Introduction

Welcome to the Ministry Matters Programme for 2016-2017.

We hope that the new annual programme builds on experience from last year, offering resources and programmes that will appeal to those in every kind of ministry in the Diocese of Southwark.

There are courses and events open to all those holding the Bishop’s licence or commission, and the vast majority are free.

The programme has been developed taking account of the training needs identified by clergy in their Ministerial Development Review, Readers’ annual feedback to the diocese and in collaboration with the SPA Council.

We hope that by continuing to publish the list of courses available for the whole year, you will be able to prioritise and plan for your own development needs.

The majority of courses can be booked through the Department of Discipleship and Ministry, but some courses focused on Children and Young People, and Safeguarding courses, must be booked through Eventbrite. Details are given on the relevant pages. In the event of any problem, or if you simply wish to know more about a particular course or event, please contact Caroline Wakelam-Jones, the Administrator, the Department of Discipleship and Ministry.

Your feedback on this programme and the courses you attend is always welcome and we are always delighted to receive your comments.

Exploring Catholic Understandings of Mission and Evangelism.

These four days are for those from a sacramental and Anglo-Catholic church tradition to explore catholic theologies of mission. We will draw on the work of a number of Anglican and Roman Catholic theologians to explore a particularly incarnational approach to the Anglican Marks of Mission and how this relates to the challenge of mission and evangelism in the 21st Century. It is hoped that the four days will assist those exploring a more catholic missiology to engage with the un-and-dechurched who are often coming from a more postmodern and post secular culture.

For Clergy and Readers

Ministry Matters 2016-2017

Coaching, consultancy and supervision is playing an increasingly important role in ministerial develop-ment. The department of Discipleship and Ministry has a range of practitioners who are able to offer such support to ministers in the diocese. This approach is often particularly valuable where an individual has identified development areas such as those suggested through the MDR process. It can also be a creative and helpful approach where strategies for addressing the contextual challenges in ministry and mission are hard to identify.

Tailored ministerial development is distinct from the informal support of peers in that it is a contract-ed arrangement. The department has a standard agreement that can be used for such arrangements. Use of this agreement is a requirement of tailored ministerial support identified through the MDR processes. This agreement does not frame the outcomes, but clarifies the commitment, length and type of process being entered into. A record of this agreement is a helpful indicator that a person has engaged in this valuable CMD activity. It is also important so that we can support people in coaching, mentoring and consultancy roles, and monitor the effectiveness of the arrangements which we have brokered. The type of support offered includes:

Coaching: A coach does not need to have a detailed understanding of the context, but offers to help an individual to find solutions to their own challenges through observation, asking good questions and offering a high level of support and challenge. Coaching is most useful in periods of transition or when a particular challenge is faced and would usually be short-to-medium term.

Mentoring: A mentor will have some experience in the area where support is being sought and will these share skills and experience. There is likely to be a mix of hard skills information sharing and reflection as well as questioning and problem solving in the conversation. Mentoring is most useful in supporting someone in a new role and would usually be medium term, up to a year in duration.

Peer Coaching Group (Action Learning Set): A group of no more than six people who meet together often and commit themselves to working rigorously to give each member time and space for questioning, reflection and action planning. In Action Learning the set members work together with a facilitator to enable the set members to act as coaches for one another. Action Learning is most useful where an issue for development is a complex contextual problem or an area of strategic change.

Consultancy: This is probably somewhere between coaching and mentoring, in that the consultant is likely to have experience in a similar role, but may bring skills and experience from the secular world. A consultant may offer models and analysis of a situation and will work with an individual or team over a longer period, probably with less frequent meetings. Consultancy is often useful where a larger group or team is involved in determining solutions and implementing actions.

Pastoral Supervision: This is a relationship between a qualified therapist or counsellor which is intended to allow the clergy person to process their response to the stresses and strains of ministry. The focus is more likely to be on the past than on particular future challenges and the relationship may be long term or open ended. An introduction to pastoral supervision is offered on 15 June 2017, see P17.

How to Apply: For further details on tailored support and to discuss the most appropriate option, please contact the Department of Discipleship and Ministry. Individuals may also be contacted with a recommendation for tailored development following a Ministerial Development Review.

Role Descriptions as a Tool for MinistryMandy Ford and Jane Steen Trinity House

Ministry is complex and challenging at a time of change, when many clergy feel overwhelmed by the demands on their time and struggle to prioritise their tasks. The Church of England recommends that every clergy person should have a role description which outlines their parish context and identifies priorities for mission and ministry. This is an opportunity to shape your role description for further conversation with your PCC and as a tool for Ministerial Development Review.

Helpful for all clergy under Common Tenure

Enriching Biblical Understanding: A Reading Group Trinity House

For all kinds of reasons your biblical knowledge may not be as deep as you would like it to be, but once you are ordained it can be hard to admit it and hard to find the time to work on it. We are looking for members for a new reading group which would commit to meeting on a regular basis over a year and to read material in advance.

The material would be rigorous and might include the sort of things you missed out reading during your training. However it is not intended for specialists so no Hebrew or Greek. The first meeting of the group will be facilitated, but the main resource will be the group members.

To express an interest please contact the Department of Discipleship and Ministry before 1 October 2016

During this day we will reflect on the importance of place in our lives and how place shapes our being, our prayer, our relationships. We will also enjoy being at Wychcroft as a special place.

Safeguarding: Introduction

The Diocese offers an extensive programme of safeguarding training for individuals in a range of roles and responsibilities in our parishes and other settings. Safeguarding courses form part of the IME programme and are also available as part of ongoing ministerial development.

Our safeguarding training programme is aimed at equipping church officers to implement safe working practices within the church environment for children, young people and adults who may be at risk of abuse. It seeks to enable and promote sensitive and effective responses to allegations and emerging safeguarding concerns. We focus on the importance of responding well to those who have been harmed, working with others as part of a team within the parish, using the support available across the Diocese and engaging with external partners. We aim to ensure that all those attending our courses leave with an enhanced understanding of their safeguarding responsibilities, an awareness of the relevant policies and procedures, and knowledge of when and where to access additional advice and support. We use a range of case studies and exercises to explore good practice.

The diocesan safeguarding programme is aligned to the national Learning and Development Framework as approved by the House of Bishops in 2016. It includes a one day safeguarding course for incumbents, licensed and authorised ministers. That course is available during 2016/17 both to those new to the Diocese and to those already in ministry in Southwark.

There are minimum requirements for participation in safeguarding training for all those who hold the Bishop’s licence, commission or permission to officiate.

For individuals who have previously attended safeguarding training in the Diocese, we offer opportunities to refresh and extend knowledge through a Safeguarding Refresher Workshop. There are regular courses available on Responding to Domestic Abuse and we are aiming to offer some additional workshops in other areas.
