The content of a pull quote, also called a call out or lift-out quote, is intended to grab the reader’s eye. It might briefly sum up an important point in the article, or use a shocking quote to catch the reader’s attention. Once the reader sees the pull quote, the hope is that he or she will be pulled into the feature piece.

The drop cap is the first letter of a paragraph that is enlarged to drop down a couple of lines.

The byline on a newspaper or magazine article gives the name, and often the position, of the writer of the article. Bylines are traditionally placed between the headline and the text of the article, although some magazines place bylines at the bottom of the page, to leave more room for graphical elements around the headline.

In a magazine the endnote informs the reader that they have reached the end of the article. Its style varies from magazine to magazine.

Different styles and sizes of font are used for effect in magazine articles. The goal is to have maximum impact and to attract the reader. It is also chosen to suit the type of article being read.

Colour is used again for maximum impact and to attract the reader. Combinations will often be linked to match each other, e.g. black/white, pink/purple. Sometimes they are linked to what the subject of the article is about.

Layout refers to the placement of the photographs, headings and article. It is carefully planned to create a pleasing and attractive effect to entice the reader.

Each magazine has its own ‘I.D’ or logo. This is to identify the name of the magazine to the reader and promote it further.

Magazines sometimes have specialised sections within them such as ‘True Life’ or ‘Real Experience’. Often there is a promotion on the page inviting readers to write in with ‘their story’
