SEPTEMBER 8TH IS INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY .The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organiza-tion (UNESCO) established Literacy Day in 1965 to call attentionto the world-wide issues of illiteracy. Nations throughout the worldrecognize that deficits in literacy are contributing to unemployment, poverty and many other societal problems. It is more likely forchildren to have low literacy in homes where parents have loweducational levels. Conversely, children with engaged home lit-eracy environments demonstrate higher reading levels at an ear lyage. In New York, an estimated 2.7 million adults lack basic lit-eracy, math and employment stills. Low-level reading and mathskills are linked to poverty, incarceration and dropout rates. What’smore, the same individuals lack basic health, financial and con-sumer literacy, according to Literacy New York, Inc., which servesmore than 6,500 adults each year through a network of 34 affili-ates and their volunteers. Although these statistics are grim, there’sno reason to give up hope, because you can help! Reflections: Of EternalYouthWhen I was a little girl, visits to my grandparents’ home were fullof magic. My Grandma Theresa and I used to sit at her dining roomtable in beautiful wooden chairs, side by side with our heads bent

over coloring books. She had a Barbie coloring book for me, which I adored—notbecause I liked Barbie dolls (in fact, I preferred GI Joes, thank you very much) butbecause I liked to color actual people rather than the cartoon characters in all of theother books. There was a battered old Royal Dansk cookie tin, chock full of dingsand dents and Crayola crayons for about as long as I can remember. And there was astack of coloring books to choose from, but Grandma always kept the Barbie bookset aside for me. There were many grandchildren to compete with, after all, and sheknew how important this particular book was to me. I was very adamant aboutcoloring the entire book, page by page, and she knew that I would have been crushedif any of the other kids had scribbled carelessly across the precious pages.

So we would sit there at that table and color at every opportunity. Grandma taughtme how to stay within the lines by first tracing the characters’ outlines with the tip of the crayon, and then shading within the outline with the tip slanted at an angle. Shetaught me how to pronounce the names of the colors, names like “Mahogany” and“Magenta,” “Chartreuse” and “Turquoise.” We deliberated upon important decisions, such as whether Ken’s hair should be colored with “Indian Red” or “Ultra Blue.” Wegiggled together like we were both schoolgirls, telling each other stories about eachpicture we colored until we had created a Barbie Universe of our own, in whichneither of us were too young or too old or too anything. We were just two girls withthe power of our imaginations fueling us through page after page of delight until oneday when, after we had finished our coloring and were sitting on the back deck, Icould not help but to grin up at Grandma from where I sat swinging by my hands fromthe railing. “Grandma,” I smiled, “I’m never gonna grow up. I’m gonna stay eightforever!”And she smiled back at me and said, “You know what? Me too.”

By Rachel Essaff Maher

From Susan’s Corner …fall happens here…There isn’t a soul around who can complain about not havinganything to do in southwestern New England. Especially inBennington County! I know this because I’m part of a group of volunteers who help out at these events. First we have GarlicFest held every year at Camelot Village. I hope everyone reading

this took the opportunity to participate in this great event last weekend! There isalways so much to see and do. If you didn’t make it this year be sure to go nextyear. Following Garlic Fest two weeks later is the annual three-day long BenningtonCar Show at Willow Park in Bennington with vendors, classic cars, entertainmentand good food. A month later you can enjoy Oktoberfest at Colgate Park, again inBennington, sponsored by the Norshaft Lions Club. This offers an entire dayfilled with music, great German foods, vendors and toe-tapping entertainment bythe Rymanowski Brothers from Troy, New York.…Speaking of fall…I have a beautiful ride into Bennington taking back roads. Iknow all the dogs and cats by sight who live along the way. I drive at a moderatespeed because of them and the wildlife I encounter. It’s so wonderful to seeseveral deer grazing in a field; a flock of turkeys walking through the tall grass; anerrant fox dashing across the road; a mother raccoon slowly walking from oneside of the road to the other with her young following behind in single file; andgeese, watching over their young keeping everyone “flocked” together. In anothermonth we will be picking apples and by October we’ll be drinking hot applecider!!The new smart phones make it so easy to stop and take pictures of these bucolicscenes to and from Bennington. Even videos! Yes, folks, fall really does happenhere!
