President’s Update Jim Sambold, JANE President

We Are On To February

Our January monthly meeting was a great success, with over 50 members in attendance as Reverend Dr. Joseph Wilkes expounded on the state of collecting die cast Jaguar models. His collection was started in the late 80’s, and time has enabled him to amass well over 1,000 examples in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Joe told us that the biggest problem with his collection, even in a very large house, is finding the space to display them. Fortunately, his family is very understanding, and with some proper planning, he is able to rotate parts of the collection so they all can be

viewed over time instead of being always tucked away in their boxes.

As we roll into February, Mother Nature has been rather kind so far, and it appears that she will continue to be so at least for the near future. This also means that with the official date of Spring less than seven weeks away, we may, just may, get an early start on getting our cars ready for the season. Our event calendar has been pretty well-sketched out for the year, with the possibility of a few additional events that will put us over the 40 mark for the year once again.

Coming up in very short order will be our Valentine’s Day Dinner on Sunday, the 21st. The event is always well attended and has been a sellout for the last several years. If you are planning on going, make sure that you go on the website and preregister while there is still room. Directly following will be our February monthly meeting, and I am sure Dean will have another great speaker lined up for us.

Plans are being finalized for our Quebec City tour in June, as we have well over 60 people and 30+ cars already signed up. Ed Avis and Mark Lenci have outlined a fabulous event over the course of five days, at a first class hotel along with some great sightseeing and photo ops. If you have any interest in going, you need to call the hotel right away to book a room, and either check out the tour details on the JANE website or call Ed or Mark for more information. This will be an amazing trip and also one of the largest attended aside from our annual Concours.

Speaking of the Concours, it is not really that far away, and we are in need of someone to step up and take charge of the Hospitality Suite. This is the social focal point for our biggest event and is enjoyed by many. This chair position has the best benefits of any during the Concours weekend, so if you are interested, please contact Jane Murray and let her know.

In closing, I would like everyone to keep a couple of our members in their thoughts and prayers as days and weeks go by. When this goes to press, David Moulton will have had a major surgery and will be in recovery. We wish him a speedy journey back so that he can get behind the wheel of his beautiful F-Type. As I have mentioned before, Al Zanengo continues to battle some serious medical issues that have prevented him from attending any of our recent club events. We wish him the very best with the challenges he faces and hope to see him sometime in the Spring. Please take a few minutes and reach out to Dave and Al and let them know that we are thinking of them and wish them well.

This is a great club, because you, the membership, have made it so. As we continue to increase our member-

Welcome New Members

Chester Rice Bowdoinham, ME 1973 XKE OTS, 1971 XKE 2+2 FHCDouglas Touart Bedford, MA 1961 XKEJay Levine Brunswick, ME 2015 F-Type Coupe

JANE is starting out 2016 with 241 members on the roster as of Janu-ary 28th. This compares very closely with 242 members last year at the end of January. I expect that a few more members will sign up when we report our membership to JCNA at the end of January. As an AGM delegate this year, I will be proud to report our JANE mem-bership at the upcoming AGM in Scottsdale. I expect we will once again be one of the largest clubs in JCNA.

I would like to see our numbers grow, so that we can firmly be the largest club in JCNA! Please take the opportunity to reach out to your acquaintances to look for prospective new members. Also, please take a few brochures at any of our meetings. Additionally, the JANE website is a great place for prospective members to sign in with a guest membership and see the full calendar of activities held year round. And of course they can sign up there as well!

If you have not renewed yet, please do so at your earliest opportunity. If you have not done so as of February 1, your JANE/JCNA membership has expired. You may miss out on our regular communications, the Coventry Cat, the Jaguar Journal, and other club benefits unless you renew promptly.

I will be mailing letters out to all members who have not renewed. We will be asking why they have not re-newed and will be asking for feedback to improve the overall JANE experience.

Kevin and Diane Murphy won the “early renewal drawing” at our January meeting for one free year of basic membership.

Cheers,

Howard Kalet

The Wayside Inn is the oldest operating inn in the country and a Massa-chusetts historic landmark, well worth a visit even separate from JANE’s monthly meetings there. The Inn’s Old Bar is its oldest room, and it’s still in use today. On the evenings when we have our meetings at the Inn, you’ll always find members already gathered in the Old Bar well before dinner meetings begin at 7pm. It’s always the perfect gathering place to visit with fellow members.

Tech Session – The Restoration of a Mark 2Waltham, MassachusettsSaturday, March 12, 10am

The Mark 2 Jaguars are a favorite of many people, but they suffer from a rather low market value that means they are not always kept in the best of health. The cost of professional services for full reconditioning far out-weighs a collector’s appraisal, and so it is left to competent owners to keep the cars in fine fettle.

Eric Kriss has taken on the complete rebuilding of a Mark 2 with a meticulous (or perhaps obsessive) approach to the task. It is being done with an extraordinary level of thoroughness and has been completely documented. Eric has made certain changes from the original, including a major revision of the electrical wiring and the fitting of a modern electronics multi-function display with a backup camera.

At the time of this event, the car will essentially be complete except for the final outer body painting and interior upholstery. The project has progressed very quickly, having started only in June 2014.

Eric’s blog may be seen at http://fairislepress.com/WP/. This website not only details all the work and tribu-lations encountered, but also provides interesting background information on the original vendors of some components.

The car is being built in a very well equipped garage that has room for a good number of visitors. Street park-ing is very limited, but there is a municipal parking lot between Common and Lexington Streets that is only a short walk away (see map).

Kriss’s garage location is at 10 Middle Street Court, Waltham, Massachusetts.

Jaguar XJ220 at Sotheby’s Arizona Auction

From justbritish.com January 27, 2016

Autoweek is running an article about RM Sotheby‘s upcoming Scottsdale, Arizona auction and nine cars to watch. What really caught our attention in this one is the inclusion of one of our favorite, but often overlooked, supercars – the Jaguar XJ220.

To quote Autoweek…

Jaguar’s technological masterpiece is getting to that stage when some of those who wanted them as kids now have the ability to buy them, whether they have to sell their houses to do it or not. The XJ220 had a compli-cated history, and like an impressive number of 1990s supercars it was conceived during an economic boom to arrive in their owners’ driveways a couple of years after a market crash. The recession of the early 1990s dealt a heavy blow to the XJ220 without killing it outright, though the car itself was in some ways a compro-mise. The controversy surrounding this model is long gone, and what remains is a 1990s legend, with most examples showing very modest mileage.

RM Sotheby’s will be offering one of two cars that are California emissions compliant (it’s a wonder there aren’t more given where collections are based), an example that shows a claimed 6,900 kilometers from new. This example has had a number of items serviced and replaced within the last 600 miles, the auction house advises, including the clutch, fuel pumps and timing belt, and is now ready for the auction block. This one’s estimated to bring between $425,000 and $500,000 on auction day.

Read more about the auction and the other cars up for grabs at http://autoweek.com/article/auctions/9-cars-watch-rm-sothebys-scottsdale-auction.

In the News200MPH Jaguar F-TYPE SVR to Make Global Debut at 2016 Geneva Motor Show

From Jaguar Media Center website www.us.media.jaguar.com

(MAHWAH, N.J.) - January 26, 2016 - The new 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR will make its global debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show on March 1, 2016 and will go on sale in summer 2016.

Capable of accelerating to 200mph1, the new F-TYPE SVR is the first Jaguar to wear the SVR badge and is developed to exploit the two-seat aluminum sports car’s full potential while retaining its day-to-day usability.

Lighter, faster and more powerful, the new F-TYPE SVR takes performance, dynamics and driver involvement to a new level yet retains the comfort and duality of character inherent to all Jaguar cars.

“The new F-TYPE SVR is the first series production Jaguar car to be developed by Special Vehicle Opera-tions and benefits from everything we know about precision engineering, performance and design,” said John Edwards, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations. “The result is a 200mph, all-weather supercar that you can drive every day - we even made a convertible version so that enthusiasts can revel in the sound from the new titanium exhaust system.”

The new F-TYPE SVR will join the 2017 Model Year F-TYPE coupe and convertible range comprising of the F-TYPE, F-TYPE Premium, F-TYPE S, F-TYPE British Design Edition and F-TYPE R.

Full technical specifications, pricing, images and films will be available on February 17, 2016 at www.us.media.jaguar.com.
