Make sure your nib is prepped! Clean the nib with a little spit and toothpaste. Only needs to be done once in the life of the nibor until ink sticks to the nib.
Shake your ink! If you’re using an ink with larger pigment particles (like gouache, FW and metallics), you’ll get much better results by shaking ink thoroughly before use.
Check ink consistency. If your ink is blobbing or not responding to your pen’s movements, it may be too thick. Decant a portion into a small jar and slowly add a few drops of water (distilled if you have it) at a time.
Don’t over ink your nib. Dip your nib into the ink past the vent, and scrape excess from both front and back sides of the nib.Alternatively, you can apply ink to the underside of the nib with a small brush. It’s slow but gives perfect results every time.
Use good paper. If you can’t access Rhodia or Clairefontaine paper, try a high quality matte laser printer paper (28# weightor higher).
Use correct positioning. Rotate your paper so your tines are parallel to your downstroke angle. Applying equal pressure to bothtines of the nib on downward motions reduces nib breakage and splattering ink.
Go lightly. All upstrokes are supposed to be made with the lightest touch, barely grazing the paper’s surface. Hairlines should be as thick as a strand or two of hair.
Use the right nib for YOU. If you still find that your nib is skipping on upstrokes, try a di�erent nib.
