ProjectSociety of Automotive Engineers (SAE)Competition:

The Supermileage® competition provides engineering and technology students with a challenging design project that involves the development and construction of a single-person, fuel-efficient vehicle. Vehicles are powered by a small four-cycle engine. The vehicles will run a specified course with the vehicle obtaining the highest combined kilometers per liter (miles per gallon) rating plus design segment points winning the event.

GoalsVehicle will:

Achieve 500 mpgComply with all rules set forth by SAE competition

Project will:Raise awareness about fuel efficiencyRoll over project

Design NormsStewardship

Engine AnalysisHot vapor

Preheat fuel from exhaust stream~7% increase in efficiency

Increase compression ratioLarger compression ratios are more efficient:

Milling the cylinder head ~5% increase in efficiency

Engine AnalysisOverhead camshaft configurationMore efficient combustionEngine “breathes” better
