What Miss Asia Honolulu, Jasmine Nip, has been up to after being crowned...

Miss Asia Honolulu 2012

Jasmine Nip

Being Miss Asia Honolulu has been one of the best experiences I have ever been apart of. I have been able to do and participate in so many things and meet so many great people. After being newly crowned I went to Girl Fest, which promotes the prevention of violence against women, and girls through education and art. Girl Fest incorporates music, film, art, dance and spoken word to get its message out to the public. I was able to see young women empowering themselves. I’ve attended a few Chinese Society dinners, which were all great and allowed me to learn more about my Chinese heritage and feel close to the local Chinese community. I was invited to watch other local pageants like Miss Hawaii and Cherry Blossom

Festival ball. I traveled to Sacrament to judge the Miss Asia Sacramento Pageant. I’ve been active in the community in partnering with businesses for their golf tournaments to raise money for local charities. I hope to participate with Special Olympics in the coming year. One of my favorite experiences is flying to San Francisco to compete in the Miss Asian Global pageant. I had a full week of activities and sponsor visits and learn more about different Asian cultures. I won the Miss Community Service Award for being active in the community and created a lifetime of friendships and memories. I can’t wait for the next great adventure as Miss Asia Honolulu.

5December 2012MISS ASIA EXPERIENCES

Growing up in Honolulu, did you aspire to be in pageants? What influenced your decision to enter this pageant? I never aspired to be in pageants. You could say it more or less just happened. I entered my first pageant because I thought it would be a great experience; and from that point on, I have been hooked on doing others. The whole experience from top to bottom is such a great time, and there really is nothing like it. As for this one in particular, I thought I would be able to represent the title “Asia Hawaii” to the fullest extent due to my unique background of having both the Asian culture, as well as my upbringing as a child here in Hawaii.

Asians are a growing population in today’s society, but they are still classified as minorities. How do you think your role as Miss Asia Hawaii has helped shape the future, and pave the way for Asian cultures, as well as others? As previously mentioned, I was able to use my title while furthering my work in education. More specifically, I was able to

tutor local Japanese children in their native language while acting as Miss Asia Hawaii. I think it is important that language is carried on through the generations, and I feel that culture is also passed through language. It is my sincere hope to keep both the Japanese language and culture alive here in Hawaii.

What are your future goals? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Are planning on con-tinuing with pageants? I feel as though this is my last pageant. I feel as though I can still serve the community without any pageant titles. I hope to one day have an important role in

maintaining the ties between Asia and Hawaii through my work in education.

What was the biggest change you have made in the community since being crow-ned? And how will you help support the Miss Asia Hawaii pageant in the future?

Although I love what I have been able to accomplish since earning the title, I know that my teaching of Japanese to only a few children has only had a minimal impact as of yet. However, I hope that one day the children will continue their Japanese language education, and then are able to pass on their knowledge to others as well. In the future, I hope to be of service to any contestant or queen hoping to follow in the same field.

Do you have any advice to any future contestants? If I could give advice to the contestants, it would be to be yourself. It is much easier to be who you are than someone you are not. I think Dr. Seuss said it best: “Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind, don’t matter.”

We asked Miss Asia Hawaii,

Shay Fukayama, a few questions.

My most memorable moment on pageant day was the dress rehearsal. I rememeber receiving many little gifts and goodies from the others and thinking “wow! I am really lucky to have been able to experience this and be able to share it with these other gorgeous ladies!” I also remember the feeling in the air, it was somewhat hectic but at the same time we had all been prepared so well that it felt natural and like we didn’t have to work to hard because it was just about programmed into us. Thank you all for helping me along my way through this amazing experience!

GLAMQuestion from

„Lashless” from Sacramento:

Is the smokey eye look still in? Can

anyone wear that look? How do I

know if I’m wearing too much makeup?

Hi Lashless,

Thank you for your question. The smokey eye look is a classic look and will never be out of trend. Every-body can pull off the smokey eye look; whether you have big eyes, small eyes, short eyes, brown, blue, green eyes the possibilities are endless. Smokey eyes doesn’t have to be dark, you can go neutral or use bold colors. It can be soft or dramatic. All depends on your preference. I’ve always say before you apply makeup always use a small amount first, get the shape you want and then apply more if you

need because if you put too much on right a way and you know its too much, its a pain to start all over again. Trust me, I’ve been there, its not fun. Also, it doesn’t hurt to get an opinion from another person if you put too much on or even take a picture and judge for yourself. Well, I hope that was a little helpful. Thank you Lashless for your question. If anybody has any questions for me email me at [email protected]

XOXO, Sherry

Beauty tips that everyone has trouble with...

Red Lips on Teeth: After you finish applying your lipstick, take a tissue and fold it and pressed them onto you lips, that way it takes off the excess lipstick. Then stick your index finger in your mouth and slowly twist and pull it out. And if you want to go that extra step, apply a very thin layer of vaseline on your teeth, that way it would be too slick for the lipstick to adhere on your teeth.

In photo: Samantha Termizi

Eyeshadow Fall Out: Hold a folded tissue under your eyes. This will help catch any of the eyeshadow fall out and doesn’t ruin your hard work. If you still have a little fall out, just take the same foundation brush you use to apply your foundation and wipe off any fall out.

In photo: Helena Chow

Too Much Blush: First, take a step back and look at your face for a far. If your cheeks look like the 80’s then you’ve probably done too much. An easy way to tone it down without having to redo your whole face again is to take the same foundation brush you apply with and with whatever was left over gently go over the cheek area. If you feel you need more foundation then just add a very small amount to your brush, swirl it to the back of your hand and go over your cheeks. In photo: Pinhwa Su

Mrs. Asia California 2012, Sabrina Q. Chen,

gives us a few tips on buying homes!

R eal estate is all about location, location, location! As a real estate agent in the

Sacramento region, I’ve witnessed the highest (2006) and the lowest, most current real estate market. In turn, I know how to help my clients to sell and buy real property in their best interests. Do you remember when you first started looking for a home? The excitement, the expectation, and the anxiety or maybe even the frustration, all comes at once when searching for that perfect place. A place we can call “home, sweet home.” Statistic studies suggest that the Medium Number Views before pur-chasing are the following:Year 2007: 15Year 2008: 14Year 2009: 14Year 2010: 15Year 2011: 12

How did people find their homes? 80% through an agent13% web search4% sale sign3% open house

The results of this study illustrates that when you are buying/selling a home, it’s good to use an agent to provide all the information you need to protect your interests from the beginning search and during the transaction of the escrow.

How to select your new home?1. Walking abilities.2. Re-sell values.

Let’s take a look of the No. 1 subject: Walking abilities. We all know walking is good for us, but it can also be very important when buying and selling a home. Walk

scores are determined based on the proximity of amenities such as restaurants and shops, and community hubs such as schools, parks and libraries. When you are in a walkable residential neighborhood, it’s adventurous. This is because you will lose weight by taking your family and dogs to the park more often, saving $$ on transportation to the shops,

and movie theaters among other benefits. Often, a higher walk score neighborhood is linked to a higher home value. Visit www. Walkscore.com.

Re-sell valueThis is based on the location, location, location… again and of course including the level of the maintenance of the property as well. The competition remains high for buyers. There is no shortage of buyers in today’s real estate market. The today’s reality is that nearly half of the properties in California are receiving multiple offers. This is a good time to consider selling.

Why is a good time to buy?The market is experiencing historically low interest rates for a mortgage loan (3.92% - 5.00% it depends on your personal credit score), which means it’s the perfect time to buy a home. Buying a home is fun, but at times it can be very stressful. I believe all clients have that emotional sensor ability of walking into an open house and saying: “My God, this is my new home?!” As an agent, I strongly believe that understanding the client’s needs is the first step to provide a good quality service. When the client has that great feeling in the home you are showing means you are doing pretty well. But as always, they need to know that at the same time that many others also can be seeing this home as a perfect place for them,

too! So, how can you get the home you like? Simply give your best offer, and hope your best is better than the others. As a final thought, since the property tax is based on the percentage of the purchase price, with the current market home prices being low, you are saving more than one vacation trip to Europe, twice to China, and three times to Mexico each year. Life is good when you have a home with your name on the Pro-perty Deed. Welcome to the dream land and own your piece of it! Hope we will have the op-portunity to talk about commercial real estate next time. Until then….

MEET HAIRSTLIST: LING CHAN

Ling Chan was born and raised in Malaysia. Although she now lives in the United States, she has maintained a close relationship with her family that still lives far away. Her parents taught her valuable life lessons such as good work ethics, pride in whatever she does, always do her best, and treat others with kindness and respect. Armed with her core values for life, her love for others, and her passion for beauty and glamor, she began to study and develop the craft she loves so much. And now, after almost a decade of experience

as a hair stylist, multiple shows and competitions, and graduating the rigorist Vidal Sassoon training, she has become one of the most coveted stylist and glamour consultants in Northern California. Ling’s goal is to use her talents and her genuinely warm and caring personality to bring out the beauty and glamor in everyone she meets. Thus, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Is it any wonder why her clients love and adore her? After all, to Ling, it is about creating lasting relationships of love, respect, honor, AND making you look your best.

Time is flying before my eyes! I can’t believe how fast time passes by. First off, I want

to show my appreciation to our director, Debra Ichimura, for helping each and every contestant in many ways and caring for us every step of the way. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn more about Asian heritage and ourselves. In addition, I want to thank all the staff and volunteers because without their individual talents and blessings, this organizations’ success would not be possible. I realize people often portray beauty queens with certain kind of image, but the title comes with great commitment, responsibility and motivation. Throughout my journey as a Miss Asia Los Angeles Queen, I learned to thrive to be the best I can

be for others to follow. In the future, I want to help others walk the right path. I know I will not be able to fight other people’s battles for them, but I want to help them defeat their personal demons. I finally see that I can best help others by sharing my experiences and compassion with them. This wonderful organization has made seek to empo-wer Asian women, gain confidence, and perform good deeds. Moreover, I had a privilege to attend numerous diverse events to support and to help great causes. I hope many local Asia women will be inspired by the pageant. I am thrilled to see this organization grow and expand to other areas of California! Proverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, But a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

21MISS ASIA QUEENS

MISS TEEN ASIA SACRAMENTO:Michelle Thach What are your experiences with Miss Asia Sacramento?I have experienced manymemorable and fun events that I’ve attended as Miss Teen Asia Sacramento. Events such as Girls’ Self Esteem Pageant, showed me that girls beauty flourish within and greatness is achieved with hard work. Other events like the California State fair cooking show gave me an experience

that I would never forget. I was able to show an audience how to cook Beef Stir Fry over noodles. The event was a memorable one. Besides the fun events I attend as a queen. I’ve also grown a close bond to my dear friend, Judy Lee. She is Miss Asia Sacramento’s queen. We go to events together and we always have fun. She has taught me a lot as a young woman. We have grown a lot closer as two people.

As Miss Asia Sacramento, what qualities do you bring to the pageant?I believe that I bring hard work, perserverance and determination to the pageant. As a junior in high-school I am taking multiple AP classes, advanced placement classes.

...showed me that girls beauty flourish within and great-ness is achieved with hard work.”

The classes are considered challenging. I maintain a B average in all of my AP classes. I stay up late nights to finish my homework and study. I preserve through the hard times in school. I also have one leadership class in which I lead my school. As an ASB (associated study body) leader, my peers look up to me as a guide. As a team, we run events and work together.

What are your roles as Miss Teen Asia?My roles as queen, you can say, is support our supporters. We attend events of our sponsers such as APAPA and AADP. For AADP we help find bone marrow donors by advertising and having them sign up for the organization. Showing our attendance makes us appreciate them even more than we already do.
