Recently a member on National MG Meet, South Australian needed an ambulance in
country Victoria. The account was $1732,.which was covered by Tasmanian Ambulance
Board... Had we been in either South Australia it would not have been covered.. Anyone
travelling to these two states, South Australia & Queensland, need to take out travel
insurance which includes ambulance cover. Most private health insurers do not cover for
ambulance...

Presidents Report
As you may be aware of by now the clubs elected President, Eamonn Matthews resigned
from the position in February this year, as I was elected to the Vice Presidents position it
was up to me to take on the role of President until the next AGM when a new President
can be elected.
At the time of the resignation I was on extended leave travelling on the main land and as a
result Bronwyn Zuber took on the role until my return on the 10th of May. I would like to
thank her for taking on the job at short notice and keeping the wheels of the Club rolling.

Cover Story
The CAMS Club Challenge Australia
Saturday 3rd
June at Baskerville Raceway
Part of the 2.01 km circuit was used for the Club Challenge Australia, ( turns 10 through to
7, this is basically down the straight in front of the timing tower through the esses and up
the hill)
Clubs enter teams of up to five cars in different classes, racing against times set in the
classes, the best of which is divided by the record and multiplied to give a percentage. The
percentage for each member is added then divided by the number in each team, with a
team overall percentage giving a result. The winner being the team with the lowest
percentage on the day, after the six runs.
Somewhere in that lot is a great day at the Baskerville track, with a broad selection of cars
making up the classes competing on the much improved surface, some of us for the first
time since the upgrade.
The MG Car Club had three teams entered, namely, MG Car Club of Tasmania, Team
Kimber and JAP Stuff. All three teams enjoyed the well organised day with creditable
performances to build on for the future, unfortunately the prize money for the clubs went
elsewhere this time, that being so, competing in the event on the day was a good
experience in its self.
The photos are kindly made available by ANGRYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY & DESIGN.

2018 National Meeting March March 30th
– April 2nd
2018
The planning for next year’s National Meeting is now in full swing, the committee has
locked in all the venues, the caterers and the major infrastructure items that are required to
make the weekend happen.
Individual working committees are now putting their head together to work out all the
small details, this requires ideas, time and effort to locate providers get prices and critique
offers. So if there are any members who would like to help and have a bit of free time,
your assistance would be most valuable to us.
Likewise as Easter approaches next year we will need hands on deck, we would really
appreciate your assistance before and during the meeting, so if you are able to assist in any
way, please let me know by phoning 0458 949 881 or by email natmeet-
[email protected] so I can record your interest and this will assist with our planning and
execution of the National Meeting.
If you want to keep up with what is happening please take the time to visit our website via
the link on the club website. We are currently accepting expressions of interest for next
year, this will put you on an email list so any new information will be circulated to you via
email before it is posted on the website.
The Devonport Car Show is being held next year on Sunday March 25th
, this is the Sunday
just prior to the National Meeting. The Devonport Rotary Club have been made aware of
our National Meeting and have offered to make the feature marque at next years event the
MG. This will present us with a great opportunity to promote the National Meeting, even
though we do not charge public entry to any events it is great to see the public at
concourse admiring the cars. So please consider pencilling in that Sunday to come to
Devonport, show off your car, stay the week and assist the organising committee get setup
as many hands make light work.
Accommodation in and around Ulverstone is being snapped up, if any members are
considering attending the National Meeting, you may consider staying with local
members, we all have spare rooms, and our rates are very reasonable.
On a final note, history will show that the host club members are some of the last to
register for the National Meeting, we implore you to think and plan now about attending
next year and when registrations open please do not leave to the last minute. Many of our
northern visitors have already locked in Spirit bookings and accommodation bookings. So
if we get to the cut off number, it will most likely be those who hesitate because they don’t
have to, that will miss out.
We are also looking for sponsors for the National Meeting, if you have or know of a
company that would like to put their name to the event and help us to relieve some cost
imposts on registration, this would be greatly appreciated. Please contact our treasurer
Mark on 0408 271 029 or [email protected]

Club Captains Report
Past competition events included our combined club day at Baskerville. This was held in
conjunction with the Mini Club. The entry list wasn’t as large as expected but those that
did turn up had a lot of fun on the new surface. I didn’t compete but was able to assist with
officiating.
At the end of May, it was the Club’s turn to run the TSS event at Symmons Plains. Damp,
dark and cold weather the day before and it looked the same on the Sunday very early.
However, the practise runs and the 1st race were damp with the rest of the events in sunny
and dry conditions. A brief shower during the last race and all competitors behaved
themselves. An excellent days motorsport! A few members travelled and lent a hand as
officials in varying roles. Thanks to all who participated and to those who organised or
volunteered. A very welcoming BBQ at the conclusion of the day was the perfect way to
wind down before our trip home.
June 3rd
at Baskerville and the scene is set for a CAMS organised multi club hillclimb. The
Light Car club ran the event with the CMI providing the timing gear. 30 second intervals
meant that the action was non-stop. The MG Car club had 3 teams entered - team MG,
team Japanese and team specials. Different cars in different classes with the object of the
day to post your best time out of 6 runs divided by the record time for your class and
multiplied by 100 to give a percentage. For example, my time of 47 secs divided by record
time of 38.5 seconds and multiplied by 100 to give 122%. Each members time percentage
was added together and averaged to give the team percentage. We didn’t win but we had a
lot of fun. Thanks go to Robin & Zube for organising the day for our members and of
course CAMS, the LCC Tas and CMI.
Our next competition events are the Motorkhanas at Latrobe on July 2 and August 13.
These will be State rounds of the Motorkhana series and will be hotly contested. Come
along and be part of a fun day in motorsport in a safe environment. You never know but
one or some of the patterns will/could be in use at next years Nat Meet. A bonus for the
July 2 event will be electronic timing provided by the Victorians. This will be a training
and info day as they have volunteered their equipment for the National Meeting next year.
‘till next time

Club Meeting Details Every Tuesday Night at 8pm
Civic Club, 134 Davey Street, Hobart
Postal Address GPO Box 5, Hobart, Tas 7001
PAST EVENTS:
23rd
April – An overcast day greeted MG Car Club members at the Civic Club at 10
o’clock. With 4 MGF’s, 3 MGB’s, 2 MGA’s, 2 Mercs., 1 Mustang and an MX5. A lot of
members admired Greg Ellis’s new MGA top, a perfect copy of his original top, while
others looked at Di Leeson’s immaculate blue and Paula Goninon’s immaculate silver
convertible Mercedes Benz’s.
Leaving at 10.25 our first stop was the Lauderdale Bakery for a delightful coffee and
meeting the owner, Darren Winter, the Lauderdale Football Club coach. The 3rd
card was
dealt at the Police Academy Skid Pan with some members seeing it for the first time.
MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, June 2017
Page 11
For the next stop and 4th
card it was on to the Bellerive Bluff and the heavy gun battery
which defended Hobart Town from the Russians in the late 1850’s.
From there we drove 200 metres to our destination, the Bellerive Fish Bar, for lunch where
we sat down and enjoyed large portions of fish and chips. The hands that were
accumulated along the way were then revealed with Brian Sharman thinking he was a
good chance with three 7’s but was pipped at the post by Peter Shaw who took home the
pot of money with a flush. An enjoyable meal was had with some members saying it was
too much to eat, leaving a lot of chips on the plate. With a lot of chit-chat over by 2 pm we
made our way home with our bellies full.

30th
April – Bothwell Motorkhana. The weather was cool and a blanket of fog wavered
over Bothwell. By the time the event got underway it was a glorious autumn day with
bright sunshine with no wind and the ground was dust free, but a bit slippery on the dry
grass.
The first event was Oh What a Feeling, the second Crossed Four Points, the third Top Hat,
the fourth Pentagon and the last event was Double Hat. With only 6 entrants it was all over
by 12 o’clock and the winner of the Motorkhana in the green Mini was Tony Sutcliffe.
A big thankyou to Marcus Hart from the Mini Car Club who brought the portaloo and
provided the catering and drinks. Also thanks to Garry Rusden, our starter, Bronwyn
Zuber on the computer and Robin Wilmot who organized flags for the layout of the
events. With a BBQ and a couple of drinks for lunch we all went our own ways back
home.

Page 12
First to arrive at departure point, Civic Club, was Jan and Richard Holtsbaum in their
MGF M2, next was Shane Manley in his MGF M2, then would you believe Peter and
Beth Bradford in their MGF. A well maintained Jaguar mark 5 of Greg and Carol Ellis,
Bob and Di Leeson in their magnificent Mercedes 230SLK with the most remarkable
button which takes roof raising to another level. If you think that 3 MGF's in the same car
park is amazing, how do you think the crowd of MGF owners felt when they were joined
by a 4th MGF. Yes a beautiful red 97 model with hard top owned by Graham and Freya
Broomhall. So cars were re arranged for a photo op.
We had to get our act together because we were due to join up with Barry and Margaret
Cooper who met us at Sorell in their Austin Healey 3000 mark 3. The motorcade
proceeded to Buckland for coffee and a show of cars on the grass bank.
Next stop Triabunna where David Scott joined us in his very precious MGB and Phil and
Sue Rowlands in another vehicle designed for other uses and then on to the Bark Mill
Tavern for lunch. Big serves of really well prepared food with little waiting time.
We certainly brightened up the car park. A good day enjoyed by all.
Richard Holtsbaum.

Wayne Goninon’s Mid-week run. 35 people in 20 cars ventured out from the C3 Café in
South Hobart. The google bumps were ironed out by our intrepid leader, “Gurks”.
Although it was a cool day about 13 degrees, Alan was the only one who opted for tops
down in his immaculate MGTC (not sure if Trish was too impressed! We travelled to the
South Arm RSL via Cambridge, Acton, Rife Range Road and Gellibrand Drive.
On arrival the staff was well prepared for us with 3 large tables set and very efficient
service. We were offered multiple choices of mains and desserts and it was difficult to
decide which ones to choose.
These were served quickly and efficiently. From all accounts all choices were delicious
and the service could not be faulted. Overall a great day and a fantastic array of cars as
depicted on the photo.

PAST EVENTS:
Sunday 21st May run to the Pier at Georgetown.
We had 15 starters for a fine run along the West Tamar wine route crossing the Tamar via
the Batman Bridge and on to Georgetown.
To make the journey interesting we had a list of wineries in the area and we were to list
those that were sign posted along the route to Georgetown and for the winner a bottle of
the wineries product.
They had a list of as many wineries in the area but only 9 were listed along the route and
some of the questions with answers are listed below.
Place Name Answer Listed Wineries
ISEMLEI IEWNS Elmslie wines
ELOV IEWNS Velo Wines
AATMR IGRDE Tamar Ridge
AINTVE ONPIT IEWNS Native Point Wines
The part that concerned me was the number that got all 13 correct and some had all listed
before we even left the car park.
After a lovely run to Georgetown we arrived at the Pier Hotel and settled in for a nice
lunch.

Discussions being held over lunch R to L. Ian and Annie Saunders, Graeme Springer and
Terry Sansom
L to R. Tony King, Angela Dilger, Peter and Liz Harper.
We had a number with all wineries correct but as is the usual case the judge (me)
deliberated over the entries and Ian and Annie Saunders’s entry was deemed the winner
MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, June 2017
Page 19
Ian and Annie Saunders
However the judges were presented with a dilemma in that Tony and Mary King had
completed their entry as instructed, only listing sign posted wineries.
However they had one incorrectly listed so were deemed the second place getter and were
also awarded a bottle of wine.
Tony and Mary King
A very enjoyable drive with a quiz to add a little difference to the journey, the weather
remained fine so what more can you asks.

A short note re a Northern run
We were fortunate to strike a beautiful sunny morning on May 26th and 5 couples headed
down the Tamar via Rosevears and Grindelwald for a short drive before arriving at Emslie
for coffee and morning tea.
Only one MG had the hood down - but there was a concession- the heating was turned on
(no prizes for guessing who!)
As always good company, good conversation and good, MG'ing.

Editors Notes
Thank you once again to the magazine contributors. Apologies to the participants in the
teams of the CAMS club challenge who did not get a picture on or inside the cover, the
pictures were provided by Angryman Photography and CAMS Website, while trying to be
representative matching cars to numbers became difficult, if anyone was not busy
competing and has pictures, they will fit in somewhere?

First aid kits and defibulators have now been made available to each of the three sub-
centres. Would the co-ordinators of each run make sure this equipment is available should
it be required during a club run.
SQUARE RIGGER NOTES
All Pre War, T and Y Type MG’s.
Here’s a theme for this month with strong connection to Tasmania from the recent Historic Winton.
The first to jump out, the very recognisable Ford Prefect Special built mid 50s by Mick Watt shown
here in full red livery, number 95 having been in Victoria for many years. It is understood this owner
also has other Tasmanian historic racers. Also shown at Baskerville late 50s when in the hands of
Ralph King highlighting that stand-out snout in company with the handsome Elliot Holden Special.
The background of period photos quite often a good reference of the day.
One of a few is the bronze coloured Bruderlin and Thomas TC Special number 123 of Bob Boast
from Victoria competing widely at historic events for many years. This TC is twin to the special
brought to Tasmania and campaigned with great success by Brian Bowe shown around 1961 on the
Trevallyn Hill. Four of these TC Specials were built by B&T late 50s, two were apparently scrapped
before decades end. These two are the survivors although the present whereabouts of the Bowe car is
unknown.
