Scalable Carrier Ethernet Architecture

Globally carrier networks are under tremendous pressuretoexpandthebandwidthcapacityattheaccess and aggregation networks. The advancements of mobile and enterprise devices, offering high-definition video and robust real-time applications, haveexposedthearchitecturallimitationsoflegacynetworks. Even with the recent retrofits that add Ethernet capabilities, many of these networks arerunningatnearmaximumcapacity.

Ericsson is introducing a new class of converged access nodes with dual roles. The MINI-LINK SP series consists of the MINI-LINK SP 110, MINI-LINK SP 210 and MINI-LINK SP 310.

The architecture serves two roles. To provide an ultrascalable Ethernet foundation that reduces network churns and converge disparate circuit and packet technologies into a single unified packet transport.

The MINI-LINK SP 110 is the most cost-effective andcompactmodel.At1RUhighand16Gbpsofswitch-ing capacity, the MINI-LINK SP 110 is suitable for a cell-site or space constraint deployments.

At 1.5 RU, both the MINI-LINK SP 210 and 310 support industry largest switching capacities in its class. The MINI-LINKSP210supports36Gbpsandthe MINI-LINK SP 310 can handle a massive 120 Gbps of switching capacities to ensure that the nodes have enough future headroom for new innovative IP and video-centric broadband services.

Simplifying for Cell-Site Consolidation

The diversities of technologies and protocols in the access networks have always posed a challenge for the fixedandmobileconvergence.Toaddressthisissue,Ericsson has engineered the MINI-LINK SP series as feature-optimized nodes for packet transport services.

As a cell-site switch, the MINI-LINK SP 110 is designed for deployment at the very edge of mobile transport

networks directly interfacing the to the radio base stations.ItprovidesE-LINEbackhaulforexistingand future bandwidth demanding mobile broadband services.

Unlike the MINI-LINK SP 210 and 310, which supporttwooptionalexpansionmodules, the MINI-LINKSP110isafixedconfigurationswitchthatiscost-optimized.WitheightGigabitEthernet(fourcopper and four SFP) ports and ability to terminate eight T1/ E1 ports, the MINI-LINK SP 110 is highly-suited for deployment in small to medium cell-sites.

The copper gigabit Ethernet ports are designed to aggregate network appliances and site servers, while theSFPportscanbeusedtoextendfiberreachtotop of the tower where the microwave radios, such as MINI-LINK PTs, are located.

MINI-LINK SP 110 simplifies cell-site aggregation by converging 2G (T1/ E1), 3G and 4G ethernet-enabled interfaces into a single node. The aggregated traffic benefits additional efficiency from the native packet muxingswitchfabric.

The standard four T1/ E1 ports can also aggregate up to 8 T1/E1 channels. This is a cost-effective path for carriers looking to migrate the remaining circuits to all-packet. Each T1/E1 supports Circuit Emula-tion Services via well-recognized standards (SAToP, CESoPSN and MEF-8) that to enable DS-0 circuit transports over IP/UDP or VLAN pseudowires.

Ericsson Transport OS Reduces Backhaul Complexities

As a second level or metro aggregation node, the MINI-LINK SP 110 is built to deliver simplicity, guaranteed interoperability and uncompromising performance from the start.

The MINI-LINK’s heritage is well proven in the access backhaul area. At the time of this writing, Ericsson has delivered well over 2 million MINI-LINK nodes. And the MINI-LINK SP is designed to provide aggregation and packet transport features that are not only compatible with other MINI-LINK nodes but also with other equipment vendors, specializing in all-packet backhauls. The feature parity and interoperability with other vendors have been proven in various public events.

TheEricsson’sextensiveexperienceinthebackhaularea results in the new ETOS (Ericsson Transport OS). ETOS is a software framework that defines certain critical transport features, such as protocols (Provider Bridge 802.1ad, Circuit Emulation Service, MPLS-TP), OAM (802.3ah, 802.1ag, IP BFD and Y.1731), packet sync (1588v2, SyncE) and resiliency (G.8032 ERP, redundant LSP).The ETOS is not re-purposed from the core or metro operating systems, and it follows a focused approach. The stringent implementations of industry based standards have resulted a blazing fast performance and industry-leading simplicity – a critical factor in the access networks where the number of nodes count in the thousands or in some networks, in the tens of thousands.

Management and Provisioning Systems

MINI-LINK SP series supports the advanced Provider Bridge protocol based on the 802.1ad standard. The Provider Bridge implementation is fully interoperable with the MPLS-TP in the MINI-LINK SP 210 and 310.

WhendeployedincombinationwithCES(CircuitEmulation Services), the Provider Bridge tunnels both circuits and Ethernet pseudowires.

MINI-LINK SP 110, 210 and 310 are tightly integrated into Ericsson IP Transport NMS (Network Manage-ment System).

The combination provides intuitive GUI-based net-work element configurations, circuit provisioning and full FCAPS monitoring. Network operators will have the power to easily provision end-to-end tunnel services, automate provisioning workflows and monitor end-to-end circuit with point and click simplicity.
