• Continuing the War…

Battle of Verdun & Somme, France

• Germany staged a surprise attack against the French at Verdun—one of the bloodiest battles of the war —both sides suffered a half million casualties.

• Somme – the British attacked the Germans in the Somme River valley in Northern France – over 1 million people died. No side won.

The Eastern Front

• More mobile than the Western Front

• Russia did not have the resources or skills to fight a modern fight.

• The Russians helped to divert German troops to the eastern front.

Gallipoli Campaign

• Winston Churchill – head of the English navy -- thought of an alternative to fighting in France, coming through the Dardanelles strait; which was controlled by Turkey or the Ottoman Empire.

• It was unsuccessful.

On the Seas

• Great Britain dominated the seas and blocked all ports under German control.

• Germany was hurt because they could not get supplies in, except from neutral countries.

Submarine Warfare• Germans introduced submarine warfare (U-

boats) to run down the British ships.• At first only striking warships, but by 1915 they

began to strike passenger ships they believed were carrying supplies to the Allies.– The Lusitania, a passenger ship carrying 128

Americans was hit and Germany argued it was carrying supplies.

– Woodrow Wilson threatened Germany to stop attacking, and the Germans responded by stopping… for awhile.

U.S. enters the War

• American public opinion divided• Most Americans favored the Allies• Led to war

– February 1st, 1917, Germany would sink any merchant ships heading to Britain.

– Zimmerman telegram—March, 1917– Lusitania

• President Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war on April 2, 1917
