To be eligible, you must be an active Member in good standing and will be required to submit proof of achievement and a receipt for payment of the examination fee.

If you are interested in learning more about the new SHRM certifications, we will be holding a brief Q&A session prior to the start of the December chapter meeting on December 10.

5 New Year Resolutions for the Workplace ~Cube Farm, by: Never Grow Up So what’s a New Year Resolution you ask? Well, it’s a To Do List for the first week of January. Every year, we promise to live to them and then somewhere around the second week, we forget all about them. What ? You haven’t made one yet? Fear not. You have not been left behind. Here’s a small list (with a twist) to get you started. Something that we hope will help make your work life better.

I will conspire to create. Next year, focus your energies on inspiring others with your enthusiasm. Share ideas. Make 2014 a year of creation. Being proactive and showing initiative helps. Unless of course you believe that the reward for work well done is more work.

I will not bite into that deep dish extra crunchy pizza. This year, resolve to eat healthy and become fit. Our work lives are stressful enough and quite often, we tend to binge. In fact, a lot of our cravings for food work more as anti-depressants. Don’t agree? Well think again. Specifically about the juicy burger (with extra cheese) you ate at 11:30 p.m. while returning from home and decided to top up your chocolate milk shake with cream.

Montgomery County Council Unanimously Enacts ‘Ban the Box’ Law

Law Addresses When Certain Employers Can Ask Applicant About Criminal Background During Job Application Process

Montgomery County is the latest jurisdiction to “Ban the Box”. The new law goes into affect on January 1, 2015, and it applies to employers with more than 15 full time employees in the county.

According to Montgomery County Council Press Releases and Statements:

Bill 36-14 would delay the point at which an employer in the County can inquire into the crim-inal history of an applicant for a job in the County until the conclusion of the first interview. It makes exceptions for any positions currently required by state or federal law to have com-

pleted background checks, like childcare workers, teachers, and those working with vulnerable populations. The bill would require an employer who intends to rescind a conditional job offer based on an applicant's arrest or conviction record to: • Provide the applicant or employee with a copy of any criminal record report. • Notify the applicant of the intention to rescind the offer and state the items that are the basis for the in-tention to rescind the offer. • Give an applicant who finds false information or mistaken identity in the report provided an opportunity to respond with evidence proving the mistake within seven days.
