Local teen doing her part to help community By Madeline Cline Updated: 09/28/2012 01:02:43 PM PDT

Maggie Selzer, a freshmen at Ukiah High School who is involved with both 4-H and sports, has completed her Emerald Star project over the 2011-2012 year in 4-H. An Emerald Star project is a project that specifically is geared for an individual in 4-H to help better their club or community. Leader’s Corner On July 22, 2012, four members of the Ukiah Shamrock 4-H Club traveled to the California State Fair in Sacramento. Kenzie Kornegay, Kylie Kornegay, Jessika Ramos & Cameron Ramos participated in 4-H cavy (guinea pig) showmanship and the Cavy Bowl. The cavy bowl is a competition on cavy knowledge. Kinda like playing the game show Family Feud. Two teams at a time go head to head and try to beat the other team by buzzing in first with the correct answer. Some of the questions were:

Q: What is a male cavy

called?

A: A male cavy is called

a boar.

Q: What is a female cavy

called?

A: A female cavy is called

a sow.

In the cavy bowl participants with the most points at the end of three rounds wins. Kenzie, Kylie, Jessika, & Cameron’s team name was the “Crazy Cavy Crew”. At the end of the rounds the Crazy Cavy Crew won 1st place in novice. We learned a lot at state fair. It was exciting and an amazing experience. I recommend for 4-H’ers of all ages to go to the 2013 California State Fair. It was a lot of fun and we all learned a lot of new things.

Ukiah Shamrock 4-H Club

A BIG thank you! To every club that got their project proficiencies turned in on time!

Our next big deadline is Oct. 12th record books competing at county level are due in the office by 5PM, along with the names of judges (1 judge for every 3 books or fraction of 3). Clubs must send judges or their clubs books cannot be judged at County level.

Record book judging will be held at the Ukiah 4-H office on Thursday Oct. 18th starting at 6pm. The more judges we have the quicker we’ll be done.

Mandatory club reports are due in the Ukiah 4-H office by Thursday Oct. 25th. The mandatory reports are;

Outreach documentation (how you let people in your community know that 4-H was accepting enrollments for the new year) Inventory of club/project owned supplies/items. Anything that was purchased with 4-H funds (or donated to 4-H) is property of 4-H and needs to be listed. If you need a form check the treasurers manual or contact the 4-H office. If items are missing from last years’ inventory or if were broken and thrown away, please list the date they were discovered missing or broken.

Peer Review Audit of club treasury each club must turn in the final report (also in the treasurers book) along with a copy of audit done by a team of 3 members and leaders that are not the treasurer or adult helper. There is NO need to send a bank statement, we now have those in the office and haven’t updated the forms to reflect that yet.

Last Leader orientation scheduled inland is Oct. 25th the Ukiah 4-H office. If you have leaders that still need to complete this as part of their enrollment process please RSVP to the office by Oct 24th with their club and project so Linda will know who to expect and how to plan the training.

Alpaca 4-H Project

A new project is being formed on the coast. Cherie Koss Waldo and Karen Novak (a vet in Mendocino) will be collaborating to create an Alpaca 4-H project. Cherie has Alpaca curriculum from Colorado 4-H that they will be using as a basis for this project. They anticipate meeting once per month at Karen’s vet clinic in the after work hours, until fair time gets closer, then meetings could be twice a month while getting ready for fair. They will wait to make a definite schedule of days and times until they see how many kids are interested and what would work for their parents. For more information about this project contact Cherie Koss Waldo at 707-937-1127 or by email at [email protected] This project is open to any youth member interested in learning about Alpacas and willing to travel to Mendocino for the meetings.

2012 Mendocino Junior Fair Awards Wrap-up

The committee work is done for the year, leftover awards are put away and over 360 awards were purchased for the two fairs in our county. It was one very successful year for all the junior fair exhibitors. This year at the Mendocino County Fair, our committee sponsored the first annual “Barnyard Games” - held on Sunday morning after Round Robin Competition. The

were fun for both the spectators and participants alike. Whoppers were passed by spoons only and eggs were painstakingly carried on rakes, and we found out that hand trucks are faster than wheelbarrows. Thank you to our teens that helped up with

the games. Next year there will be a junior committee heading this up – so if you are interested, please let me know and you can be part of the planning fun. Also the Awards Committee joined up with Rainbow Ag and the Mendocino 4-H County

Council to host the Junior Costume Dress Contest held right after the awards ceremony on Sunday. We had over a dozen contestants in two classes. Everyone did their best to support the theme of “Super Heroes” It was a super duper hoot. We

thank our classy judges for volunteering and offering their expert opinions, Beth Keiffer and Devon Jones were awesome. Both said it was extremely hard to pick just two winners since everyone was dressed up so well and put a lot of thought into their costumes. There were prizes for all. Please make a note that for next year – the theme is “Old MacDonald had a ……” Start

thinking about the costumes for you and your animal!!!

And remember to thank your sponsors and if you misplaced your sponsor’s name, please don’t hesitate to contact me: Nadine Boer 463-0411 or [email protected] and I will be happy to look it up for you.

Please look at this amazing list of sponsors and take a moment and thank them for their continued support of our Fair Awards Program. These individuals and business sponsors are truly the “Best of Show” and our “Grand Champions”.

SHAMROCKS 4-H

Written By: Ericka Boesel

Hey everybody if you didn’t go to the General Meeting on September 6, 2012 I’ll catch you up: We had our installation of officers. Each officer had a box of cereal that represented what their office was like or would be doing in the coming year. For

example, my cereal was Special K because I am the special reporter for our club. Tanner Whetzel is our new corresponding secretary and his job is to keep track of our 4H lives so his cereal was Life cereal. Our officers decided we wanted this year’s community service project to be helping out local adoption agencies by collecting food, blankets and other stuff for pets in

need.

After officer installation we signed up for our new projects. Some of the projects we have this year are hunter’s safety and education, archery, knitting, woodworking, dog care and training, dairy goats, horses, sheep, swine, cavies, rabbits,

scrapbooking, flower arranging, beekeeping, fly tying, cooking, sewing, photography, cloverbuds and more that I can’t remember! We are going to be having a lot of fun and everyone is looking forward to making some really cool things to enter

in the extravaganza and the fairs!.

Boonville Fair is coming soon and many of our members have animal and still projects entered. I can’t wait to see what everyone has done. In October we are going to be selling water and baked goods at Nadine Boer’s Pumpkin Patch. The dates

for selling water are Oct 13-14 and 20-21. They’re both weekends so parents don’t worry about us missing school! We are going to be taking shifts, so sign up, Ukiah club.

The Ukiah Pumpkinfest is Oct 13 and 14. There will be a petting zoo, a 4H entry in the parade and a 4H pumpkin smashing booth. If you are interested in being in the parade, bringing your animals to the petting zoo or helping out anywhere else,

contact your project leader or our community leader Gina Cline at [email protected]. There is also a dog costume contest and weiner dog races on Sunday.

November 10 and 11 we will be doing another fundraiser at the Sheep Dog Trials at the Hopland Field Station. We will be selling food and drink. Our wonderful past camp cook, Beth Keiffer, is doing all the prep work so we just have to show up and do what she says. I helped last year. The breakfast burritos are REALLY good. Plus I liked watching the dogs work the sheep.

Record Books were due at the beginning of September and judging will be later this month. If you want a pin and stripe for your hat next year make sure to do your record book. We will be having more information at the end of each club meeting to

help you out. I started a new calendar this year so help me remember to write down everything I did and any awards I got. That way I won’t have to try and make up work next year.

Our next meeting is Thursday, October 4, 2012 6:30pm at the Ukiah 4-H office.

In my next newsletter I’ll tell you guys what happened at the Boonville fair!

SPARTANS 4-H

On Monday September 10th, the Mendocino Spartan 4-Her’s met for their monthly meeting. Record books for the 2011-2012 year were due that day. Before the meeting, new members signed up and selected their classes. Returning members also signed up for more classes. After new members were done, the official meeting started. During the meeting, some project leaders came up to share what projects they were going to be leading, and what they will be about. After the meeting was

over, the new members continued to sign up. Afterwards, the 4-Her’s and their families were invited to enjoy soup. For more information on the Mendocino Spartan 4-H group, contact WendyLee Beak at [email protected].

Looks like I'll get one more scribe in before we officially change our officers. I need to apologize to Gracie Silva for I didn't include how great she did at the REF. Gracie

represented us at the horse show this year. She got Champion Gelding, took High Point in the Horse Show & the Gymkhana. Congrats on a job well done.

Five members from Long Valley 4-H showed their critters at The Mendocino County Fair & Apple Show this year. On Dog Obedience Collin Spackman-Rowles took 1st in Sub Novice A, Natya Cauckwell took 1st in Sub Novice B & Tate Campbell took 1st in

Novice A. In Dog Showmanship Collin got 1st in Novice, Tate 1st & Natya 2nd in Advanced. Tate went on to place 4th in Small Animal Round Robin. Congratulations

to Kenzie Kornegey at the Small Animal Round Robin Winner!

Mady Braught took 6th place in Advanced Showmanship in Sheep. Her poor sheep sure didn't want to cooperate. Better luck next time.

Gracie Silva took 1st in the Open Horse Show & 2nd the 4-H Horse Show. She did a great sweetheart run as the Laytonville Rodeo Jr. Sweetheart.

Good Luck to everyone in the new 4-H Year!

Hi! I hope everyone's new 4-H year is off to a good start. After the stress and heat of the Redwood Empire Fair, it's nice to take a little break and celebrate the end of the summer.

At our first general meeting we had the installation of new officers with a “Chex Mix” theme. Each officer added a new ingredient and flavor to the mix. We went over our proposed budget for the year, and voted to pay the $15.00 fee for our leaders in the club. The officers made a list of things to try to accomplish over the year and that was read over at the meeting. One of them was to bring the snacks to the tables at the end of the meetings, so we could have cleaner

floors and a more orderly end of our meetings. The leadership group is also trying to make more fun filled meetings so we can all enjoy them. We had some new members come to the meeting, and I am excited to help them with their first

year of 4-H. I hope they enjoy 4-H and will re-enroll next year.

The Mendocino County Fair And Apple Show was very fun as usual. Potter Valley had quite a few members in the Walk Of Champions this year. And congratulations to the Swine Group for getting the Clean Stall Award.

Congratulations to Chayton Johnson for winning “Breeder of the Year.” Winning this award is a very big deal! The prize is a very nice belt buckle and $500! Chayton has been perfecting his sheep herd over the years and has won Champion

quite a few times.

Our next 4-H meeting is October 1st at 7pm at the Potter Valley Methodist Church on Main Street in Potter Valley. Also the Eel River Clean-up is coming up and we are hoping everyone will come and help, have a good time, and enjoy the

wonderful lunch.

We are all looking forward to a great year that will make a lot of fun memories!

Considering a tablet purchase?

http://www1.cyfernet.org/tech/08-12-tablet.html

Tablets are growing in popularity, and new and different tablets continue to go on the market. If you're considering purchasing a tablet for your 4-H Club or project, here are

some factors to consider.

Thanks to America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM. Now through Nov. 30, 2012, eligible farmers can enter for a

chance to win $2,500 that can be directed to their local 4-H program. Rural community members can suggest an idea

or initiative that needs funding for their local 4-H, such as a community garden or camp scholarships. Farmers may

review the ideas and consider them in their application. To plant your idea and encourage farmers to support your 4-

H, go to GrowCommunities.com. In addition, in communities impacted by drought, the Monsanto Fund will provide twice the financial support. Winning farmers from

counties that have been declared natural disaster areas will now receive double the donation, a total of $5,000.

2013 Prudential Spirit Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the

National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes individuals in grades 5-12 solely on the basis of

their volunteer activities. 4-H’ers can apply online at www.nassp.org/spirit. Applications must be submitted to a county 4-H agent by November 6, 2012. Once county 4-H programs have selected Local Honorees, they must certify those applications by November 13, 2012 to a state-level

judging committee, which will pick the top youth volunteers in each state and the District of Columbia.
