MESSAGE FROM

THE PRESIDENT

Hi Y’all!

It has been 3 months since you voted me in as President and

what a ride!  Within 72 hrs we kicked off our Easter Weekend

fes vi es.  Without the guidance and help of this amazing

group of members it would not have been such a great success.

J.T. and Kathy Thomas headed up the Sunrise Service with their

band of volunteers and it was enjoyed by all.  Glen and Wanda

Dowell oversaw the Easter Fish Fry, which was a tremendous

success.   Thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in to accom‐

modate the last minute venue change due to weather.  It was

the can do a tude and community spirit that drives these

events.  I am so impressed with the talent and ambi on in this

club . . . and that was just the Easter Sunday Fes vi es!

The same can do a tude has the Islander in print again.  It has

taken a team of people, led by Teresa O en, Editor in Chief, to

bring it back to life.  Many of you have said you wanted the

printed version and we listened!

Special thanks to Ralph and Kathi Coats for organizing the 4th of

July fes vi es and Pege and John Wright for heading up the

Membership Drive.  The more people involved, the more ac vi‐

es we can do and meet the requests for game night, disc golf

tournaments, kayaking classes, kid’s par es, Annual Crawfish

Boil, New Year’s Eve party, and any other ideas you may have

to make this the greatest community you have ever lived in.

YARD OF THE MONTH

Hello Clear Lake Shores! Yard of the Month is in full swing again and we are starting off with a WINNER! Ben and Ann Reyna, who live at 913 Elm have created an amazing tropical paradise! The Reynas have lived in Clear Lake Shores for 7 years and over those years have filled their yard with beautiful hi-biscus, plumerias, roses, palm trees, fruit trees, and numerous flowering plants and bushes. In Ben’s words, he shared, “Annie and I pretty much share the gardening activities. We didn’t know much about gardening so we just started buying things we liked the looks of and planting them wherever. If they lived – good. If they died we bought something else and

planted that until we got a yard full.” Well, these two who “don’t know much about gardening” had a goal to make their home feel like they are away on a vacation and they have surely suc-ceeded. Over the years Ben and Ann have perfected the art of hibiscus cultivating and growing. One of their most unusual and magnificent hybrid hibiscus plant is the Climax. This particular plant is somewhat rare and supposedly hard to take care of. Whatever magic touch they have, it has worked with this one. It is 9 years old, has died twice, is not supposed to be cultivated with

cuttings (they have several beautiful and healthy plants from cuttings), and has a very fragile root system. It seems to me that they have defied all the odds with this one! One of the many striking things about their landscaping are the palm trees. They have several California Fan palms that grows lower than the Mexican Fan and are just beautiful. Ben and Ann enjoy growing plants from seed and cuttings. They have succeeded in growing a Florida Sable palm from seed and have many cut-tings, such as mountain laurel, Queen palms and a Hibiscus cutting that they got in Port Aransas, that are growing nicely. Everywhere you turn there is something in bloom, pink hibiscus, Louisiana iris with its rich purple blooms, a gorgeous yel-low esperanza, aloe vera and even a philodendron. And of course, the fruit trees are very happy! The Meyer Lemon, Mexi-

can Lime and grapefruit trees are going to be loaded with fruit! How could you not be happy surrounded by such beauty and a dazzling new pool! Ann and Ben’s pool is the perfect size for entertaining, relaxing and exercising. It is not too big and not too small, with 10,000 gallons of water and gorgeous travertine decking that is home to numerous pots of flowering plants. There was so much to see and talk about, I could go on and on with this article. The thing to take away from this month's choice for Yard of the Month is that with a goal, like creating a space that makes

you feel like you are on vacation, and imagination and persistence you too can create a “vacation” spot at home! Congratulations Ben and Ann, a very deserv-ing choice!

PLANNING AND PREPARING FOR A HURRICANE

Its hurricane season on the Gulf Coast and once again, it’s time to be thinking PREPARATION! When it comes to tropical storms and hurri-canes, its never too early or too late to get prepared unless that storm has already hit and found you NOT prepared. Then again, can one ever be

FULLY prepared for such an event? Probably not, but here are some helpful tips.

Proper hurricane and storm preparations made ahead of time probably will not totally protect your home or property from damage, but hopefully any damage can be minimized.

IMPORTANT HOME PREPARATION TIPS:

Know the elevation of your home. If you are in a surge or rising water flood zone, know what water level your property can sustain.

Landscaping: Trim your trees and shrubbery of dead limbs, especially the ones close to your home. Dead limbs are more likely to become projectiles in high winds that can break windows or injure persons.

Don’t put off repairing that fence.

Don’t use small gravel or stones in your planting beds. These can become flying bullets in high winds.

Inspect your roof for damaged tiles or shingles. Repair or replace roofs with materials rated for hur-ricane force winds.

Check for and/or install hurricane clips to secure roof trusses to side walls.

Clean rain gutters and downspouts to make sure they are clear of debris and make sure they are firmly attached to the structure.

Make sure your garage doors are rated for hurricane force winds. If not, reinforce the door(s) and tighten the connections of the door rails.

Prepare covers for your doors and windows but leave one door available for re-entry (hopefully on the opposite side from the expected flow of wind.) IF that door has a window, cover the window with plywood or a storm shutter.

Inspect storm shutters for good working order or install storm shutters on doors and windows.

Have a plan for quickly storing unsecured outdoor items such a patio furniture, lawn equipment, etc. in the event of an evacuation.

PERSONAL PREPARATIONS:

Prepare a Hurricane Supply Kit with: a few days supply of non-perishable food and water, a manual can opener, plastic spoons forks and knives and paper towels; a battery powered radio with extra batteries; flashlights and batteries; first aid supplies, matches; a whistle; a limited number of cook-ing utensils; bedding such as sleeping bags or blankets and, if you have a baby, some powdered formula, baby food, diapers, wipes and pacifiers.

In addition, make photocopies of: driver’s licenses, insurance policies, credit cards, latest utility bills, birth certificates and auto titles. Store your originals (except for credit cards) in a safe deposit box at your bank

We are in need of someone to head up the children's pool party ten-tatively scheduled for August 1st. If interested please contact Kelly Phillips at [email protected]

PERSONAL PREPARATIONS CONT:

Obtain an adequate supply of any prescription medications, an extra pair of eyeglasses, and, if applicable, hearing aid batteries and contact lens solution.

A current map of the area including any area you may evacuate to.

Car supplies including booster cables, battery powered air pump, and possibly, road flares and a white distress flag along with a basic tool kit.

Toys and/or games to occupy any children in the family.

A list of phone numbers and addresses of any family or close friends in the area and keep at least some of them informed regarding your whereabouts.

Keep a small but adequate amount of cash.

Cell phone charger.

INSURANCE TIPS – BEFORE THE STORM

Purchase your insurance early. Most insurance policies will have at least a few days waiting time before a policy is effective. When a storm is approaching is not the time to buy insurance.

Make sure you fully understand what perils are covered by any insurance you purchase. A stand-ard homeowners policy does not cover flood damage, for example.

Make sure your coverage is adequate and is for full REPLACEMENT cost.

Make sure your policy covers additional living expense you may incur for a temporary residence if your home is uninhabitable after a storm, fire or other disaster.

Don’t cancel an old policy until any new policy is in effect.

Prepare an inventory in writing and, preferably, in video or photography of your possessions for documentation in the event of a loss.

Make sure you get WINDSTORM and FLOOD coverage in this area.

In case of an evacuation, be sure to take your written and video or photographic inventory with you.

Community Garage Sale a Huge Success

The Island‐Wide Garage Sale was held on Saturday, May 16th, and Diana and I

have officially deemed it a success.  This was the 9th annual, and I think it s ll

gets be er every year.  There were 72 houses that par cipated and 76 sales

(some did mul ple sales at one loca on).   The crowds were huge, and the weather cooperated

even though it looked a li le scary the night before. A er the final tally was done, the Civic Club

now has an addi onal $802 to use for future community events.  Needless to say, it was a good

year.  Thanks to everyone who helped out.  The list is too large to men on everyone by name, and

we would undoubtedly leave someone out and hurt their feelings.  So, to all you map‐hander‐

outers who worked the corner and all you food preparers/servers who worked at Al Burns’ City

unique event. Looking forward to next year already.  It will be the 10th anniversary of the event, so

we will need to make it the best one yet.

Island Gardening Tips for July

By Julie Moncur

We go into this July without worry of drought I suspect! That makes keeping our blooming plants going strong but unfortunately the weeds too. July will be a good time to do intensive weed pulling as they respond to the rains even better than the de-sired plants. As you do your yard work of weeding and pulling back, be aware that this is a really active year for wasps and hornets. I have already been stung twice this year for not remembering they like to hang out near the nectar plants just like the butterflies and bees. Also be on the alert for the red ant piles that always crop up after our rains as they look for higher ground like our compost piles and raised beds. Otherwise, pace yourself in the July heat and enjoy our lush green yards! -In the days we don’t get rain, remember to water plants as needed and as early as possible.

The exception is hanging baskets, as they often show more stress mid-afternoon. If they are in direct sun-light consider moving them to a shady spot if possible. -Many island trees have had growth spurts due to sev-eral nice rain showers this spring. Light pruning of trees to increase sun penetration to lawns and flower beds is OK except for oaks, which must be pruned in winter to help avoid oak wilt. Trim dead limbs to avoid them from falling on your house or neighbors house in summer storms! -Replenish mulch to retain soil mois-ture in beds and around trunks of young fruit and shade trees. Makes the yard look nice to boot! -Summer heat often brings in aphids and leafhoppers on crepe myrtles. Treat promptly to avoid black sooty mold, which grows on the excrement dropped by in-sects.

-It's a good time to transplant coleus for summer and fall color in lightly shaded areas -Keep deadheading summer bloomers and pinching back coleus, impatiens, marigolds, begonias and cop-per plants.

-Keep indoor tropical plants outside in a shady area for the next few months. Add their feeding schedule to outside plant feeding. -Soak used clay pots in a 10-percent bleach solution (1 part bleach, 9 parts water) and then rinse before reuse. A wire brush will remove white mineral depos-its. -Plant bluebonnet and other spring wildflowers late in the month. They must germinate in late summer or early Fall. -End of month, time to divide spring flowering perenni-als, such as iris, shasta daisy, oxeye, gaillardia, can-nas, day lilies, violets, liriope and ajuga,

Happy Fourth of July and Happy Island Gardening,

Julie
