Mid-year Break We wish all students, staff and family members a well-deserved mid-year break after a very successful first half of the year in all facets of College life. After taking long service leave during first semester, Mrs Di Bridge, College Psychologist, has decided to conclude her time at the College. We express our appreciation to Mrs Bridge for her excellent and caring service to the College community, and her service to Catholic Education in general. We farewell and thank Mrs Narelle Cochran who has been with us this semester teaching in place of Mrs Nicole Pearce, whilst she has been on leave this term. We extend our best wishes to Mrs Janet Flematti and Mrs Faye Ratajczak who will enjoy long service leave in Term 3. Term 3 Commencement Students will return to school to commence Term 3 on Wednesday, 24th July. Teachers will recommence on Monday, 22nd July with two days of personal and professional development. College Office Opening Times The College Office opening times during the semester break will be: Monday, 8th July-Friday, 20th July 9.00am-3.00pm Monday, 22nd July Closed Tuesday, 23rd July 10.00am-4.00pm Normal office opening times, 8.00am-4.00pm, will resume on Wednesday, 24th July.

Year 10 Reflection Day On Wednesday, 26th June, we had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Year 10 Reflection Day. The Reflection Day continued to develop the leadership and teambuilding skills we learnt from Year 9 in our Camino classes. The word camino originates from the Spanish language and translates to ‘walk’ or ‘journey.’ The Reflection Day was centred around the idea of furthering our ‘walk’ or ‘journey’ into adulthood.

Parish Weekend Mass Times Clarkson Parish St Andrew’s Catholic Church Parish Priest. Fr. Dariusz Basiaga Tel. 9407 7512 Email. [email protected] Saturday 8.00am, 6.00pm (Vigil). Sunday 7.30am, 9.00am, 5.30pm.

Yanchep & Lancelin Pastoral Area Parish Priest. Fr. Augustine Puthota. Tel. 9561 2172 Saturday 6.00pm (Vigil) at Yanchep Community Centre. Sunday 8.00am Guilderton Community Hall. Sunday 9.45am, 33 Gingin Road, Lancelin.

The day began with a brisk walk to True North Church with our Camino groups. We spent time with friends and teachers from our Year 9 Camino class. Once we were at the venue, we were extremely fortunate to listen to an inspirational talk by Robert Pike. At the age of seventeen, Robert lost both of his legs and also three of his closest friends, in an horrific car accident. Robert struggled with the fact that he survived, wishing that he had died in the accident too, or that if he could substitute his life for one of the others, he would’ve done that. The accident has not stopped him from achieving his dreams. Robert has played wheelchair basketball for FC Barcelona and works in a successful business called Equipe Industries. Robert wanted us to realise the impact of good and bad decisions. He encouraged us to make smart and wise choices that would benefit us. By choosing to do what is wise, we can eliminate many possible risks. During the day we were separated into our original Camino groups for group activities. One of the activities was to write each other’s strengths onto our own personalised rock. During the Year 10 liturgy, we placed the rocks inside a circle in the center of the stage, to emphasise how a single rock cannot do anything alone, but once other rocks surround it, shapes can be created to build something extraordinary.

After lunch, Father Israel spoke to us about the importance of making an impact in people’s lives, by making small contributions every day. This was a very moving and effective speech, teaching us to contribute to society in order to fulfil and satisfy our purpose on earth. We had a positive experience on the Reflection Day. We enjoyed the educational lessons from Mr Pike and Father Israel, as well as the team building exercises. Thank you to Mr Bright, Ms Christie, Mrs Pearce and the Year 10 Care Teachers for organising a fantastic day. Kirsty Carmichael & Emelie Mathew Year 10 Students

Recital Night

On Thursday, 27th June, the Music Department hosted ther formal music night of the year, Recital Night. The night was a fantastic success with a variety of styles and genres being played at a high standard. Throughout the night, students from the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Music class performed solos on their chosen instrument which they recently played in their ATAR exams.

Each of these students had the audience captivated and should be very proud of their performances. Congratulations to Harrison Cook, Jac Donnelly, Alex Hardy and Julia Vrlic. Senior students were also able to showcase their song writing on stage. Year 12 student, Caleb Whiting performed an original composition, Exposure, which he had written during this term. Year 12 student, Katelyn Boorer, also arranged the music for two pieces, for Wind Ensemble and Wind Quartet. The intermission featured Year 8-10 Specialist Music students performing solo pieces. Performances by Sophia Abad (Year 10), Ciara Mack (Year 8) and Addison Squire (Year 8) were a delight to listen to. Thank you to staff who assisted on the night, and to the many family and friends who supported our students.

Year 10 Commerce and Law - Just Start IT Final Pitches

The first semester of the Year 10 Commerce & Law elective is based on the Just Start IT Program, that teaches students (streamed into teams made up of hackers/tech lovers; hawkers/business lovers; and hipsters/creatives) how to build and take to market their own tech start up. After a very productive semester with groups working on their start-ups, on Tuesday, 25th June, the teams presented their final pitches to Steve and Kath from Just Start IT,Mr Billingsley, Deputy Principal and Mrs Pearce, Assistant Deputy Principal Year 10. The class is to be commended on their great efforts on the projects this semester, with special mention of two teams: BTS: Samuel Archibald, Dylan Clements and Jayden Hill. Swift: Ben Baxter, Harrison Hewling, Lado Laki Wani, Ben Uncanin and Dan Wessling.

These two teams were selected to present in front of a panel of judges at Newman Siena Centre, Doubleview on Sunday, 30th June and wowed everyone in attendance with their engaging pitches. They are to be congratulated on their achievements. Mrs Mery Jones History and Social Sciences Teacher

Wheelchairs For Kids

Four fortunate students from 10EB Care Group, were given the opportunity to spend last Friday morning at the WFK headquarters in Wangara. They assisted Brother Olly and the numerous volunteers by contributing towards the construction of several wheelchairs destined for the Philippines, which on arrival will help restore some mobility and dignity to physically impaired young children. Morning tea gave the students a chance to chat with the volunteers who clearly appreciate the input that the College provides to the organisation. Our students were deeply moved by the work taking place at the warehouse facility and they all expressed a genuine desire to offer their services in the future. Their tasks were varied - Ollie (no relation) drilled and assembled the braking mechanism for the chairs, Kya constructed the headrests for the chairs, while Robyn and Skylar prepared the gifts/toys/blanket packs which are included with each chair. All four students took turns at creating the main frame of the wheelchairs, before assembling and packaging one of the chairs which will head to Asia next month.

Mulching the Gardens at St Andrew’s Church

On Irene McCormack Day earlier this term, several Irene’s Service Learning activities were organised, one of which was spreading mulch over the gardens around St Andrew’s Church.

An hour was never going to be enough to distribute over $1,000 worth of mulch, and our hardworking senior students barely scratched the surface. On Monday afternoon this week, under the guidance of Mr Bastow, a number of enthusiastic Year 10 students returned to the church to complete the project. The group worked tirelessly for two hours to finalise this valuable community service activity, returning to the College exhausted. Congratulations to the sixteen students involved and many thanks to Mr Bastow for his considerable input on the day. Mr Tony Summers Science Teacher

Year 11 Politics and Law This week, the Electoral Commission of WA paid a visit to the Year 11 Politics and Law class, to teach them how to vote. The practical, hands-on lesson was invaluable for students and their understanding of electoral processes, something that will be a reality for them in the not so distant future. Mr Kieran Parkes Politics & Law and English Teacher

Year 7 Archaeology Incursion

During this last week of term, Year 7 students have had the opportunity to uncover secrets of the past in their Social Science classes.

Archaeology is the study of the past through finding and investigating artefacts. Archaeologists from Archae-Aus visited Year 7 classes giving students boxes with artefacts uncovered from sites in Western Australia. Our Year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed uncovering the artefacts and studying them in class, and gaining a wonderful insight into the history of Western Australia. Students now have a clear understanding of how historians gain information through primary sources, which will assist them with their assessment on this topic next term.

Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Sciences

Year 12 Students Complete Nationally Recognised Barista Certificate

On Monday, 24th June, students from the Year 12 Community Services and Food Science & Technology classes travelled to the Coffee School in Perth where we undertook courses of Hygienic Practices for Food Safety, and also Prepare and Serve Espresso Coffee. While on the course, students learnt the correct methods of frothing and the technique of pouring the milk, making the perfect espresso and how to efficiently clean the coffee machine after use. After making more coffees than we could count, everyone was successful in achieving their Barista Certificate. Obtaining a Barista Certificate will enable us to apply for hospitality jobs in cafes and restaurants. We are grateful for the experiences given to our class. Holly Murray and Kimberley Russell Year 12 Students

Year 11 General Outdoor Education The Year 11 General Outdoor Education class had their first multi-day expedition during Week 9 of this term. The students spent four days applying their skills in lead climbing, mountain biking and camping, which they have been learning throughout this term. Students began their expedition at City Summit Climbing Gym where they completed various walls by doing lead climbing. From there students travelled down to Dwellingup where they spent three days cycling along the Munda Biddi Trail.

The goals for the camp were for students to be assessed and work towards achieving their unit of competencies in mountain biking, climbing and camping skills for their Cert II in Outdoor Recreation. Students were given their first opportunity to implement the skills they have been learning in the course, including leadership, route planning, navigation, menu planning, Leave No Trace and interpersonal skills. A few highlights included riding the Marrinup and Turner Hill Trails, which are premier mountain biking tracks.

Students also rode the Murray Valley Down Hill Trails which were exhilarating with multiple berms, rollers and jumps. Students completed the green and blue runs with huge smiles on their faces and a few squeals. A huge thank you to Miss Billam and Mr Gullen who assisted with the camp. The next challenge will see students completing a six-day expedition on the Cape to Cape Track in the Cape Leeuwin National Park, where they will hike, rock climb, abseil and cave, in some of the most pristine forest and coastline the south-west has to offer.

Publication of Information Relating to Schools Each year all schools are required to publish information relating to their school performance. This report is included in the 2018 College Report, following the Board Chair’s Report, and is available on the College website at

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) August 2019 Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

• Year of schooling. • Category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional. • Level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice,

supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to: • Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in

schools. • Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools. • Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs, in order to improve

educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The data is collected each year in August. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy Further information about the NCCD can be found at https://www.nccd.edu.au/ and fact sheet https://www.nccd.edu.au/sites/default/files/fact%20sheet%20for%20parents%20guardians%20and%20carers.pdf If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact me at the College. Football Academy Congratulations Year 7 Girls – ACC Champions As the Semester One season comes to an end, the Football Academy has recorded some fantastic results across both Carnivals, and Home and Away fixtures. Below is a run-down of their achievements this Semester. Year 7 Girls competed well at the West Perth 7/8 Girls Carnival held in Term 1, coming away with a win in their last game.

More recently, the girls won the ACC Year 7 South Metro Carnival, after comfortably winning all their games. They went on to the Grand Final Carnival on Tuesday, 2nd July and once again won all their games, becoming the 2019 ACC Freo Dockers Cup Premiership Team.

Year 7 Boys competed well at the ACC Year 7 South Metro Carnival, coming third out of five teams and also finished third in their CAS season, just missing out on finals on points difference. Year 8/9 Boys recorded wins in the West Perth division and CAS division, our B Team finishing fourth in West Perth and third in CAS. The Year 8 Boys also played well whilst away at camp in Kalgoorlie. Year 8 Girls finished third at the West Perth Carnival and won both their games whilst on camp in Kalgoorlie.

Year 9/10 Girls won all but one game at the West Perth Carnival and finished third. The girls then joined our Year 11 and 12 Girls to play in the White Division home and away games, finishing second after winning three games by over ten goals. Unfortunately, their one loss relegated them to second spot on percentage.

Senior Boys Team had the best season since the Football Academy started five years ago, making it to the quarter-final stage, after beating the Subiaco champion school, Carine SHS, in a qualifying final, only to lose the next week. Looking ahead, our Year 7-9 Girls commence their home and away season in Week 2, and our Year 10 Boys and Girls Academies play in the ACC Carnivals on Wednesday, 7th August. Mr Ken Dillon Football Academy Coordinator
