Fire smoke alarms (considered important by 83% of Americans) and fi re safety generally (82%) are among the top three most important features in a new home, beaten only by a low crime rate in the area (84%). Home Fire sprinklers are considered an important feature in a new home by nearly half (48%), and essenti al to a fi ft h of Americans (18%). Millennials are more likely to think of them as im-portant with over half (55%) of millennials saying they are important and a quarter (24%) believing them to be essenti al. Looking to prospecti ve homeowners, two thirds (66%) of renters thinking of buying a home in the next 3 years would say they are an important feature.
Seven in ten (70%) Americans would prefer to buy a home if it came with home fi re sprinklers, in-creasing to 80% of millennials and 84% of younger millennials. Similarly, 80% of renters planning to buy a home in the next three years would prefer a home that came with sprinklers. It is not only safety at play here, as nearly three quarters (72%) feel that having home fi re sprinklers installed adds more value to a home.

75%Three quarters (75%) of Americans say fi re safety is very important to them, with women slightly more inclined to feel this way (77% vs 72%). Additi onally, nearly seven in ten (68%) feel they know how to keep themselves and their family safe from home fi res, while two thirds (66%) think they follow fi re safety best practi ces in their home. Homeowners are more likely to report following fi re safety practi ces than renters (70% vs 58%).
