MD/DC Damage Prevention Committee (DPC) Kevin Woolbright, Chairman, Mark Hamrick, Vice Chairman & Dora Parks, Secretary 7223 Parkway Drive, Suite 100 Hanover, MD 21076 _________________________________________________________________________ Minutes of the meeting for August 22, 2017 Meeting hosted by Miss Utility in Hanover, MD Prepared by Dora Parks, Committee Secretary CALL TO ORDER AND INTRODUCTIONS Chairman Kevin Woolbright called the regular monthly meeting to order at 9:32 a.m. followed by the customary self-introductions. Meeting attendees are provided on the last page of the minutes. The minutes of July 25, 2017 were approved with one correction. The meeting minutes will be posted at, http://www.missutility.net/damageprevention/ OLD BUSINESS None reported. OPEN DISCUSSIONS REGARDING DAMAGE PREVENTION AWARENESS & COOPERATION The committee discussed the following issues; Verizon damages, it was suggested that contractors contact their local Verizon representation immediately to resolve concerns over a Verizon damage prior to being billed. Late Ticket Check responses to Ticket Check rules were discussed. For Anne Arundel County, it was requested that excavators include any necessary road closings in the Extent of Work Sield. NEW BUSINESS Susan Stroud provided information on Common Ground Alliance (CGA) and their purpose relating to damage prevention on a National level. The three-digit dialing code, ‘811’ has been in place for ten years and was celebrated at the March 2017 CGA Damage Prevention conference in Orlando. Miss Utility accepted the 811- video challenge which won second place at the conference. CGA provided all attendees with t-shirts with the statement, ‘I AM 811’ with the emphasis that each of us participates in safety and has an impact. CGA’s second initiative is a time capsule video assembling eleven past collectables and providing eight future ideas geared to improvements for all partnerships in damage prevention; locating, call center, construction equipment, mapping, utility identiSiers, etc. There will be a three-minute video outlining the items that must be received by CGA on November 8 th . Ideas will be received by Susan due by October 15 th . The capsule will be buried on Miss Utility property. The committee discussed various items to be included in the time capsule. SAFETY PRESENTATION, TRAINING & EDUCATION Erica Erdman of Maryland MOSH presented on Heat Stress naming the identiSiable conditions, effects and response. Erica also talked about water intoxication. Maryland reported twelve fatalities in 2017 due to heat stress. We were reminded to look for it, recognize the symptoms and be trained on how to respond.
