MISSIONDevelop and implement leadership, expertise, and technical structures to make media archiving and preservation faster, higher quality, scaled-up, and easier to access before our recorded history is lost to degradation and obsolescence.
Project scope Digitally preserve 30,000 reels of IU’s signifi cant and at-risk fi lms to ensure long-term access for research and teaching.
Archival information packagePreservation master: Unmuxed overscan DPX and Broadcast Wave (96k, 24-bit) wrapped in a tarball
Production master: Overscan ProRes 4444 (48k, 24-bit)
Access copy: Cropped ProRes 4444 (48k, 24-bit)
XML: Includes fi le metadata, technical information, physical condition, preparation and scanning notes.
Streaming derivatives: H.264
Storage sizes 2k scans = 1.5 TB / hr
4k scans = 6.0 TB / hr
Delivered per day: 27.6 Terabytes
Estimated storage for 12,500 hours: 21.5 Petabytes (95% 2K + 5% 4K)
Automated QC Post-Processing IU-build confi rms package structure, checksums, durations, aspect ratio, pixel aspect ratio, fi le types, frame count, audio presence, color space, bit depth, core xml fi elds populated.
Manual QCHuman-intensive process to confi rm gamma, color correction, framing, sound quality and sync, sharpness, identify digital artifacting, clipping/crushing, dust or hair in gate, verify xml, notate for post-production work.
