MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

 Mission, service, music, worship, prayer, Bible study, small groups, food, food, and 

FOOD!  These are just some of the wonderful things that I’ve experienced in just two 

weeks here at BAUMC.  I’m overwhelmed by how much you have done, and how much 

you are doing.  The soup kitchen and the food distribu on are sights to behold.   

I feel very honored and humbled to be welcomed and accepted into your community of 

faith.  My family goes way back with Pastor Barry and the Hidey family.  They were 

members of Salem UMC near Woodlawn, where my father served as pastor.  Barry was 

the youth pastor at that  me.  God must be at work here.     

I’m thankful for the pastors, and staff, and leaders of the church.  What an incredible 

team!   They’re gi ed, incredibly efficient, and have such a passion for serving God and 

serving the church.  I’m thankful for all of you, the good people of BAUMC, who serve 

God in great ways big and small.     

If we haven’t met yet, I look forward to mee ng you.  My wife’s name is Kristen.  She’s 

a music teacher, formally with Anne Arundel County Public Schools.  She enjoys singing, 

piano, solving puzzles, reading, and walking.  My oldest son is Josiah, soon to be a 

junior at C. Milton Wright.  He enjoys cross country, track, swimming, cello, singing, and 

watching movies.  My youngest son is Nicholas, an incoming freshman at C. Milton.  He 

loves any sport, but especially soccer and lax.  He’s dabbled with a number of 

instruments, but has most recently played percussion in the school band.  His father 

thinks he spends too much  me on Xbox.   

Outside of ministry, my passion is farming and gardening, which I had the luxury of 

doing as a hobby, not as a profession.  We raised chickens, lambs, and hogs.  Pumpkins 

are my favorite crop, but I’ve also raised tomatoes, corn, beans, and blackberries.   I 

enjoy looking at an que tractors, an que farm equipment, and surveying the livestock 

at farm fairs.  I also enjoy sports, hiking, and reading.   

Whether our passions connect or not, I look forward to ge ng to know you.  I look 

forward to being in ministry with you, and I’m excited about what we may be able to do 

together for the greater glory of God’s kingdom, here in Bel Air and beyond.   

I prefer to be called Byron, but you’re welcome to call me whatever is most 

comfortable for you.  The term pastor, means shepherd, which I like very much.  If you 

need to use a  tle, then feel free to throw a “Pastor” in front of my name.

GO! UPDATE

AUGUST 2015

These past weeks have had some extreme temperature and humidity and also rela vely nice summer days. It’s  me to relax and slow down some.  Wait ‐ except for the GO! Teams! The teams have not stopped for summer.  Having completed their charters to define their focus, GO! teams have been ac vely working to understand the core values of BAUMC while also com‐ple ng ministry inventories. Ministry inventories will be complete soon, providing in‐depth informa on on all of the ministries and missions of our church. This is one of many “pieces of the puzzle” GO! Teams will use to discern God’s direc on for us going forward.  Some of the oth‐er puzzle pieces are stewardship reports, demographic informa on of our community, our values, our vision, input from the congrega on, and the Readiness360 Survey.   We thank you very much for comple ng the survey. It was not exactly what everyone expected, but it has provided a good look at who we are, what areas we have weakness and where we have strength.  This is snapshot in  me to understand the struggles we face with insight into ways to Biblically address them. “Good” response for Readiness360 is typically 10% of the worshipping popula on. We had 40% of our worshipping popula on, represen ng 20% of our total congrega on – a great result! Also, the makeup of par cipants of the survey closely mirrored the makeup of our congrega on based on age group and length of  me involved in our church. This allows us to be confident the results reflect the thoughts of this body of Christ, as all age groups and experience levels of the church were accurately represented.  This is cri cal for the GO! Teams to move forward using the re‐sults.  We have been able to share the ini al results with Pastor Byron as we began to bring him onboard with the GO! team progress.  Over the next months, we will bring all of our sources of input together to get a broad perspec ve of the life and personality of our church.  With this view we will seek God’s direc on on the values and vision that will help align us and put plans together to get us moving toward a common vision.   Please pray for all the GO! teams and their work as we represent you in this process of discernment. Please look for more com‐munica on on GO!, understand what we are doing, offer input and take part as the opportuni es arise. In Christ,  The GO! Core Team

Church Office Hours— Monday—Friday 9:00 am—4:30 pm

Have you ever no ced the various colored fabric decora ons in the church?  They are called paraments and are the cloths that adorn the altar, pulpit, communion table and other parts of the sanctuary.  The paraments have specific colors that tell us something about our Chris an year.  The fair linen is the topmost cloth on the main altar.  It represents the shroud in which Jesus was wrapped for burial.  It is embroidered with 5 crosses, one in each corner and a centered one.  The five crosses are meant to depict the five wounds of Christ.      The Chris an year is governed by two cycles: the Christmas Cycle (Advent‐Christmas‐Epiphany) and the Easter Cycle (Lent‐Easter‐Pentecost) which are punctuated by seasons known as ordinary  me.   Within each cycle are a preparatory season symbolized by the colors purple or blue, and a fes val season symbolized by the color white.  A er each cycle there is an ordinary  me of growth symbolized by the color green.  Thus, there is a sequence of seasons using purple or blue, white and green.  (The United Methodist Book of Worship)  We are currently in the ordinary  me between Pentecost and Advent.  The parament color is green.  It is the color of growth and symbolizes our growth in faith and understanding in the teachings of the church.  In our church, light green is used star ng with the second Sunday a er Pentecost un l the first Sunday of fall (a er 9/20).  At this  me, the paraments are changed to dark green which remain in place un l the week before Advent.  Most of the paraments at Bel Air United Methodist Church were designed and made by members of the Altar Guild many years ago. The Altar Guild is a team of church volunteers whose responsibility is to make sure the sanctuary, especially the Chancel and altar, are ready for worship each Sunday.     As the liturgical year progresses look for more ar cles in The Spire explaining the changes in the paraments.

September 13  WE’RE BACK CELEBRATION! Sunday School Teachers are back for another school year of sharing God’s Word & Love.   Bring your backpack to church and we will fill it with a surprise and bless you and the pack for this School year. This is a yearly milestone in our children’s lives.

Dear BAUMC Family, 

This summer has been a blast! Camp, Bal more Mission Trip, Small Groups, Fun Fridays, and Word on the 

Water have been awesome! Summer is one of my favorite  mes of year where our youth get to 

experience some of our biggest and greatest events of the year. I am amazed at what our youth can do 

and how deeply they think during our small group  me. It has been amazing ge ng to know our youth. 

Can you believe it has almost been a year since my arrival? Some mes I can’t believe how fast this past 

year has gone by and look forward to many more.

Camp was amazing! West River Camp was a great  me for both diving deep 

with God and building rela onships with each other. I look forward to next 

year’s camp! 

Bal more Mission Trip As I write this to you all we are preparing to leave on our annual youth mission trip to Bal more. I can already tell from the prepara ons and mee ngs that this trip is going to be great! I look forward to sharing many photos and great memories with you all in the future!

Youth Upcoming Events

Word on the Water Word on the Water Once a month during the summer we will be having word on the water. We will go to a pool for a bible study, food, and fun.   August 8th – Hosted by the Li le Family  Bel Air Skate Day I am excited to announce on Tuesday August 11th that we will be hos ng a skate event for our com‐munity! In conjunc on with Skatology Board Shop and Stalefish Board Co, we will host a skate board‐ing event for any and all skate boarders in our community! We will have food, awesome skate ramps, and some great food! If you know any skate boarders or see any around feel free to spread the word! The event will be held from 1 – 4 p.m. see you there!  Paint Lock‐In Are you  red of walking into the youth room and seeing the same old colors? So are we! Join us Au‐gust 21‐22 for an awesome lock‐in! We will be pain ng the youth room brand new colors! As we paint we will share in fun, food, and fellowship. Also we will be doing a bible study on transforma on and renewal of faith. Contact Phil Nolan for more informa on.  Confirma on 2015 – 2016 Confirma on is an incredible and life changing experience! Orienta on will be held on August 30th and September 6th in the Youth Center (11 AM to 1:00 PM). Lunch will be provided. Please a end ONE of the sessions. You will meet Pastor Elizabeth, Phil Nolan our youth director, and our new Senior Pastor Byron Brought. We ask that each family share in the cost of confirma on. This year the cost is $150. Classes will be on Sundays (11 AM to 1 PM). A full schedule will be provided. The first class will be Sunday,  September 13th. Confirmands will be confirmed on Confirma on Sunday, May 15.

Adult Discipleship Fall Classes 

TAC ‐ TUESDAY AT CHURCH CLASSES,  7:00PM‐ 8:00PM, CHILD CARE PROVIDED  

Fearless Conversa on (September 15‐ November 17, room 103) A fearless conversa on is a healthy open dialogue that addresses "wondering" ques ons about faith and God in a compassionate environment. Par cipants will dig into grappling ques ons that may not have a "right" answer, but will explore what the Bible has to say.  Our theme topic, “How can we be fully faithful when we are fully flawed?” is the provoca ve conversa on about the hu‐man condi on based on 1‐2 Samuel, 1 Chronicles and Psalms. Some ques ons are, “Is it okay to complain to God in prayer?”, “What’s my story in God’s eyes?”, and “What is God’s role in war & poli cs?”, "Why does God appear so violent at  mes?", and "What does it mean that God looks at the heart?" (Par cipant’s guide‐ $6)   Chris anity’s Family Tree (September 15‐ November 3, room 202) In these video presenta ons, United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton presents inspiring vision of eight Chris an denomina ons and faith tradi ons. Comparing the Chris an family to our own extended families, he contends that each denomina on has a unique, valuable perspec ve to offer on the Chris an faith. For each group, he gives a brief history, outlines major beliefs, and describes some things we can learn from that tradi on to strengthen our own Chris an faith. The denomina ons and faith tradi‐ons include Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Bap sts, Pentecostalism, Methodism. 

(Par cipant’s guide‐ $10)  Confident Paren ng – Be the Parent Your Family Needs (September 15‐ October 20)  Somewhere in the busyness of life we have good inten ons, but daily frustra ons and ongoing struggles might be evidence that we were be er trained to drive a car or pursue a career than raise children. We will be addressing key issues that form tools for successful paren ng. We want to equip you to become a more confident par‐ent. There will be laughter (Deb’s teaching),  mes of working through frustra ons and camaraderie from folks in the same boat as you. Words such as love, logic, authen c, insigh ul, prayer, pa ent, connected, comfor ng and celebratory are some of the things we will be looking at together.

Beginnings: An Introduc on to the Chris an Faith (September 16 ‐ November 11, library) 

This study introduces the basic themes and ques ons that most Chris ans have such as – “ So, is this all there is?”, “What happens when I die?”, “If I don’t feel lost, why do I need to be found?”, “Who is Jesus and what did He do?’, and “Can I start over?”.  It is intended for adults exploring and seeking a walk with God and it encourages a personal rela onship with Jesus.  In each session, par cipants will watch a short DVD segment, study Scripture, explore Chris an faith and teachings, and experience the small group se ng. (Par cipant’s guide ‐ $7) 

Experiencing God  (September 16 ‐ December 8, excluding Thanksgiving eve, parlor)                                     

Experiencing God challenges Chris ans to experience the fullness of a life lived in a fellowship with the loving, personal God.  This powerful in‐depth study shows how to deepen your own rela onship with God and discover your special place in His kingdom.  The structure of the study is centered on the “Seven Reali es of Experiencing God” which uses scripture as the source of authority for faith and prac ce.  More than a million Chris ans have embraced this study and many claim it to be life‐changing. (Par cipant’s workbook ‐$18)

SUNDAY CLASS       11AM ‐ 12:30PM Invita on to John: A short‐term Disciple Bible study (September 13‐ December 6, excluding Thanksgiving eve, library)  The Bible has four Gospel accounts of the life, ministry, death and resurrec on of Jesus.   Three of these Gospels are very similar to each other in both what they tell about the story of Jesus and how they tell it. However, the Gospel of John stands apart. In it, we find Jesus speaking not in parables but in lengthy discourses. We overhear Jesus talking with Nicodemus and Mary Magdalene. We marvel at Jesus calling Lazarus from the tomb and washing his disciples' feet.  We linger over Jesus' great promises: "For God so loved the world..."I am the bread of life..."  TOY WORKSHOP COLLECTION  starts on November 1st.   

WORKSHOP DATES: (a er Thanksgiving)  Friday and Saturday, Nov 27 & 28;, the week of Nov.30 to Dec 5  

NEEDED: someone/group to coordinate MAKING THE GIFT BASKETS during the workshop.  Items will be sorted before the workshop.  

NEEDED: someone/group to clean and dress BARBIE dolls.  This is easier done at home if you can.  You can start as soon as dolls come in for the collec on.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED – Friday, August 28 ‐ We are looking for volunteers to host members of a French boys’ choir (Les Pe ts Chanteurs de France) on Friday, August 28 for one night.  The group will be performing here at BAUMC that night (Save That Date!).  There are 22 boys and 4 adults who need accommoda ons.  The boys are usually hosted in pairs; however, if possible, please consider hos ng up to 4 boys.  If no single beds are available, two children can sleep in the same double or queen bed. 

The group will be arriving at the church on Friday, August 28.  We will feed them at 6pm, a er their rehearsal, and prior to their concert performance at 7 pm.  Host families will a end the concert and take the boys home a erward (8:30pm).  Families will return the boys to church on Saturday morning, August 29, by 8:30/9 am.

 The French Boys’ Choir “Les Pe ts Chanteurs de France”, will perform a concert on  August 28th at 7pm at Bel Air United Methodist Church in the Sanctuary.  The choir is composed of 22 young boys and teenagers, from 7 to 17 years old.  The French Boy’s Choir is the worthy heir of the secular tradi on of children vocal prac cing which blends self‐development and reliability of a structured pedagogy, as are Vienna Boys Singers, Oxford New College ...  The musical repertoire of Les Pe ts Chanteuers de France is very eclec cal and offers to the audience a perpetual trip through the well‐known classical master‐pieces:  Ave Maria Caccini, Ave Verum Mozart, I will sing with the Spirit J Ru er …  Their concerts’ second part is an invita on to travel through folk song, from Broadway to Paris Musical Hall, through the wonderful landscapes of France and America, with songs from Charles TRENET, Richard ROGERS, Disney’s song and a lot of surprises during the audience :  O Danny Boy, America the Beau ful …  During the intermission, some of the boys will sell CDs.
