Happy New Year Clear Lake Shores!

It is hard to believe that it is already February; the years seem to fly by faster and faster as I age—kinda scary, my mother said that would happen and she was right!

A huge thank you to Priscilla Duffy, Shanna McGinty, and all our hosts for the Progressive Christmas Party in December. Although it was very rainy—a theme that reminded everyone of the 4thof July festivities—it was well attended and everyone had a great time.

I hope that everyone is ready to come out and be social again. We start with our monthly meeting on February 7th, please come and join us. Mancakes continues our Valentine’s Tradition on February 16th and our Mardi Gras celebration will be on February 23rd. Look for more information about those two events in this issue.

Looking forward, March is a quiet month for us; this is fortunate, as April is busy! Officer elections occur in April and I will be finished with my President duties. If you are interested in serving as President, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns. I would enjoy sharing with you the re-sponsibilities the President has.

I pray you all have enjoyed a blessed start to 2019; and as always, remember to savor the sunsets, enjoy the company, and try to meet someone new as often as you can!

Megan Morris

PARKS COMMITTEE By Chris Richardson

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and that everyone enjoyed all the Christmas decorations at the entrance to CLS and around the clubhouse. Here's to 2019 filled with much health and happiness and all the good stuff for our CLS residents and staff.

Luckily, we are having a much milder winter than last year so our plants/shrubs in our parks and pool area should survive the winter in better shape.

GOOD NEWS!!!!! The Veterans Memorial Bench arrived a week ago and is installed at Sun Dial Park. By the time you are reading this, the engraving should be completed. Besides donating funds for the bench, Home Depot included some plants & shrubs and we thank Jorge & crew for getting them planted. When out and about, take the time to enjoy the views from our new bench!

Hopefully as the weather warms, CLS residents can get out & enjoy all the amenities that our parks have to offer.

Let us know if you have any questions or ideas to share. Your Pool & Parks Committee: Helle Brown, Diana Chronister, Suzanne Hubbard, Diana Hoerner, Cheryl Coward and me Chris Richardson. 281-799-8906

Volunteer Spotlight  by Doris Sanders

Nancy McDonald and

Linda Merryman

Although not strictly a volunteer position, since members are paid a token sum per monthly meeting, those serving on the water board surely qualify for inclusion in this column. Giving up their time in an attempt to represent Clear Lake Shores on decisions affecting all of us, Linda Merryman and Nancy McDonald contributed years of service to this little-understood but im-portant undertaking. Linda and Nancy met at Seabrook Shipyard, where both kept their boats, in ’96 or ’97. Moving those boats to the same dock at Lakewood Yacht Club, the two women and their husbands con-tinued to make connections. Linda and husband Paul, having earlier moved from Lake Conroe to a townhouse at LYC, finally followed Nancy and husband Scott to Clear Lake Shores in 1999. The McDonalds had made the move earlier from West University, never looking back on their previous land-locked life. Cruising was a big part of both women’s lives, but certainly not the only part. Nancy worked in the oil and gas business for years, rising to the position of vice president before retiring to cruise full time. Linda, trained as a paralegal, worked for Continental Airlines in various legal and hu-man resource management positions. And neither stopped there, as Nancy, after a period of full-time cruising, became a board member of Lakewood Yacht Club and Linda involved herself in or-ganizations such as Bay Area Pet Adoptions and Today’s Harbor. But the contribution for which they are most noted here in Clear Lake Shores is their involve-ment in the Water Board. In 2004, Linda ran for the elected position, served for four years, lost in the next round of voting, ran again in 2010, and served again, for a total of twelve years. In 2012, Nancy was appointed to fill a vacant position, and ran in and won two succeeding contests. Nancy served a total of seven years and served as secretary and vice president of the body, while Linda was president for part of her tenure. Clearly movers and shakers, both Linda and Nancy do know how to relax. Island walkers are likely to pass Nancy happily working in her flowerbeds, and she has been known to create some beautiful jewelry, much of which she has sold in the past. In fact, Nancy’s jewelry was featured in Mary’s Frame Shop and Art Gallery when it was open on Marina Bay Drive. And Linda, when not volunteering, takes advantage of her house’s perfect position on the island, watching the boat traffic on Clear Lake and enjoying Goldie the dog. Nancy and Scott sold their boat a couple of years ago, but the Merrymans still own theirs, though they use it less than they did in the past.

Luckily, when Clear Lake Shores' water board reps stepped down recently, Ronnie Richards stepped up, winning his recent election and thereby guaranteeing that CLS would have represen-tation on this critical entity. Incidentally, Linda’s husband Paul has served on the water board in Channelview for forty years, helping to form the first water authority in the state of Texas. But though neither Linda nor Nancy misses the work, they are proud of their service to us, as are we. Thank you, ladies.

The EDC Looks Ahead in 2019

Ronnie Richards recently completed a 10‐year term as President of the Clear Lake Shores Economic Development Corpora‐

our community’s quality of life.  He provided cri cal leadership for such ini a ves as:

The paving of Aspen Rd.

cri cal overflow parking for several Clear Lake Shores businesses.

Ronnie and his wife, Nancy, are successful entrepreneurs who understand the challenges of small businesses, and Ronnie has

given generously of his  me over the past decade in support of making Clear Lake Shores a more prosperous and pleasant

place in which to live.

In the December 2018 EDC mee ng, I assumed the role of president – con ngent on Ronnie’s promise to con nue as a board

member and to make himself available whenever I need help.  I am excited about serving as president, but I am a lot more

confident in my ability to do so effec vely with Ronnie’s help.

For those who are not familiar with the purpose (or even the existence of) the EDC, I would encourage you to read the excel‐

of Economic Development Corpora ons.  In 1996, Clear Lake Shores approved forma on of the Clear Lake Shores EDC.  The

EDC’s ac vi es are directed by a board of directors comprised of seven members appointed by the city council to staggered

$10,000 must be approved by city council.

In the January board mee ng, the EDC directors reviewed a proposed list of ini a ves for considera on over the next two

years although some of the ini a ves will take priority such as:

1.  An cipa ng and mi ga ng any impact on Clear Lake Shores businesses resul ng from the widening of FM 146.

2.  Finalizing and adop ng a framework for assessing proposed projects and business assistance opportuni es to ensure

3.  Iden fying and implemen ng infrastructure improvements and/or marke ng programs that will increase sales tax reve‐

The ini al list was only preliminary, and we invite you to submit any sugges ons for considera on via email to any board

THE HOUSTON HOUSING MARKET BREAKS RECORDS IN 2018

Sluggish December sales and limited housing supply can’t slow down overall real estate activity for the year

HOUSTON — (January 9, 2019) — The Houston real estate market set new records in 2018 despite uncertainty across the region when the year began, with many survivors of Hurricane Harvey still rebuilding their homes and lives. Single-family home sales for the full year surpassed 2017’s record volume by nearly four percent. However, as 2019 gets under-way, housing inventory remains constrained – still sitting below its more balanced pre-Harvey levels.

According to the Houston Association of Realtors’ (HAR) 2018 annual report, single family home sales rose 3.8 percent to 82,177 while sales of all property types totaled 98,323, a 3.7-percent increase over 2017’s record volume. Total dollar volume for full-year 2018 jumped 21.5 percent to a record-breaking $28 billion..

The single-family home median price (the figure at which half of the homes sold for more and half sold for less) rose 3.4 percent to $240,000. That marks the highest median price ever for a December. The average price increased 4.7 percent to $306,314, which is also an all-time December high.

On a year-to-date basis, the average price rose 2.6 percent to $298,982 while the median price increased 3.3 percent to $237,500. Har.com

Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces!!!

I have an exciting announcement! I've started a cooking show with my partner Cara Miller called Simply Season‐al!

As the name denotes, Simply Seasonal is a show that simply explains how to heal the body through seasonal foods!

When there's sickness or "dis‐ease" in the body, that's showing an imbalance. And that imbalance comes from our disconnection between us and the earth. So, if we simply eat foods the earth provides during each season, we are nourished with the exact nutrients and energy needed for each season bringing back balance so we can heal and thrive!

If you want to take back your health, then this is the show for you!

Cara and I've seen incredible things happen through this simple approach. Seasonal eating has been at the heart of both of our health coaching practices because we've seen it heal our clients and even ourselves!

Seasonal eating is simply common sense. It leaves you with tons of "aha!" moments because it's the way humans have been eating for 1,000s of years.  We've just been mislead for the last 100+years through agenda driven in‐dustries who have taken our power away from our health and ability to heal. These industries leave you feeling powerless while you reach deep into your pocket to pay for the "answers". But as we all know, those answers are only temporary band‐aids focused on suppressing symptoms, not healing.

There are 13 weeks in each season (winter, spring, summer, fall) and we are releasing a new FREE episode each week! Each episode comes with a simple seasonal recipe so you can balance, heal, and thrive!

Head on over to www.simply‐seasonal.com and sign up for email updates. That way, our weekly episodes are sent straight to you and you won't miss a thing!

Gardening Tips By Julie Moncur

February is one of my favorite months for garden! With the cooler weather I can cover up head to toe and get busy pruning, weeding, mulching and plan ng without the pesky mosquitoes interrup ng my labor. It's also a great  me to put in your spring flowers and reshape your landscape. Just like rearranging furniture, changing up your landscape is refreshing to the spirit. Time to start fresh.   For some great organic new plants,, (remove second ,)check out the Master Gardener Plant sales held this month. The Galveston County Spring sale is just a short interes ng drive to Hitchcock and the Harris County Precinct 2 sale is at the Pasadena Fair Grounds. Check out their websites for more details!

‐Got roses? Except for climbers (add a space) (which can be pruned most any  me), think of pruning around the 14th (handy that it falls on a weekend this year!) add close parenthesis  Take advantage and shape them like you want them to grow in their space.

‐Time to transplant mature or established trees and shrubs while they are dormant.

‐Plant bare‐root roses, fruit and shade trees, pecans and dormant shrubs. Wait un l plants put on new growth before lightly fer lizing with 15‐5‐10 or a water‐soluble fer lizer.

‐Overwatering kills houseplants. Allow soil surface to dry between waterings. Use liquid Miracle Grow houseplant food every  me you water.  ‐Lightly fer lize spring bloomers, including pansies and snapdragons.  Again with bloodmeal or 21‐0‐0.

‐Schedule the first fruit tree spray when buds start to swell but before they start to open.  Apply malithion and benomyl for insect and disease control.

‐Plant seeds for an old fashion perennial bed: nastur um, ageratum, portulaca, sunflower, torenia, and zinnia.

‐To a ract bu erflies, plant ageratum, phlox, buddleia, salvia, rudbeckia, bee balm and lantana.

‐Divide crowded canna tubers for tall vigorous plants with more blooms.

‐Plant late spring and summer blooming annual seed and perennial plants.

‐Look for bagworms on juniper, cypress and other trees and shrubs. Handpick now to reduce spring popula on levels.

‐Empty your used tea bags around the base of azaleas and camellias. they will benefit from the acid in the tea leaves.

‐Pot Plumerias near end of the month; move outside on pre y days. for larger Plumerias, sink the pot in the ground; helps them stay upright.

‐Loosen the compacted soils around early spring annuals to insure aera on.

CITY NEWS Hello Clear Lake Shores:

I hope the new year has been good to you.  I am enjoying my first winter without brutally cold temperatures and ‘free’ snow, and I feel like I’m ge ng a li le so .

The City recently installed and landscaped around the Veteran’s Memorial Bench at Sundial Park.  This was dedicated in No‐vember and the turn out by residents was impressive.  A big thanks to Bud Solmonsson who really took this project from idea to comple on.  It will remain an island staple for many years to come.  Look for the dedica on plaque to be added shortly.   A huge thank you to Home Depot and local store manager Jeff for making the project a success.

Expect some inconvenience if you use Birch Road to access the island in the coming months.  Galveston County is going to replace the second bridge star ng in a couple months.  However, u lity reloca on must also take place prior and that may impact us, albeit temporarily an likely unannounced.  U li es plan to have seamless and planned cut‐overs during reloca‐ons however some mes problems arise.  Try to be understanding  if such things occur.  The purpose of such upgrades are

be er delivery of services and safer sustainable access to island.   I will a end construc on mee ngs once they are an‐nounced and keep you posted.  Again, it is a county project, not city, though we are impacted.

In February, look for SH146 construc on to start in Seabrook at Red Bluff Rd.  If you have been through the area recently you may have no ced ac vity.  This project is expected to take five years to complete and I will have opportunity to update you as it progresses.  I would an cipate the impact being no ceable to Clear Lake Shores and our traffic pa erns in about two years.  Economic impact remains to be seen.

January 16 through February 15, 2019 residents of Clear Lake Shores may register as a candidate for mayor or one of our two open city council spots.  The appropriate form has been placed on the recently redesigned city website and is available at City Hall.  Reminder to poten al candidates, please read instruc ons carefully and get the form notarized prior to submis‐sion, in person, at City Hall.  The completed form can be submi ed at City Hall during normal business hours un l 5pm, Fri‐day, February 15th.  City employees cannot notarize these forms as they are poten ally involved in the municipal elec on process.

I an cipate having video recordings of City Council mee ngs available in a month or so.  These will not be broadcast live and will be posted a few days a er the mee ng.  You will be able watch these videos at YouTube and we will provide a link, they should work from any internet connected device.

This  me of year it is possible to have intermi ent freezing temperatures.  Please be aware of exposed piping on your home and take appropriate ac on to insulate or ‘winterize’.  Having an elevated structure with air flow under it makes it quicker to freeze.  Like the TX‐DoT signs near bridges warning about icy condi ons.  Watch the weather forecasts, and consider wind speed and direc on, when determining the poten al for freezing.  Neighbors, plants and pets may need special considera‐on as well.

City Council mee ngs are held at the Clubhouse, the first and third Tuesday of the month star ng at 7pm.  If you have never been I encourage you to see another side of island life and meet other residents by a ending.

Have you missed the books once kept on shelves in the downstairs foyer of City Hall? Once a convenient place to browse for a new read or to offload those already read, the library vanished after Hurricane Harvey. Now, taking advantage of the opportunities some-

times offered by unhappy circumstances, the city has decided to revamp. Henceforth, the adult library will share space with the children’s library; the room, located on the first floor of the City Hall/Police Force building, will simply be the library. While most of the space will still be devoted to children’s books, one whole section (next to the alcove that holds picture books) will hold books for adults. Stay tuned for more information on the now-being-revamped library, but in the meantime, help yourself to a good book or two, in this take-a-book, leave-a-book area.

NO MAGAZINES, PLEASE!

As for books for children, please hold off on donations for now as we clear out, cull, and reorganize the library, and, please, NO TOYS!

Thank you to all who have helped and continue to help with this project!
