“Earthquake Awareness for the Adjuster” at October MVCABy Lynna Harrison

The October 17th Luncheon Meeting of the Mid Valley Claims Association drew a large crowd to hear Sean Hallet, PE of Uni-fied Investigations & Sciences, Inc. speak about Earthquake awareness. Mr. Hallet has over thirty years experience in Civil and Structural Engineering. He warmed up the crowd with a very funny joke before diving into the gravity of the topic of the day.Sean said none of us know really what to expect prior to an earthquake and, because you as an adjuster are more than likely to be the lifeline to property owners in the event of a disaster, you need to know how to prepare. He proceeded to list ways in which industry professionals can be more prepared. Make yourself aware that some or all services may be disrupted: roads impassible; electrical service outages; defective gas lines; sewer and water sources affected; runways at airports; food service; Emergency Hospitals over-loaded; Lodging scarcities for displaced persons. Anticipate that wireless communication will likely be overloaded, he

suggested. He also advised that if you are able to travel to the loss you may not be able to enter due to safety factors and, if not safe, STAY OUT. Make sure gas is turned off Contact an engineer for any tech-nical needs. You can check the website before going out to see the severity of damage in the region and what to expect.www.earthquake.usgs.gov/research/pager/You can then prioritize who needs the most help.MVCA President Deena Lucero thanked Sean for a most in-formative presentation. The 50/50 Raffle Drawing was won by Karla Jones of Ron Hall & Associates, $35; and Mark Gonsalves, of Wingard Construction won the $15 prize. Please join us on November 21st for the next Mid Valley Claims Luncheon Meeting.

To start, please let me (or any member of the MVCA Board) know immediately if you are nominating anyone to be considered as Board Member for the MVCA 2015 Board.

I would like to thank October’s speaker, Sean K. Hallet

(Forensic Engineering Consultant) with Unified Investigations Sciences, Inc. Mr. Hallet discussed “Earthquake Awareness for the Adjuster.” It was a groundbreaking topic so say in the least.

This month, November 21st, I would like to welcome another exciting speaker who has the ability to shake, rattle and roll our upcoming luncheon. Mr. Michael Brown, CPCU, CCRA, Property Department Manager for Golden Bear, will be discussing earthquakes again this month, since it is such a hot topic and not everyone was able to attend our last earthquake presentation. Mr. Brown’s presentation is titled, “A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On: California Earthquakes and You.”

Holidays are almost here... Already!!!November Message from MVCA President Deena Lucero

2014 Mid-Valley Claims Association PresidentFrontier Adjusters (209) 478-1422 • cell (209) 603-5006 [email protected]

Deena Lucero

This presentation will be approaching the same general topic, but from a different perspective.

Following this Friday, our last meeting of the year will be our Holiday luncheon, on December 19th. We would like to continue, if possible, with our recent program “MVCA Heroes”, since this has been enjoyed by all for the past couple of years. Please let me (or any member of the MVCA Board) know if you, or anyone you know, would honor us by speaking this year about something wonderful that you, or another member, has done for the community. We welcome back our past Heroes to let us know what exciting things have happened to their particular causes this past year.

Looking forward to seeing you all on November 21stJ

RANDY AGNETTI RETURNS TO RESURRECT PIPE PROS Former long-time EBCA advocate and past-president, Randy Agnetti, is back! After invest-ing years building his successful Concord-based leak detection business, Pipe Pros, Inc., Randy sold the business several years ago, and moved back to his home state of Florida. As that deal ultimately fell apart, Randy decided to reboot his California business, effectively starting over, twenty years after he first founded it in 1994.As Owner and President of Pipe Pros, Inc., Randy was very active in the East Bay Adjusters Asso-

ciation, and the Mt. Diablo Property Association through most of the ‘90s. In fact, he was at the forefront of the movement that ultimately merged those two organizations back into one, in 2001. A veteran of the industry, Randy explained to us how he got involved. “I started as a plumber, and realized that what the industry needed was a no-conflict-of-interest reporting service to provide professional and accurate causation services to customers dealing with plumbing leaks,” he said.“I have 30 years in the plumbing industry. I served as president of the East Bay Claims Association for four years during which time the membership doubled,” he added. “Further, I was on the Board of Directors for the Underground Utility and Leak Locators Association (UULLA) for nine years, and on the Board for the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC).”Pipe Pros provides the latest in video inspection, leak detection, utility location, ground penetrating radar services, and smoke and odor detection wherever needed throughout Northern California. Randy worked smart, and he worked hard, to build up Pipe Pros back in the day. “My biggest accomplishment has been the building of Pipe Pros from a one truck operation to a six vehicle fleet with eight employees and sales that grew 25% per year,” he shared. “I am looking forward to re-starting Pipe Pros after a five year absence. I expect to make it bigger and better than it was before. “In his "spare" time, Randy lives his passion. “I love umpiring baseball games, for a variety of leagues,” he stated with his infectious grin. “I was recently selected as an umpire for the Roy Hobbs World Series to be held later this month in Ft. Myers, FL”Randy Agnetti, owner/president of Pipe Pros, Inc., maybe be reached at: (925) 969-9182, or [email protected].

Understanding your risks and mitigation needs offers the best protection

Californians Urged to Prepare Before The Next Big One Hits

More than 10 million Californians participated in the largest disaster preparedness event ever October 16th, when they practiced “The Great ShakeOut” drop, cover and hold-on drill. Insurance Com-missioner Dave Jones reminded Californians to prepare before the next earthquake hits with a few simple steps that can save your life and help you recover from disaster."You have the opportunity to prepare for the next disaster today, and make recovering easier," said Commissioner Jones. "In observance of the Great ShakeOut I urge all Californians to make a preparedness plan and practice it. Before the next big one hits, make sure you take a few simple steps to mitigate your risk of injury and loss."Californians know it's not if but when the next earthquake will hit. Even a small or moderate temblor can cause significant damage. The magnitude 6.0 quake that struck Napa on August 24 is a good reminder that residents need to take steps to protect themselves, their loved ones and their belongings by making sure they have the cover-age they need and they take simple, inexpensive mitigation steps.Standard homeowners insurance does not provide coverage for earth-quake damage. Earthquake insurance must be purchased separately and is typically designed as a catastrophic policy to cover tens of thousands of dollars in structural damage. The majority of quakes are moderate and cause damage and injury when furniture and belongings tumble and break. For about $100, the average person can protect themselves and their family by using Velcro appliance and furniture straps, cabinet latches and quake putty to secure those items that fall and break during a quake.Adding an earthquake strap to a flat screen TV helps prevent injuries from the appliance falling on small children and has the added benefit serving as a theft deterrent.
