Message from the Pastor

BACK TO SCHOOL – BACK TO CHURCH – BACK TO GOD

It’s that  me of year again… back to school.  I’ve already seen the teachers and 

administrators heading back, and I know that students are soon on their way.  We’re 

gearing up with supplies: pencils, pens, binders, crayons, glue, scissors, back packs, and 

lots more.  Excitement is in the air, and perhaps a li le anxiety as well.  That’s to be 

expected.  New situa ons can make us feel a li le anxious un l we get in there and get 

se led.   

Even if you’re beyond school, or you don’t have any students in school, you’re s ll 

caught up in the energy.  There’s a beehive of wonderful ac vity within each school.  

The school buses are back on the roads.  And, the stores are busy luring us in with sales.  

“Back to School” is in the air.  As you think about this season, I also want you to think 

about another theme that’s close to my heart ‐ back to church.   

Some of us get out of the habit of church.  We may s ll be in vaca on mode.  We may 

have simply dri ed off for a bit as we tend to do from  me‐to‐ me, and as God’s 

people have o en done through many genera ons.  In response to this, the Bible has 

an o  repeated refrain in the Old Testament:  

“Return to me declares the LORD Almighty, and I will return to you.”  Zechariah 1: 3   

Periodically, this invita onal call went out to God’s people.  God called.  The leaders 

proclaimed it.  The people responded.  It’s a wonderful reminder to us that God’s arms 

are always open wide ready to embrace and receive us.  Being in good rela onship with 

God is the perfect way to journey into any and every new season.  When you get into 

the doldrums, you’ll be able to keep these blessings before you: God is with us through 

the exam.  God is with us through the decision‐making.  God is with us through the 

challenges and the ups and downs of each new day.   

The week of September 13th is a week of special celebra ons and prayers with our Back 

to School theme in mind.  Please check this edi on of the Spire for details.

Youth Happenings

Dear BAUMC Family,  I am so blessed and amazed by our youth program. Fall tends to be the  me of year where we get crazy busy with beginning of school and the end of summer vaca ons. I am reminded of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel’s words “Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ....get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.” I pray that, as you enter this fall season you remember to be con nually amazed by God. God Bless, Phillip Nolan Youth Director  Bal more Mission Trip Bal more Mission Trip was amazing! I am so proud of the work our youth did down there. I was very humbled and amazed by the experience. It was awesome to see God at work through our youth even amongst the chaos. Join us on August 30th and September 6th to hear tes mony, pictures, and a message delivered by our very own Mark Ciampaglio about the mission trip. I look forward to sharing this experience with you all!  

Upcoming Events: FUSE Fall Retreat Spend the weekend of September 18th (through the 20th) in worship with your friends and leaders! This retreat is open to all middle school students (6th – 8th grade). Contact Cheryl (firthc@baumc.com) or Phil (nolanp@baumc.com) to sign up! ‐ signups end September 6th, so don't wait! Cost is $120. See you there!  Gaga Ball Day In conjunc on with Mt. Zion UMC we will be hos ng a joint youth group Gaga ball day event. Invite your friends for some awesome compe on, great food, and great fellowship. Join us on September 12th from 3 pm – 6 pm and a pizza dinner a er.   Bel Air Skate Day Due to some bad weather on August 11th, we had to postpone Skate Day. However, I am excited to announce on Saturday September 5th, we will be hos ng a skate event for our community! In conjunc on with Skatology Board Shop and Stalefish Board Co., we will host a skate boarding event for any and all skate boarders in our community! We will have food, awesome skate ramps, and some great music! If you know any skate boarders or see any around,  feel free to spread the word! The event will be held from 1 – 4 p.m. See you there!  Confirma on 2015 – 2016 Confirma on is an incredible and life changing experience! Orienta on will be held on August 30th and September 6th in the Youth Center (11 AM to 1:00 PM), lunch will be provided. Confirmands, parents, volunteers and mentors must a end one of these sessions . You will meet Pastor Elizabeth, Phil Nolan, our Youth Director, and our new Senior Pastor Byron Brought. We ask that each family share in the cost of confirma on. This year the cost is $150. Classes will be on Sundays (11 AM to 1 PM). A full schedule will be provided. The first class will be Sunday, September 13th. Confirmands will be confirmed on Confirma on Sunday, May 15.

Adult Discipleship Fall Classes 

TAC ‐ TUESDAY AT CHURCH CLASSES, 7:00PM‐ 8:00PM, CHILD CARE PROVIDED

Beginning September 15th , you have opportuni es on Tuesday nights to take your next step in the direc on of following God’s purpose for your life (that’s called discipleship). You can begin your evening with a meal designed for individuals to gather as a group for a Family Dinner (serving will begin at 6 p.m. and last un l 6:45 p.m. $ dona on appreciated). We have classes for every age available (7p.m. to 8p.m.) with varied interests. Check it out on September 15th! 

 Fearless Conversa on (September 15‐ November 17,  room 103) A fearless conversa on is a healthy open dialogue that addresses "wondering" ques ons about faith and God in a compassionate environment. Par cipants will dig into grappling ques ons that may not have a "right" answer, but will explore what the Bible has to say.  Our theme topic, “How can we be fully faithful when we are fully flawed?” is the provoca ve conversa on about the hu‐man condi on based on 1‐2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles and Psalms. Some ques ons are, “Is it okay to complain to God in prayer?”, “What’s my story in God’s eyes?”, and “What is God’s role in war & poli cs?”, "Why does God appear so violent at  mes?", and "What does it mean that God looks at the heart?" (Par cipant’s guide‐ $6)   Chris anity’s Family Tree (September 15‐ November 3, room 202) In these video presenta ons, United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton presents inspiring vision of eight Chris an denomina ons and faith tradi ons. Comparing the Chris an family to our own extended families, he contends that each denomina on has a unique, valuable perspec ve to offer on the Chris an faith. For each group, he gives a brief history, outlines major beliefs, and describes some things we can learn from that tradi on to strengthen our own Chris an faith. The denomina ons and faith tradi‐ons include Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Bap sts, Pentecostalism, and Methodism.  

(Par cipant’s guide‐ $10)  Confident Paren ng; Be The Parent Your Family Needs  (September 15‐ October 20, room 101)                                                                                 Somewhere in the busyness of life we have good inten ons, but daily frustra ons and ongoing struggles might be evidence that we were be er trained to drive a car or pursue a career than raise children. We will be addressing key issues that form tools for successful paren ng. We want to equip you to become a more confident parent. There will be laughter (Deb’s teaching),  mes of working through frustra ons and camaraderie from folks in the same boat as you. Words such as love, logic, authen c, insigh ul, prayer, pa ent, connected, comfor ng and celebratory are some of the things we will be looking at together.  Fuse (Middle School) meets in the Youth Center BIG d.o.G.’s (disciples of God) Elementary Kids meet in room 130 Li le d.o.G.’s (disciples of God) Preschool Kids meet in Room 102 Puppies  Birth – 2 Yrs Old  in Nursery Area.  ***A thumb tack has two basic components: the head and the body. Please take these opportuni es on Tuesdays to have your body learn and follow our Head, Jesus Christ.

Beginnings: An Introduc on to the Chris an Faith (September 16 ‐ November 11, Library) 

This study introduces the basic ques ons that most Chris ans have such as – “ So, is this all there is?”, “What happens when I die?”, “If I don’t feel lost, why do I need to be found?”, “Who is Jesus and what did He do?’, and “Can I start over?” It is intended for adults exploring & seeking a walk with God and it encourages a personal rela onship with Jesus.  In each session, par cipants will watch a short DVD segment, study Scripture, explore Chris an faith and teachings, and experience the small group se ng. (Par cipant’s guide ‐ $7)

Experiencing God  (September 16 ‐ December 8, Narthex)  

Experiencing God challenges Chris ans to experience the fullness of a life lived in a fellowship with the loving, personal God.  This powerful in‐depth study shows how to deepen your own rela onship with God and discover your special place in His kingdom.  The structure of the study is centered on the “Seven Reali es of Experiencing God” which uses scripture as the source of authority for faith and prac ce.  More than a million Chris ans have embraced this study and many claim it to be life‐changing. (Par cipant’s workbook ‐$18) 

 SUNDAY CLASS 11AM ‐ 12:30PM 

 Invita on to John: A short‐term Disciple Bible study (September 13‐ December 6, Library)   The Bible has four Gospel accounts of the life, ministry, death and resurrec on of Jesus.   Three of these Gospels are very similar to each other in both what they tell about the story of Jesus and how they tell it. However, the Gospel of John stands apart. In it, we find Jesus speaking not in parables but in lengthy discourses. We overhear Jesus talking with Nicodemus and Mary Magdalene. We marvel at Jesus calling Lazarus from the tomb and washing his disciples' feet.  We linger over Jesus' great promises: "For God so loved the world..."I am the bread of life..." This twelve week study invites par cipants to come and see this Jesus‐‐to hear him speak, to see his signs,‐‐and to consider anew what it means to be his followers. (Par cipant’s guide ‐ $15)

Support Groups

DivorceCare is a thirteen‐week class to guide those experiencing separa on or divorce towards a successful healing journey.  Our next session will begin on Wednesday, September 16, in room 115 at 6:30 pm.  This class is open to anyone in our church or community who is currently in the process of separa on or divorce.  For more informa on, please contact Chuck Heatwole at 410‐836‐2947, or consult the DivorceCare web‐site at www.divorcecare.org. 

  The way out of grief is through it. There is no shortcut.  The very worst kind of grief is yours.  Grief  is hard work. Effec ve grief work  is not done alone. If you or someone you know is mourning the death of a loved one, we invite you to join us for the next 13 week session of GriefShare beginning Tuesday, September 8 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

During the month of September, Kinship Care Month is observed.  The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, sponsored by Bel Air United Methodist Church, is proud to recognize the children and their grandparents and other rela ves who raise them who ensure their safety, promote their well being and establish a stable household.  Our Mission is to provide a confiden al place that gives grandparents and other rela ves the opportunity to discuss issues that relates to Grandparents Raising Grandchildren while fostering loving and caring rela onships within the group.  

Na onally, 2.7 million children are living with grandparents and other rela ves in kinship care of which over 51,000 of these young children reside in Maryland.  In 

Harford County, 1,500 grandparents have primary responsibility for the children in their care, of whom more than 800 are single grandmothers. Kinship care provides the best opportunity to retain the child's cultural heritage and community  es. The Grandparent's Group offers uncondi onal support to grandparents and other rela ves as they address the emo onal trauma of children losing their parents. We are increasingly aware of the challenges faced by children and grandparents to work in partnership with the educa on, legal, social services, mental health and other systems to access services that can enable children to flourish in all facets of their life.

BLOOD DRIVE NEWS

July Results …  The July 13th Blood Drive yielded 65 units of blood.   On behalf of the many people whose health (and in some cases, their life) depends on blood dona ons, we express hear elt thanks to each and every person who came out to support the Blood Drive.

Mark your calendar now … summer flew by quickly and our calendar will start filling up when September arrives.  Our next Blood Drive will be on Monday, September 14th. Appointments can be scheduled on the sign‐up sheet across from the church office.  Please make the Blood Drive a priority in your schedule if you are an eligible donor ‐  every dona on is  cri cal to someone’s chance for recovery.

Do you enjoy kni ng and croche ng?  We are looking for volunteers for the Prayer Shawl Ministry.  There will be an ini al mee ng on Thursday, September 10 in the Prayer Chapel at 10am for instruc ons/pa erns.  We regularly meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 10am, but it is not necessary to a end ‐ you can work at home and bring the completed shawls to the church office.  Please contact Pat Jones.

“A Brush with Kindness Week” September 19th through 26th, 2015

What? Habitat Susquehanna will help with exterior minor repairs including pain ng; re‐a aching 

gu ers, minor fence repairs, and minor soffit/fascia a achment/replacement.
