Spontaneous, witty and fun, Late Nite Catechism is a highly interactive show starring Patti Hannon as tart-tongued Sister. Ruling her classroom with an iron fist, she teaches her students – who happen to be the audience – everything she knows about sins and saints while doling out rewards and reprimands with lightning speed.

In Late Nite Catechism III: ’Til Death Do Us Part, Sister offers up even more, including the latest doctrine fresh

off the Web, some hilarious lessons about love and marriage and her own outrageous ‘newlywed’ game. Each Late Nite Catechism performance is unique and will appeal to people of all ages and faiths.

Late Nite Catechism debuted at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in June 2000 and was an overnight sensation, eventually becoming the longest-running theatrical production in Arizona. Originally a Chicago actor, Hannon has performed the role of Sister in all of the Scottsdale productions. Daddy Long LegsLast Chance to See a Masterfully Performed Play

Only a few days remain if you wish to catch the delightful award-winning play, “Daddy Long Legs” presented by the Arizona Theatre Company at the Herberger Theater Center. The play runs through January 15th and tells the story of a turn of the century era 18-year-old orphan girl who is given a col-lege education by an anonymous benefactor. The only catch is that she must write to him monthly and should never expect a reply or any contact with him. They know very little about each other as the story unfolds and both of their initial opinions will have to change greatly for this love story to actually transpire. How that happens is exactly what the story is about.

The 2-person play is a musical, highlighted by pitch-perfect vocal performances turned in by Megan McGinnis, who plays orphan Jerusha Abbott and Rob-ert Adelman Hancock, playing Jervis Pendleton, her anonymous benefactor. It is a difficult and daunting task to divide the volu-minous library of lines and songs between only two actors and they should be noted for turning in such flawless performances and delivery. Fans of romance and light comedy will surely enjoy this performance which builds with each letter written between them.

After an exciting start to the season in front of a sold-out Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Monster Energy AMA Supercross and FIM World Championship heads to Phoenix this weekend for the second race of 2012 from Chase Field. Reigning champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto dominated last Saturday night, posting a flag-to-flag win and starting his title defense on a high note. Last weekend, Villopoto made a statement to his rivals with his impressive performance. After grabbing the Nuclear Cowboyz®

Villopoto sprinted through the opening laps, setting an exceptionally quick pace and opening up a healthy advantage over the field. Behind him, TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey, and Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart engaged in a captivating battle for the runner-up spot that kept the capacity crowd on its feet, in an uproar. Ultimately, a crash by Stewart allowed Reed and Dungey to duel for second, with Reed prevailing. After playing integral roles in the most competitive season in Monster Energy Supercross history in 2011, each of these four riders proved that there is more hotly-contested racing in store for 2012. The dominant effort by Villopoto not only gives the Washington native the early points lead, but also puts the pressure on his three closest rivals since none were able to contend with the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider once the gate dropped.

While Villopoto’s early sprint made it difficult for his competitors to challenge for the win, the “big four” showed their exceptional talent as the only riders in the entire 20-man field to post a lap under 1:02.000 on an extremely technical and challenging track. Even though Villopoto has delivered the first blow in the championship battle, there is no doubt that Reed, Dungey, and Stewart will be putting in extra hours both on the track and in the gym this week to come back stronger than ever inside Chase Field and respond with their own winning effort. In the opening race of the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class Championship, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil Honda’s Cole Seely took advantage of a top-three start to grab his third professional victory and lead the point standings for the first time in his career. The Western Regional Supercross Lites Class is exceptionally deep

in young talent, and it showed last Saturday. Seely will look to keep the momentum going this weekend in Phoenix, while is counterparts will also look to assert themselves in the short eight-race championship. Randy: “Angelina Jolie’s feature film directorial debut is not an easy one to watch. This drama set amongst the civil strife in Bosnia has a slight Hollywood feel, with an outcome that is painfully real. The background story is one that few Westerners know; yet the romantic storyline is somewhat familiar. Overall, ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ is an impressive debut dealing with a tough subject matter.” Grade: B+

‘The Iron Lady’

Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep) breaks through class and gender bar-riers to become the United Kingdom’s first female prime minister. (PG-13 – 105 minutes)

Stan: “Oscar® winner Meryl Streep brings a ‘tour de force’ view of Marga-ret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of England and the motivat-ing factors of both before and during her term. Yes, its slow and methodi-cally paced, which gives the viewer

many moments of reflection of the woman who would dare to strive for the highest position of power and how she used it to attain her objectives among a male dominated system. ” Grade: B

Randy: “Every year there are numer-ous political biopics released that are over-acted, entirely too long and are created in the hopes of scoring mul-tiple award nominations. Last year’s ‘J. Edgar’ was one of those films. Meryl Streep’s performance as Mar-garet Thatcher is impressive in ‘The Iron Lady,’ but at times feels more like a caricature than the real thing. The film is light on content and feels as if it was created just to highlight Streep’s talent.” Grade: C

Joseph: “If I were to simply say that Meryl Streep gives an outstand-ing performance in ‘The Iron Lady,’ anyone – regardless if they have seen the new Margaret Thatcher biopic or not – would likely ask me to tell them something they did not already know. Needless to say, the actress appears to do no wrong. Unfortunately, such was the case with Leonardo DiCaprio’s turn as Hoover in last fall’s ‘J. Edgar,’ that is where the praise peaks. That is because the movie itself is merely a monotonous

‘Joyful Noise’

Two strong-willed singers (Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton) must learn to work in harmony if their Georgia church choir is to stay together and win a national competition. (PG-13 – 118 minutes)

Stan: “One doesn’t have to be into gospel music to come away with the basic themes of friendships, moth-erhood, and tenacity are breezily presented while not ‘preaching to the choir’ on spirituality. The musi-cal selections in a pop-gospel style, elicits toe taping while the talents of the principal actors representing the ‘parenting generation’ and the young people of the ‘millennium genera-tion’ entering adulthood, are aptly conveyed. And yes, the ending gets the typical Hollywood wrap up all the scenarios in a nice, neat little pack-age, that said, ‘Joyful Noise’, with the musical talents of the cast and the ‘quip-dialogue’ exchanges, keeps the uplifting aspects ever present as it breezily presents the lessons.” Grade: C+

Joseph: “One would think upon watching the musical grand finale of the new spiritual comedy ‘Joy-ful Noise’ that the movie was lively, colorful and multifaceted. Alas, that is most certainly not the case as the flick could have represented itself far more accurately by essentially dropping the first word in its title. Moreover, the motion picture’s primary plot – in which Queen Latifah is at the center of – is entirely too thin while its expo-nentially more entertaining ensemble cast members are wasted with very little to do whatsoever.” Grade: D

‘London River’

Fate brings together a British widow (Brenda Blethyn) and an African man (Sotigui Kouyaté) as they look for their missing offspring. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (NR – 87 minutes)

Joseph: “Writer/director Rachid Bouchareb’s ‘London River’ is deeply affecting but primarily as a result of its subject matter as opposed to its screenplay or the way in which the events are handled. That is to say that the filmmaker deserves very little of the credit for the intense emotions that the new drama about the 2005 terrorist attack in London elicits from the viewer as his story is strangely simplistic and his technique tends

to rely on convenient coincidences. On the other hand, in delivering his characters to an exceptionally inti-mate place, Bouchareb gives his two lead actors a chance to truly shine.” Grade: C

‘Pariah’

Though not yet out to her parents, a Brooklyn teenager (Adepero Oduye) embraces her identity as a lesbian and searches for her first lover. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R – 86 minutes)

Stan: “Undertaking the common theme of ‘teen angst’ which is often explored in cinema with ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ (1955) starring the late great James Dean coming mind, ‘Pariah’ presents those very issues in an urban setting with those elements firmly defined by writer/director Dee Reese’s first feature film, with inspired performances by the cast as the characters are clearly defined within their respective issues clearly establishes the moral and the oh so human traits that are ever present.” Grade: C+

Randy: “Years ago, the subject of sexual expression in teens would

have been groundbreaking, but after numerous similar releases, such as ‘La Mission’ and ‘Gun Hill Road,’ the premise of ‘Pariah’ is something we have seen before, just set in a dif-ferent neighborhood. Strong perfor-mances make this one a standout. Most noteworthy is the supporting role, played by Kim Wayans. This performance is a highlight of Wayans’ career.” Grade: B+

“A lot of these military guys in law enforcement have to deal with the most hardcore stuff in the world that nobody really wants to deal with. People want to wake up, drink their coffee, have a nice drive to work and hopefully there’s not too much traffic. These guys wake up and get phone calls like, ‘Hey, we got a guy covered in gasoline with a straight razor and he’s high on PCP.’ Who wants to go figure that out?” – Johnny Strong

OFFER RARE TEQUILA…

Considered One Of The Best In The World!

The Spotted Donkey Cantina at el Pedregal is one of only five restaurants in the state to offer its own tequila. Spotted Donkey management was selected to go on a tour with a privileged group of U.S. restaurateurs, to be part of an exclusive “Buy the Barrel” program that took place at the Casa Herradura in Amatitan, Jalisco Mexico. General Manager, Cameron Carlin, completed a comprehensive two day tour that included a start-to-finish learning process about how to produce the best tequilas in the world.

The “Double Barrel” course also included tastings from three barrels—each different in taste, nose, and expression. Carlin chose the third barrel, which he thought complemented Spotted Donkey’s menu the best. His choice, the Herradura Double Barrel Reposado, is a non-blended tequila that is rested in oak barrels for eleven months to achieve an inviting smoothness and then rested an additional month in a second, toasted oak barrel especially crated for finishing the maturation process. The tequila has a limited 240 bottle production that will be available at Spotted Donkey in addition to the “chilling machine” that cools the tequila to eight degrees for a perfect “neat” shot without ice. Carlin says, “Casa Herradura was expected to only sell 25 barrels in the first year, but we were barrel number 132! That’s 132 barrels of unique one-of-a kind tequila.”

In addition to the exclusive tequila, Spotted Donkey will also be adding new cocktails and tequila

choices to the menu. New choices include: “Sipping” tequilas, such as Clase Azul and Herradura Seleccion Suprema Extra Anejo; “Specialty” tequilas including La Pinta (pomegranate flavored), Don Miguel Mezcal and Mar Azul (banana tequila); “Reposado,” Antiguo de Herradura & Corzo; “Anejo” tequilas including Herradura and Ria Azul (organic tequila) as well as “Blanco/Silver/Plata” tequilas such as Don Julio Blanco and Casa Noble.

New cocktail selections include:

Ducle Calor served with Habanero Infused Tequila, Cointreau, Cilantro Syrup, Fresh Lime Juice and Orange Bitters

La Sandia mixed with watermelon infused tequila shaken with fresh lime and o3 liquor

Oaxaca made with Herradura Reposado, Pomegranate Tequila, Pom juice, and orange scented honey syrup

Naranja made with orange and cinnamon infused tequila and sweet & sour

Spanish Fly mixed with cherry-vanilla infused rum and Coca-Cola

Dressing a pregnant Lily (Alyson Hannigan) on CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” has not been a challenge for costume designer Reiko Schoenfeld Kurumada.

“For Lily’s look, we’re really trying to keep in Lily’s normal everyday style,” she says. “We’re just getting bigger sizes. It’s cool to mix a maternity jean with a top you could wear if you were pregnant or not.”

Jeans and leggings are the two things Kurumada has purchased for Lily that actually are made for moms-to-be.

“Alyson and I are having so much fun doing our version of maternity wear,” she says. “We just hope we’re showing viewers who are pregnant they can mix and match from their current wardrobe with a few maternity items. That way everyone in this economy is saving money but still feeling fashionable.”

I always heard about Dukes Sports Grill, but never really cared to go, however I decided to check it out. This place is awesome for sports with so many TVs and pool tables. They have great drink specials from 6pm to close with: $4.25 Mimosas and Pina Coladas, $3.25 Fat Tire, and $4 Coors Light pitchers. I had a roast beef melt with pepperjack on sourdough that was heaven!! The staff is super friendly and this place gets packed. My favorite place to go is New China Gate. It is the smallest restaurant you will probably ever go to but it is simply awesome. $1.50 Bud Lights, $2 Heinekens, and $4 sake bombs all day, every day. The gang pang chicken is my favorite item on the menu. The portions are very generous, so come hungry!! Everyone that works there is in the family, except for the bartender; Robby. CRAFT BEER HIDDEN GEMSHere…. There…. Everywhere!!

Every once in a while we like to look for hidden gems. Places that have great beer, but for whatever reason have yet to be fully dis-covered by the beer drinkers in Arizona. Of course, we all know some of the great places to find beer in the Phoenix area. These are all the places that are sup-posed to have good beer. Places like Papago, Taste of Tops, Sun Devil Liquors and all of the great local breweries. Most of you even know that Whole Foods, Sun-flower, Sprouts and AJ’s Fine Foods have great beer selections. You probably even know that the

Whole Foods stores at Mayo and Scottsdale and in Chandler have multi-tap set-ups with some amazing beers running through the lines.

What about those places you wouldn’t expect to have great beer? How about restaurants where you just wouldn’t expect good beer or that really out of the way place? Are there places like that in Arizona that have great beer? I think you know the answer or we wouldn’t be talking about it here. So let’s take a look at some of these hidden gems.

Everybody knows that sushi demands pale lagers, preferably with a Japanese name, even if they are brewed in the United States or

in Canada. Moto, located at 16th Street and Glendale in Phoenix doesn’t buy into that concept. With a menu of fantastic sushi (ask for the underground menu) as well as great noodle and rice dishes, it sounds like a typical su-shi bar. Well, they also have a buf-falo burger and rib eye steak, and something called an Exit Wound bowl (don’t want to know about that). This is one of the few sushi bars that I have ever seen that have been able to pull of an all you can eat sushi deal (on Saturdays) and actually make it work. And beer, they have great beer. Sure you can usually get a Japanese named beer, but check out the other handles. There is typically something from Ballast Point on tap. And, on a fairly regular basis,

they clear off all taps and put on a selection of amazing beers as part of an event. The events are in-credible at Moto. Typically these events start at 4:00pm and go on until close, and will almost always feature at least one rare beer, and they always draw a full house of people enjoying great beer and great company. Most recently they broke out kegs of Avery they had been saving and hosted an Adios to Avery party. Located just of Route 51, they are easy to get to, and you will never leave disap-pointed.

For years TT Roadhouse, located on 68th Street just north of Thom-as was known as a great dive bar. Well, new ownership brought on a new attitude. Don’t worry, it’s still the same Roadhouse you’ve always loved, but now with craft beer. Walk in and look anywhere at the bar. You will find a selec-tion of beer that will make you smile and decide it’s time to settle in for a while. Bell’s Oberon, Ska Modus Hoperandi, Big Sky Moose Drool and a bunch more make this a fine place to relax for an evening, or afternoon, of casual drinking. Shoot some pool, watch a little television or chat up your neighbor at the bar. It’s a com-fortable place to have a few beers, and they have an outstanding juke box.

Cave Creek is all cowboy bars and Mexican restaurants, as far as you know. Sure there are a couple of nice wine bars like Brix. But Cave Creek is also home to some fine dining… Kevin Binkley has his namesake restaurant in town, and Cartwright’s does pretty

NGRAND CANYON BREWING’S BLACK IRON IPA by “King” James Swann

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s get back to the beer reviews and chat about Black Iron IPA from Grand Canyon brewing in Williams Arizona. In the last year, we have covered many different

styles, but never a Local so let’s spend the next couple of weeks sharing the love with breweries from AZ.

Black Iron is a lighter take on the world of IPAs, basically a hoppy session brew. Pouring from the can a light golden straw colour, this little brew has a crisp, citrusy hop aroma that doesn’t quite follow through on the pallet with as much character. Flavours of sweet malt and light bitterness combine on the palate with a medium body and effervescence to make for a refreshing surprise in the IPA category. Think of this brew as the perfect companion for golfing on a hot Arizona day. Rate beer scores this beer a 50 from 100 but I don’t think this score tells the story correctly. At a time when every brewery is going over the top with huge over hopped IPAs, I think Black Iron stands out as a quality everyday drinker. I Love Beer and consume it quite often, but don’t want to wind up piss drunk every time I drink! There is A LOT to be said for session beers and this one hits the mark quite nicely.

Great food pairings should include spicy BBQ wings, summer salads filled with seasonal fruit and marinated chicken or even pork chops with mash. Great Booze pairings include a shot of Jack Daniels and Southern Comfort chilled with lime.

As I said earlier, we’re going to spend the next couple of weeks focusing on locallycrafted Arizona beers. It’s important to note that we have many great breweries right here in the Grand Canyon State, so take the time to give them the attention they deserve. well for itself. What locals have discovered is a relative newcomer named Cave Creek Tap Haus. Located on Cave Creek Road right across from Harold’s, this res-taurant offers a nice menu and Happy Hour usually features some acoustic music with bands later in the evening. But we’re here for the beer, so how about that? It’s pretty good by our standards. While not a top notch beer bar, it’s still a refuge for folks in that part of the Valley to be able to enjoy some great beer with a meal. Green Flash Hop Head Red, Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale, Krombacher Pilsner (the number one selling Pilsner in Germany) and many more grace the handles here.

Did you know that there is a pretty good beer bar in the Old Town Scottsdale area? Well, there are a couple, but the real hidden gem is Daily Dose. From outside it looks like a coffee place…and it is, but with a great menu and well pre-pared food. But take a look at the

tap handles. How about Bell’s Two Hearted, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Alaskan Amber, Big Sky Trout Slayer and Bal-last Point Pale Ale on tap? Looks more like something you would walk into in downtown San Diego. Check out Daily Dose located on the west side of Scottsdale Road just south of Indian School.

Nobody expects to walk into a family chain pizza restaurant and find great beer, but that’s exactly what you get at Mellow Mushroom. A fun environment whether you’re there with the kids or showing up with a group of friends to drink some beer. The bar area is separated from the dining room but is open and well lit. The menu is full of interesting pizzas, sandwiches and salads. And the beer…well Mellow Mush-room features 40 taps, everything craft and import and all of it good. Abita Purple Haze is one of their best selling handles, but you can find Papago Orange Blos-

som, Wyder’s Pear Cider, Grand Canyon Pilsner, Left Hand 400 Pound Monkey and on the nitro-gen tap, its far from the usual, Left Hand Milk Stout served nice and creamy. Mellow Mushroom also has probably the best selection of canned beer available at any restaurant in Phoenix. They have a location in North Phoenix at Happy Valley and I-17 and one on Mill Avenue in Tempe. Look for at least one more to open in 2012.

Our last hidden gem is an old favorite but one that is new to the craft beer scene. George and Dragon has been a fixture on Central Avenue for years. But this English Tavern has started to modernize the tap list. Sure you can still find all the old favor-ites, but check out the Fat Tire tap, and then notice the nitro handle is pouring Left Hand Milk Stout, and then you see SanTan Hefeweizen and Grand Canyon American Pilsner. Wow! George and Dragon has just started their new craft beer program, but with some encouragement from you folks, I bet that we will see this program expand and turn this into a top notch beer bar. Since it is right across from Steele Indian School Park, plan on stopping in before or after the Strong Beer

Festival on February 18th to check it out. Better yet, stop in this weekend and then check it out again in February.

This one may not be a secret any longer but Garage Wine and Tap at 16th and Bethany Home has one of the best lineups you will ever find in a six handle location. Besides their incredible menu and friendly service, you have a selec-tion of beers that includes craft favorites as well as international beers. Order a Thunder Canyon Deep Canyon Amber with your burger, or get adventurous and have a Tripel Karmeliet or Stiegl Goldbrau. Anderson Valley Hop Ottin, SanTan Hefeweizen and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter round out the tap list at this loca-tion.

Every few months we should look at some different hidden gems, because after appearing in these pages they may not be hidden anymore. So whether you’re eating sushi, or in the mood for Bangers and Mash, or just hang-ing out in Old Town, it’s always nice to know that you don’t have to forego craft beer. So now that you know you can enjoy yourself anywhere, get out there and do it.

TEMPE, AZ – Something unique is happening at a strip mall in Tempe. Music fans and rock bands are finding a

home that caters to their every need. The first strip mall devoted to Musicians

and Live Music is coming together piece by piece and it's starting to create a powerful synergy that is getting noticed nationally. CLuB RED / RED OWL is the first piece

of the puzzle. It's a live music venue with a unique dual stage layout that is getting attention around the country. Club Red is located at the SW corner of

university Drive and the 101 Freeway in Tempe. The perfect location, right off the freeway, makes is easy for music fans around the valley to come to shows. Club Red hosts a wide variety of genres: 80s rockers like Quiet Riot, Great White,

Dokken and Firehouse (Firehouse is playing Club Red on Saturday 1/14, get your tickets now, that one will sell out). Punk legends like Agent Orange and X. Alt Rockers Blind Melon, Sugar Cult,

Marcy Playground and Days of the New. Reggae bands such as katchafire, The

Melodians and Pato Banton; hip-hop legends from 2 Live Crew to Brother Ali to the Grouch; and electro artist Bassnectar.Emergent artists on the rise often play

the venue: Adrenaline Mob (with Mike Portnoy) and Allen Stone are two recent examples. Plus local favorites Authority Zero, Digital Summer and Vayden have all played the venue at various times. National touring bands from all over the

country have been raving about the quality of the sound system and the unique dual stage setup and often ask their booking agents to book them at Club Red when their tour brings them through Phoenix.Realizing the potential with an anchor

tenant like Club Red that books around a 1,000 bands a year, the center was renamed Club Red Plaza and has been bringing in music related tenants over the last two years which is now starting to pay off with a strong synergy between the tenants. BAND OASIS, locally owned by James

and Donna koza, is an hourly rehearsal studio for bands. 11 sound isolated rooms each are set up

with a full backline: drum kit, bass amp, guitar amps and mixer. So bands just plug in their guitars and start playing. Over 250 bands a month come by and

practice in these comfortable, fully air conditioned, hourly rehearsal rooms. Bands love the convenience of not hauling

heavy gear around for rehearsals. Band Oasis is open daily from noon to midnight. ROCkZONE RECORDS specializes in

buying and selling used vinyl records.Vinyl records are getting a lot of interest

these days as music fans are realizing that mp3's compress the music, losing lots of the little nuances that matter to serious fans who want the best possible sound quality.

In addition to Vinyl, Rockzone Records also buys and sells CDs, DVDs and Music Memorabilia. Continuing the theme of strong ties to

live music Stephen Wilkensen (the owner of Rockzone) is the drummer in the well known local cover band 68 Guns And the Rockzone GM, Scott Robenet,

worked as a roadie for kiss and has met many bands whose Vinyl he now sells. Rockzone is also well known for buying

large collections. It's not unusual for them to buy collections with hundreds or even thousands of pieces. NAkED DAVE'S MuSIC is a mom and

pop owned guitar store. Walls of electric guitars give musicians a huge choice of the perfect guitar for an upcoming big show.

In addition to the electric guitars, Naked Dave's also carries acoustic guitars, bass guitars, luthier built custom guitars, guitar amps, bass amps, drum kits along with picks, strings, drum sticks and pedals. Dave and Brenda Johnson are the owners

the Weekend

Kokopelli Winery and Bistro is saluting all Italian Americans on January 27 – 29. The festival will include: Home-style Italian

food and desserts, live Italian music all weekend, bocce ball and the Pantera Car Club of Arizona will display their rare Italian made sports cars. Discounted wine tasting and Italian inspired wines by Kokopelli Winery will be featured. Dennis Minchella, Kokopelli’s owner, learned to cook from his Italian-born grandmother Josephine, which helped to inspire many of the weekend’s dishes. Some of our entrees will include: Lavosh style pizzas, Josephine’s Lasagna, Michelangelo Pasta, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Parmesan, Antipasto and Mediterranean Salads. Our desert menu will feature Cannoli ala Sinatra and Coliseum Chocolate Cake, and Italian Cookies and Cream.

Darude at The Mint Before the electronic music sandstorm hit the contemporary clubbing generation we know today, an underground rave scene went rampant with its origin stemming out of Germany—think the movie, Party Monster and maybe you get the context I’m trying to implant in your head. Perhaps such electro dance parties aren’t like that today but understand the impact that music must have had on the attendees. Finnish sensation, Darude, is a product of this scene and member of that generation so I suppose he deserves a little respect for his inspiration and talents. Darude made it big when his 1999 hit, “Sandstorm,” swept to the top of global charts allowing him to secure his spot on DJ Magazine’s top 100 DJs list and remains on it to this day. Not familiar with the song? YouTube it and you’ll recall the fun your brain was having when it first processed it. MLK Jr. weekend is here again which means if you’re not go-ing out of town, you’ll need something to do on Sunday night. The Mint is still fresh in Scottsdale and will be even cooler this weekend when Darude spins for their In-dustry Appreciation Night and makes you feel like you’re clubbing somewhere fancy in Europe. While you’re there, consider the Ketel One bottle special ($150) and $5 Ketel One cocktails you can enjoy more knowing there’s no work the following day. Sunday, January 15th. 9 pm – 2 am. Ages 21+

Avicii at the Phoenix Convention Center Oh, those Europeans and their electronic dance music! If you’re a true clubber, you know about Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, and Afrojack. There has to be something they eat, drink, or smoke in The Netherlands that makes these Dutch DJs as great and influential as they are right now in the mu-sic world. Avicii, on the other hand, is not Dutch but rather springs from one half of Europe’s ball sack and hails from the same motherland as The Swedish House Mafia. This Grammy Award Nominated 22 year old’s current biggest hit, Levels, is currently on repeat on my iPod and being blasted all over the radio thanks to Flo Rida’s sampling of it. Ohhhohhhh some-times, I get a good feeling! Yup, that’s the jam! I always get a good feeling when it comes on lalala [smiley face]. So if you’re down (and you should be because I think most everyone got paid on Friday), head over to the Phoenix Convention

Center this Sunday for Avicii’s House for Hunger tour to help him raise a million for the organization, Feeding America. Jay and Silent Bob Get Old at Stand Up Live Jay and his sidekick, Silent Bob, are back. You’ve seen them in movies, Clerks, Chas-ing Amy, Mallrats, and Dogma and this time I’m sure, Kevin Smith a.k.a Silent Bob, will actually say more than a few words if anything. Maybe. Anyhow, Jason Mewes and his longtime friend are in town on Thursday to entertain us once again and we’ll have the chance to judge them on how well they’ve aged. Or perhaps they’ve aged horribly and are holding on to the past and that’s why they’re doing standup now? Phoenix Cityscape’s new comedy club is pretty darn cool, though. The venue is on the second floor and is somewhat fan-cy for a comedy club. Copper House Rock Pub and Kitchen is connected to Stand Up Live and wraps around half the space with windows overlooking downtown, making you feel like you’re actually in a bigger city. Although there is a two drink minimum at the club, the liquid refreshments are tasty and the food you can snack on while you watch the show is delicious. If the talent is not so talented—which I’m sure it will be, at least you can feel satisfied with the food and beverage. Thursday, January 12th. 8 pm. $40. Ages 18+

Zombie games have been done to death ... well, maybe to undeath. It’s a genre that has seen massive success thanks to the likes of “Resident Evil” and “Left 4 Dead,” as creepy tales and shocking scares are woven around some brilliant, high-end gameplay. * July 16, 2004: Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison (and five months of house

arrest) for a stock sale. According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Stewart avoided a loss of $45,673 by selling all 3,928 shares of her

ImClone Systems stock on December 27, 2001, after receiving material, nonpublic information

from Peter Bacanovic, who was Stewart’s broker at Merrill Lynch.

Martha Helen Stewart (née Kostyra), is an American business magnate, media personality, author, and magazine publisher and founder of

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She has gained success through her intelligence, perseverance, simply put; her pure resolve to bring to fruition

her visions.

On the cover of the May 1995 issue, New York Magazine declared her as “the definitive American

woman of our time”.

Although the media widely speculated that the situation would effectively be the end of her media

empire, Stewart began a comeback campaign in 2005, with her company returning to profitability

the following year.

In the months that followed, Stewart drew heavy media scrutiny, including a Newsweek cover

headlined “Martha’s Mess”. Notably on June 25, 2002, CBS anchor Jane Clayson grilled Stewart on the air about ImClone during her regular segment on The Early Show. Stewart continued chopping cabbage and famously quipped, “I just want to

focus on my salad”.

While in confinement, she took a job and became an informal liaison between the administration

and her fellow inmates. The People special, Scandals! That Rocked America stated “Some

expected America’s goddess of domestic perfection to fall into terminal despair. Instead, with the drive that would make her a billionaire, Stewart took her

lemon of a sentence and made lemonade. Heck, she made a lemon soufflé.”
