John Watson - Bio
John Watson commenced working in the investment management industry in 1987 as an equities
analyst with NRMA Investments. John progressed through a series of portfolio management and
investment director positions with major investment management firms both in Australia and
internationally. From 1996 to 2000 John increased State Street Global Advisor’s Active Australian
equity capability from $20M to over $500M with consistent top quartile investment performance,
securing buy ratings from major research houses and asset consulting firms. In 2000 John was
appointed Investment Director and Asian Regional Investment Strategist for Invesco Asia Limited
where John managed USD3.7B of funds for US state pension funds and European multi-national
firms. In 2002 John was appointed head of equity research for the Australian-based stockbroking
firm, Lonsec where he developed individually managed accounts and model portfolios for their clients
that attracted $250Million within 12 months and delivered 10%p.a. benchmark out-performance. In
2003 John joined the Challenger Financial Services investment management team as a portfolio
manager for a specialist financials sector investment fund that achieved significant outperformance.
Having a strong commitment to being a life-long learner, in 2005 John completed a post-graduate
diploma in education to add to the Master of Applied Finance and Bachelor of Economics degrees
previously completed. John was awarded the Macquarie University academic prize for Securities
Industry Law in 1996. John worked as a business teacher for several years training the future
generation of business leaders.
In 2010 John founded Margate Financial Research Solutions that provides consulting services to
investment management and financial market firms as well as independent fund reviews of
investments. Margate Financial Research Solution specialises in a core and satellite approach; seeking
to add value by identifying best of breed funds in under-researched sectors where there is scope for
value to be added for clients and then focusing on exchange traded funds, which are a far cheaper,
passive approach for well-researched traditional sectors, such as large cap equities, where fund
managers are not adding value. John is also contributing columnist and researcher for
BankingDay.com where he provides research and commentary on bank capital comparisons and the
implementation of Basel 111. In 2014 John was commissioned by Morgij Analytics to prepare major
submissions to the Australian Treasurer’s Financial System Inquiry that included an analysis of the

international capital comparison claims of major Australian banks and also quantified the implicit and
explicit tax-payer funded subsidies to the major banks. John also conducts market size research and
analysis for initial public offerings of investment management firms.
