phones for banking, accessing medical records, and storing other sensitive data, they do not take precautions to secure their phones. Handset manufacturers, application developers, and mobile security vendors continue working to improve mobile security.

Businesses today are taking note of the difference that smartphones are making in people’s shopping habits. The Nielsen study showed that 22 percent of Smartphone owners have used their mobile device to make a purchase through an m-commerce website or a mobile app.

The penetration of smartphones is racing ahead and shows no signs of stopping, though it is notably changing the way that consumers are interacting with the online environment. Tablets are also used for more browser-based features, which is important for retailers and brands to take into account when rolling out tablet initiatives.
