It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. The day before is either called Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. It's a day to party, by using up all the meats, fats and sugars in your home before the fast begins. Churches around the country usually celebrate that day with pancakes. Lent is a 40-day period of preparation for Easter. It offers Christians opportunities to reflect on the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ specifically around the week of his Passion, which we call Holy Week. Christians celebrate Lent in a variety of ways: fasting, prayer, self-denial, reflection, study, and contemplation. Others might add some type of mission or service to their lives. While it may not be the happiest time of the year, it also doesn't need to be miserable. Whatever you choose to do, and in whatever way you choose to do it, use it as a means of grace by which you are brought into a closer walk with Jesus Christ. If you choose a discipline, and fail, don't beat yourself up. Just know that it's a sign of our humanity, and the need that we all have to rely heavily on God's eternal strength. Look for details to come on the ways that we'll be celebrating Lent at BAUMC. Peace, Byron

BAUMC GARDENS It might seem odd to be talking about gardens and gardening while the temperature outside is in the teens and snow is in the forecast, but it’s a hot topic for two very important reasons. The first reason is to offer a sincere THANK YOU to the team of Harford County Master Gardeners led by Rob and Carol McCormack who have maintained the gardens facing Linwood Avenue since 2011. I’m sure all would agree that, through their work, our church has been blessed and enhanced with beau ful and invi ng landscapes. The second reason for discussing gardening in the winter is that 2016 will be the last year that Rob and Carol’s team will be maintaining our gardens. As such, we need to find interested and willing volunteers to work with Rob and Carol during 2016 to learn the ropes and take over management of the BAUMC gardens in 2017. If you love plants and gardens and think you might be interested, please contact the church office

Celebrate Leap Year!   All women of the church are invited to celebrate Leap Year 2016 during an a ernoon of fellowship and food on Sunday, February 28 in McComas Hall.  Sponsored by the Bel Air United Methodist Women, it's a Girl's Night Out in the a ernoon!   We will be watching the movie "Leap Year" starring Amy Adams and Ma hew Goode.  This 2010 American roman c comedy is about a woman who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on Leap Day, when tradi on supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage.  Her plans are interrupted by a series of increasingly unlikely events and are further complicated when she hires a handsome innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin.   The movie starts at 2:00 PM (with popcorn, of course!) and then we'll enjoy pizza, salad, and dessert a erward.  Please call Alice Archer at 410‐838‐7357 or e‐mail [email protected] if you're planning to a end.
