No special qualifications are necessary for membership in Skyscrapers. You need no knowledge of astronomy nor do you need to own a telescope. Many members have never owned a telescope of their own, preferring to use the fine instruments owned by Skyscrapers. Others have made their own telescopes with assistance and instruction from fellow members. Access to the society’s telescopes is available to all members in good standing. All you need is an interest in the sky!

If you are interested in joining, complete the attached member-ship application and return it with the appropriate dues to the address indicated at the bottom of the form. You will be introduced to the membership at the next regular meeting, and your email address will be placed on the mailing list for The Skyscraper, the society’s monthly newsletter.

Skyscrapers is a friendly organization with a distinguished past. We invite you to join our society and become a part of our future.

ActivitiesAbout Skyscrapers MembershipSkyscrapers holds regular meetings, usually on the first Friday of each month, at Seagrave Memorial Observatory. During the winter months, meetings are held off-site when the grounds are usually inaccessible. Meetings begin at 7:30pm and consist of a special program and a business meeting. Programs include topics that are of interest to the beginner and the experienced amateur astronomer. Past programs have covered

a wide range of subjects, including observing tech-niques, space explo-ration, astrophotog-raphy, telescopes, astrophysics, and planetary geology. Guests are always welcome.

In addition to regular monthly meetings, members and guests also gather for day trips to local observatories, museums, planetariums and astronomical events. Extended expeditions have included eclipse trips, observing from White Mountain, California, and observing time on the famous 24-inch refractor at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Each fall, usually on the first Saturday of October, Skyscrapers hosts AstroAssembly, its annual convention. This 60-year tradition brings together amateur astronomers from all over the New England area. The society presents an array of speakers from the astronomical community as well as a variety of activi-ties of interest to all participants.

Seagrave Observatory is open to the public every clear Saturday night and is available for visits by school classes, scout groups or any other interested groups. Skyscrapers also holds star parties off-site for larger school, scout, and community groups.

Skyscrapers, Inc. is a group of people who are interested in the wonders of the sky. Members include knowledgeable amateur astronomers and beginning observers who get together regularly to discuss and learn about the science of astronomy.

Skyscrapers was founded as the Amateur Astronomical Society of Rhode Island in 1932 by the late Dr. Charles Smiley of Brown University. The society incorpo-rated in 1936 and purchased the observatory in North Scituate from the estate of Frank Evans Seagrave, a noted amateur astronomer from Providence.

Today, Seagrave Memorial Observatory not only houses the recently restored 8¼” 1878 Alvan Clark refractor, but also a 12” reflector, and Meade 12” and 16” Schmidt- Cassegrain telescopes. A few portable tele-scopes are also available to our members as loaner instruments. The observatory grounds also house a meeting hall that is used for meetings of the society.
