Hello, My Name is Steven

(Many People Call Me Data Man)

Why Am I Called Data Man, You Ask?• To understand that, you have to know a little more about my

background at work, and in life.• Once upon a time back in 1987 or so, I decided to try my hand at

learning how to operate mainframe computers. I just wanted a better job at the time…

Page 3: Meet Data Man

After working as a computer operator for 2 years, something had kindled…

So around 1989, I decided to go back to the same technical school to learn how to write Cobol code…

By 1991, I was turned on to “Logic…”Though I was somewhat of a latecomer to the college thing, I decided to sit in on some computer science classes at Temple University. On a whim, I also decided to sit in on an accounting class.

Something happened. Though many couldn’t see it, I saw the debit and credit sides of the balance sheet as another expression of the “on” and “off” configuration of electronic bits. Numbers were either “debits” or “credits.” I had to know more, so I stuck around and ended up with…

But the BBA, like the computer operations certificate, wasn’t enough... So I grabbed these to give myself a better chance at succeeding in the competitive world of business…

As the Year 2000 rolled around, something terrible happened…

I LOST ALL MY DATA FILES WHEN MY LAPTOP CRASHED!

Page 8: Meet Data Man

My New Religion Was Born…I became fanatical about data storage, backups and redundancy. I looked for the “cloud” even before it was formed in the sky!

I started scanning everything and paid keen attention to folder and file structures and developed naming conventions that facilitated access to important files. People began noticing…

Employers where I worked since 2001 always wondered how I accomplished so much while there was rarely more that three sheets of paper on my desk…

I Became, A Whisperer…As I became more proficient with managing data, I started accomplishing more work in less time. I started paying more and more attention to tools and techniques that…

Make Data Talk…

What does this mean? Well, a flat file can “tell” you one thing, but a pivoted Excel file or an Access database can communicate something of a whole different magnitude.

I Can Hear Your Business…I aim to break the mold that brought accountancy into the world…

I am an accountant who can feel the pulse of business decisions that may be locked in your data files and structures. Though I can complete a tax return, I am more concerned with finding out if you are able to “hear” the more robust and effective business that may be INSIDE your business, just waiting to be born…

I am Data Man.
