Report
The data is telling us many things, but these five things stand out for me: 1. 19 respondents have indicated no use of digital devices and have made no
requests re learning digital skills. 2. 71 computer user respondents have made no requests for assistance. 3. 100 respondents consider themselves to be competent computer users.
4. 129 respondents have requested assistance 5. Substantial groups of members have sought U3A assistance to develop
competencies in the 27 skill areas listed on the previous pages. I believe the main issues for U3A Bendigo to address in response to the Questionnaire are: 1. How to support members who want U3A to provide activities that will assist
them to develop digital skills. 2. How to support members who have no desire to attain digital competencies.
U3A Bendigo will ensure they are always included in courses and activities, including those where digital technologies are used by participants to do course work.
3. How to support members who may be at risk of isolation or exclusion from
access to benefits and entitlements, whether it be due to lack of access to resources, reluctance or a determination to avoid digital involvement.
4. How to involve members who have achieved a level of digital competence in
activities where they assist others who are seeking to develop skills. 5. How to ensure the continued engagement in courses and activities of digitally
competent members. 6. How to ensure that office bearers and conveners are equipped provide
facilities and programs that to meet the expectations of digitally competent new members.

1st November 2015 The Questionnaire had 109 written statements that respondents were asked to tick and 29 statements that provided space for respondents to write, making a total of 138 statements. In addition to writing in the provided spaces, some respondents also wrote next to other statements. Some respondents also wrote additional text elsewhere on the Questionnaire. The data on the returned Questionnaires was therefore recorded as follows: 1. A Return ID was written on each Questionnaire as it was processed. 2. A set of 139 statement records with that Return ID was then created, numbered sequentially
from 1 to 139, the first 138 records to hold data associated with the numbered statements on the Questionnaire and the 139th to hold addition text users wrote on the Questionnaire.
The return records have the following structure: the first three data fields are numeric and the fourth is a text field. Some example data follows. A “1” in the <Tick> field signifies the respondent ticked (agreed with) the statement. If the respondent wrote something next to a statement, that has been entered in the <Text> field.

Media and Online Usage Questionnaire
Purpose Dear U3A Member Digital technology is all-pervasive. Its use is reshaping all sectors of society and the ways individuals and groups interact in their communities. Change is rapid and on-going. Some U3A Bendigo members’ work and life experiences have equipped them to enjoy the benefits of digital technologies. Others seek the same enjoyment, but they are con-fused by the options; apprehensive about risks; have old equipment that no longer works; have acquired equipment but can’t work it; or simply do not know where to start. The Committee is committed to assisting members enjoy the benefits of new infor-mation and communication technologies. We have asked our recently formed Technolo-gy Advisory Group to prepare a questionnaire to find out what members want. A copy of the questionnaire and a stamped-address envelope has been mailed to every member. We hope members will tell us what media and online activities they engage in and what technology related courses, activities and facilities they would like U3A to pro-vide. We intend to use the returns to plan some of our 2016 courses and activities. We will use the information gathered to:
• plan activities, courses and facilities that will help members enjoy the benefits of the digital age;
• obtain feedback from members on the technology activities and facilities U3A of-fers;
• Identify additional activities or facilities U3A might offer in the future; • identify members who are able and willing to share their technology skills and
knowledge with other members. We will develop a summary report and publish it in TheBUZZ. The summary information will be used to support U3A Bendigo grant submissions.
