MEASUREMENTS
On-line measurement of the salt concentration in crude oil plays an important role in the
crude oil chain, from the well head until entering the crude distillation unit. The MOD-4100 S
is on-line salt in crude oil analyzer, which is designed to provide real time analytical data of
the salt content in crude oils. Its technology is based on ASTM D 3230, an electrometric
methods. This method determines the salt concentration in crude oil by measuring its
conductivity, when dissolved in a s mixture of an aromatic and an alcoholic solvent.
SALT CONTENT IN CRUDE OIL (PTB or mg/L)
Provides online critical data of crude oil qualities.
Provides on-line data about the salt content at the
oil-well head
Provides on line data of the salt content prior and
after shipment
Provides on-line data of the salt content after
blending
Provides on-line data of the salt content before
entering the desalter
Indicates the desalter efficiency.
Allows on-line optimization of the desalter process
conditions.
Reduces water, chemicals and energy consumption in the desalters.

SALT IN CRUDE OIL
Crude oils and crude oil blends have
different physical and chemical
properties, which depend primarily
on their place of origin. Even if
originated from the same location,
fluctuations in physical properties are a
common phenomenon. Several quality
properties have impact on the cost and
ability to process the crude oils in a
certain refineries, among these the salt
content. On line information of the salt
concentration in crude oil is critical to
prevent corrosion, fouling and plugging
of the pipelines and production units of
the refinery.
\
The MOD 4100 S is an on-line salt in
crude oil process analyzer, which is
designed to provide real time analyses
of the salt concentration in crude oils,
expressed in PTB or mg/l. Its technology
is based on a wet chemical
electrometric conductivity method.
Incorporation of the MOD 4100 S
before, between and after the desalters
provides an effective tool to operate the
desalter at maximum efficiency and at
lowest cost for reducing the salt content
to its minimum, before the crude oil
enters into the CDU.
The importance of measuring on-line the
salinity of crude oil is not restricted to
the refinery operation only, but is also
essential from a commercial point of
view.
The salt content in crude oil is one of the
parameters that will have influence the
crude oil quality and by that its
commercial value.
The MOD 4100 S enables to check the
salt in crude quality before and after
loading and unloading, during
transportation from the oil-well to the
terminals, during shipment and during
transportation from the terminals and
tank-farms to the the refineries.

The MOD 4100 S salt in crude analyzer has
been designed to perform quantitative
analyses of the salt concentration in crude
oils. Based on ASTM D 3230, the MOD 4100
S applies a wet chemical electrometric
method, which determines the salt
concentration of crude oils through
measuring its conductivity in solution.
Measurement Procedures
The analytical procedure starts with
sampling of the process stream and
bringing a well defined quantity of the
sample into the analyzers measuring cell.
This is fully automatically and accurately
performed by an electronic system that
controls a set of precise pumps and valves.
An accurate amount of a sample of crude oil is brought into the measuring cell. Precise volumes of solvents are accurately added to the cell content and mixed with the sample. The salt concentration is determined by measuring the conductivity of a the crude oil sample dissolved sample in fixed amount of diluents. When the measurement are terminated, the cell content is discarded, and the system flushes rinses and cleans itself automatically.
Error messages will be displayed in any case
of a faulty status .
Samples can be taken from vessels, pipes
vessels, bypasses or pressure pipes.
According to that a sampling system is
designed to feed the analyzer with a sample
at optimized conditions, to guarantee the
provision of precise analytical results.
