MISSION POSSIBLE: INDIA Project Profiles 2016

VIDYASHILP ACADEMY

Mission Possible students at Vidyashilp Academy worked to improve the quality of education at a school for Sri Lankan refugees. They restored the school library, conducted workshops to improve students’ literacy skills and global awareness, engaged in dialogues about health and hygiene, and coordinated guest lessons delivered by Vidyashilp teachers

to provide additional math support for students and teachers. The Mission Possible students contributed to increased engagement in educational activities for students and teachers, as well as greater awareness of and openness about health and hygiene issues!

Project Objectives: • Improve students’ literacy skills and global

awareness

• Improve personal health and hygiene of students

• Provide targeted support toward problem areas in curriculum

Activities: • Collected, restored and categorized books for

the school library

• Conducted dialogues to raise awareness about personal health and hygiene

• Conducted workshops to improve research and public speaking skills

• Invited Vidyashilp math teachers to conduct guest lessons at the partner school

Results: • Increased student interest in reading and made

the school library more student-friendly

• Greater student awareness and openness about issues of health and hygiene

• School instituted daily assemblies to provide opportunities for students to practice their communication skills

• Teachers report increased student understanding and engagement during math lessons

Next Steps: Vidyashilp’s Agents of Change plan to continue their engagement with the school by providing more learning materials and inviting them to participate in future events at Vidyashilp Academy.
