The Department of English, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) under its UGC-SAP DRS
Programme, Phase-III is going to organize a lecture on ‘What is it to translate’ by Prof
Gayatri Chakarvorty Spivak.
The lecture is scheduled to be held on February 21, 2018 at 2.30 pm in the Dr M A Ansari
Auditorium, JMI
Prof Gayatri is a renowned scholar from Columbia University, USA. She is an illustrious
cultural and critical theorist. She is renowned for her translation of Derrida’s works into
English and also for her path breaking essay ‘Can the Subaltern Speak?’ Her specialisation
and prolific publications are in the fields of literature, politics of culture, feminism, Marx,
Derrida, and globalization in the 19 th and 20
th centuries
At present, Professor Spivak is University Professor at Columbia University, USA. She has
been the recipient of the Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) from Universitat
Rovira i Virgili, Italy, Rabindra Bharati, India, University of Paris VIII, and University of
Chile. She was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Thought and Ethics, and the Padma Bhushan in
2013. This year, she was conferred the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement from the Modern
Language Association of America.
