NEW OPPORTUNITIES

We have a new special issue of MosBuild Magazine Building&Architecture to set the stage for the second week of the MosBuild exhibition. This issue presents top companies, unique

building materials, contemporary architecture projects, prominent industry figures and key events – in short, everything you need to build a successful business in today's market.

The world forces us to adapt to its constant changes by broadening our horizons and being flexible and open to innovations. Every paradigm shift is an opportunity to uncover new prospects, as those who want to develop look for opportunities, and those who don't look for excuses.

Right now, for example, professionals have the chance to take part in government tenders for the construction of hotel complexes, airports and infrastructure for the FIFA World Cup in 2018. Modernising production processes, adopting cutting-edge technologies and management solutions, as well as minimising construction times allow firms to significantly reduce costs and create a platform for growth.

A positive professional reputation is also important for creating a stable business, and reputations are formed through real-life experience. Being a company that business partners and clients can trust and providing quality products and services help create a positive brand image.

For over 20 years MosBuild has been a platform for fostering business links. Hundreds of companies are long-term partners of MosBuild, many of which have been taking part in the exhibition for over 10 years. MosBuild presents reliable, stable companies that honour their commitments to business partners. The calibre of our participants is one of the main reasons why MosBuild continues to be Russia's leading building industry event of international importance.

MosBuild's Building & Architecture Week will run from 14 to 17 April 2015. See you at Expocentre!

GOLD Aluminium offers the most sophisticated methods for manufacturing aluminium profiles in line with global standards that meet today's demands for value, quality, reliability, durability and safety.

Cobiax technology replaces the concrete inside reinforced concrete slabs. This reduces the volume of concrete mix by up to 35%, lessens the weight of the building, reduces expenses for reinforcement steel and simplifies the foundation structure, which considerably lowers the overall cost of the building.

A new product for smoothing walls: an aluminium plaster screed rule made from corrosion-resistant material. It prevents rust developing underneath finishing materials and possesses a high degree of rigidity.

Made inJAPAN

Building materials with the “Made in Japan” label have rightly earned their popularity on the global market.

At the start of the 1980s, two independent compa-nies – Kubota Corporation and Panasonic – began pro-ducing facade panels. In 2003 manufacturing company Kubota Corporation and the owner of the Panasonic brand agreed to merge their building exterior divisions, creating an entirely new enterprise named Kubota Matsushitadenko Exterior Works.

Since its creation, Kubota Matsushitadenko Ex-terior Works has been a top supplier of building and finishing materials on the global market and in 2010 it was renamed KMEW.

Today KMEW is continuing its research and devel-opment, implementing state-of-the-art technology and design ideas in the production of its quality products.

12

BUILDING&ARCHITECTURE | 14 - 17 APRIL 2015

Page 13: MosBuild Magazine. Building&Architecture EN

One of the standout features of KMEW products is the rich variety of colours and textures, which offers limitless design pos-sibilities for building facades, from classic Japanese to contemporary European styles. KMEW panels create ventilated facades that are long-lasting and robust. For the Russian market, KMEW supplies facade panels that have been specially designed for harsh cli-mates and severe temperature variations.

KMEW stakes its reputation on the dura-bility and eco-friendliness of its products. As part of this approach, it has developed an en-tire range of coatings for fibre cement panels.

KMEW's unique ceramic coating protects the panels against the harmful impact of en-vironmental factors. The hydrophilic ceramic coating facilitates self-cleaning when it rains and preserves the vibrancy of colours for over 40 years.

The latest innovation from KMEW is pho-toceramic coating, which not only creates a self-cleaning facade with vibrant, last-ing colour, but also cleans the environment, breaking down the nitric and sulphuric acid contained in exhaust fumes.www.kmew.ruPavilion 8, Hall 2, Stand U225

In 2015 KMEW is launching a new product that has been specially designed for Russia: Seradir V 14 mm thick high-rise panels that can be installed with con-cealed supports. Instead of silicone, which is ideal for low-rise buildings, KMEW has developed a new connecting strip to match the panel colour, blending seamlessly with the building facade. New Seradir V facade panels are cost-effective and provide a styl-ish finish.

Construction has been completed on the Fondation Louis Vuitton in the Bois de Boulogne (Paris, France). This latest project from architect Frank Gehry has already garnered the BIM (Business Information Model) Award for Excellence conferred by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Gehry Technologies is a global leader in the application of cutting-edge technologies for the design of unconventional structures. Its innovative production processes have shown that large teams can work simultaneously on 3D design and construction projects. 15 teams scattered across the globe worked on the Fondation Louis Vuitton project (totalling over 400 people, including aviation engineers). CNC was used to produce 19,000 unique components of moulded glass, reinforced concrete and 3,500 curvilinear moulded glass pieces. The building’s walls are clad in fibre cement, while glue-laminated timber beams secure the glass structures. The use of glass as a fundamental exterior material plays a key role in linking the museum’s architecture to its natural surroundings.

NEW LEASE Of LIfEArchitect Yoshihiro Amanо completely transformed this old office block in Tokyo (Japan) into an ultramodern building – Dear Jingumae. The highly memorable facade offers something new from every vantage point and enhances the building’s commercial appeal.

The new facade was developed using computer design: a host of metallic louvres connecting three-dimensionally misaligned radiuses and straight lines. This placement of the facade panels enhances the dynamism of the building, conjuring the image of soft clothing rippling in movement. The facade structure is held together by SUS pipes. The metal panels actually function as blinds, diffusing the bright light that enters the building.

The striking aesthetic of the facade has significantly increased the profitability of this office building and demonstrated the virtually limitless possibilities that exist when modernising old architecture.

PIONEERING APPROACHArchitecture studio MVRDV designed the Markthal covered market with combined residential complex and parking in Rotterdam (Netherlands). Markthal represents a wholly new solution in architecture: the simplicity of its form is offset by its reflective glass facades, while the bright and large-scale paintwork creates a festive feel.

The total area of the complex is 78,000 m2. The Markthal building itself is made up of an enormous arch that is 40 metres high, 120 metres long and 70 metres wide. The arch contains 228 apartments including 24 penthouses. All of the living areas have windows on the arch’s exterior, while kitchens and storage spaces look onto the market itself. Apartments are shielded from the noise and smells of the busy market by triple-glazing in windows and floor openings. The building’s flanks are completely transparent, allowing natural light to flood the cavernous space. A cable net facade serves as the framework for the glass. The interior surface of the arch is encased in perforated aluminium panels and covered with an 11,000 m2 “living” painting. The building has already been awarded a BREEAM Very Good rating for energy efficiency.

The La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science is located at the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University, one of Australia’s oldest education institutions. The winning design for the prestigious project came from Australian architectural firm Lyons, and reflects the cutting-edge work and innovative teaching methods of the Institute, where the learning process feeds organically into scientific research.

The building’s uniqueness stems from its structurally varied facades and honeycomb configuration resembling cells or molecules. Besides its compelling “molecular” structure, the building is perfectly designed to meet the needs of a busy site of learning and research, allowing students and scientists to move easily between lecture halls, labs and common areas.

The ground floor hosts lecture rooms for students in years one to three – these larger, more open labs are ideal for instructing large cohorts. The three upper levers of the building are allocated for scientific research and can be adapted to suit the number of participants in research teams. These floors also contain a range of common areas, such as a large conference hall and rooms for informal meetings between students and lecturers. The building’s design is seamlessly integrated into the adjoining LIMS block.

The tessellated exterior hints at the work being carried out inside its walls. The multi-coloured periphery of the window hexagons follows through into the building proper, connecting the exterior and interior space. The cellular concept also mentally primes students and researchers arriving at the Institute for the groundbreaking work ahead of them.

fRITTED fACADESIn 2014 work was completed on the Allianz complex on the edge of Zurich’s business district (Switzerland). The project was handled by Wiel Arets Architects. The complex comprises one 20-storey and two 5-storey buildings connected by several multi-storey bridges.

The building epitomises 21st century business culture, which demands flexible design of working environments and the intelligent use of space, such as providing multiple routes through a site to help reduce overall foot traffic. The café and restaurant is situated on the fifth floor rather than the lobby, creating an essential buffer zone between the public and private areas. The conference rooms located on the lower floors are for use by external clients. This new district’s master plan mandates that all building facades be composed of natural stone, so the architects chose Spanish Onyx marble for the partitions and aluminium facade panels. These panels consist of “fritted” sheets, creating a 3D pattern that imitates the veins in marble. The panels also help control the light level in rooms and can react to external light levels using a computer algorithm.

The Dr Chau Chak Wing Building is the first building in Australia to be designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. The building is the flagship facility of Sydney’s University of Technology and serves as a physical example of the innovative thinking in teaching and research that takes place at the university.

Gehry believes that architectural structures “grow from the inside out, like branches on a tree”, meaning that room interiors should be designed before the external facade.

The exterior of the building employs two distinct but linked architectural solutions: the eastern side possesses a brick facade that ripples like fabric, while the western side is composed of shards of glass that reflect the surrounding cityscape. These contrasting materials connect modern Sydney with its “bricks and mortar” past.

The complex’s exterior also functions as a sculptural form revealed through its materials.

The “living” brick cladding of reinforced plates is a technical innovation from Gehry Partners. Five types of brick were developed for the project, as well as special stepped masonry to create the curved facades. The play of colour in different light levels and the protruding bricks accentuate the fluidity of the facade and give the entire structure a sense of ephemeral lightness.

WOODEN SKYSCRAPERA new addition to the vertiginous skyline of Chicago may be on the horizon – Big Wood. This conceptual design for a wooden skyscraper is the brainchild of American architect Michael Charters.

Steel and concrete have long been the go-to construction materials for tall buildings, but the production of these materials is extremely energy inefficient and is accompanied by the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. Recent research has confirmed the viability of building multi-storey wooden structures. This means construction strategies that are more intelligent and environmentally friendly.

Big Wood is a multi-purpose university complex comprising accommodation, shops, parking, a public park and garden, a tree nursery and timber yard. And when it comes to fire safety, wood holds its own against concrete and brick: special fire retardant treatments ensure that wood is safe and secure.

The Agora Theatre (Netherlands) is a brightly coloured and quirky building designed by UNStudio where functionality meets the world of fantasy. Here the architecture is an active component of the theatre as a whole and is in constant dialogue with the viewer. The interior and exterior walls are faceted like a kaleidoscope, blurring the boundary between reality and fantasy.

The theatre space, studios, foyers, numerous dressing rooms, café and restaurant are all contained within the borders of a single volume that “protrudes” in various directions. This also allows for the seamless incorporation of the technical block containing the stage machinery. The faceted walls also fulfil an acoustic function.

The vibrant and intense colours optically change from violet, crimson and cherry to almost white. A handrail resembling a pink ribbon winds its way down the main staircase. The architecture of the Agora achieves its goal of heightening sensations and inspiring creativity.

RODIN'SLEGACYThe Rodin Museum in Brazil is a visual master class in integrating historical heritage and contemporary architecture. This 19th century colonial-style villa was restored and extended with new structures. Innovative technology and materials help unite centuries of culture in a single project, preserving history and supplementing it with fresh ideas.

This combining of influences is characteristic of Rodin's work as an Impressionist sculptor, innovator, painter and artisan stone cutter.

Natural stone is as relevant today as it has been throughout human history. Each mineral possesses its own unique properties and appearance. Strength and resistance to temperature and environmental impact are qualities inherent to natural stone. Products made from stone stand the test of time, retaining their exceptional characteristics.

Rodin humbly described working with stone as “chopping off” whatever he did not need, but this art and craft is undoubtedly the source of priceless treasures that will in turn be our cultural legacy.

been created for the DNK project: in Vladivostok on Russky Island, Sergey Tchoban and Sergey Glubokin from SPEECH architectural bureau are striving to create one such inspiring space. The architects based their design on the dome-like dwellings of the far north. The result is two expansive dome structures connected by a glass lobby. The external facade of the main buildings presents a tiered structure, clad in

metal and finished in energy-efficient glass. Wooden laminated structures serve as load-bearing elements inside the domes, preserving the aesthetic unity of the space.

One of the project’s main challenges lies in the efficient use of the internal space of the domes. Light-filled, multifunctional halls take up the centre of the sphere, while the outside perimeter is divided up into

compact rooms for teaching in small groups. Exciting solutions were devised for the tops of the domes: in the small dome this space has been used to create a 264-seat hall, while the large dome has three levels of classrooms connected by a spiral ramp.

The central component of the large dome’s interior is the fire – a timeless symbol of unity. The contemporary open fireplace is made from glass and

metal and is surrounded by broad wooden steps, forming a welcoming space for fireside learning.

The Russky Island project will be one of the first links in the chain of DNK centres. It is being implemented as part of a range of projects aimed at boosting education and science in all of Russia’s regions and creating more equal living conditions between those in central and more remote regions.

ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIMENTS

One of the innovations to emerge from Sergey Estrin’s studio in 2014 was the architectural look for the interior of one of the Moscow City towers. In what has come to be the studio’s trademark, the interior displays an innovative use of material and a unique sense of form. The ceiling of the common areas of

the business centre features a two-layer finish of “dripping” panels along the walls. This streamlined shape is accompanied by concealed lighting, completing the space’s unconventional feel. The fluid contours continue in the floor coverings and decor of the reception areas. Natural wood tones were

This private sports hall near Moscow was designed by Atrium architectural bureau and embodies the concept of ergonomic architecture. Project designers Anton Nadtochii, Vera Butko and Dmitry Khudenkikh created a multi-purpose 1700 m2 facility, giving it a contemporary form and feel.

The centre of the whole structure is the sports hall, built under an arching ceiling with a 9.6 metre-high beam. One flank of the translucent facade is fixed to the ground, while the other leans against

a slanted glass wall. The complex construction of the upper structure is held together along smoothly curving arches of laminated wood. Insulating ETFE cushions are fixed to the frame, offering three degrees of transparency. The darkest section is located above the arch and the material becomes more transparent lower down, forming a bright, half-covered terrace.

The multi-purpose hall is designed for a host of sporting activities, from basketball and tennis to wrestling. The complex also offers catering facilities

for events, with a dedicated kitchen and separate entrance. Other storage facilities are located around the hall, creating an asymmetric composition.

The malleability of the components and unique materials used have set the tone for this striking space. The new project represents the next logical step in Atrium’s creative journey, displaying its signature style of open plan spaces, curved surfaces and the interplay of 3D structures.

GATEWAYTO THE SKIES

One of the latest projects from Asadov Architectural Bureau is the Central Airport in Saratov – the first complex of this level to be constructed from scratch by Russian experts in line with international standards.

The new airport building has an almost square shape with two stationary air bridges on one side. The foundations of the adjoining structures, located at an angle to the runway, create the appearance of an aeroplane fuselage.

The unusual construction of the facades is stitched together from a metal framework of glass and vertical rails”

The project designers are architects A. Asadov, K. Shepeta, E. Didorenko, as well as T. Lebedeva and Yu. Shaletri who oversaw the construction of the airport's walls. The service doors on the side facade are carefully hidden by a semi-arch leading into the air bridge. The space below the arch is concealed by slanting beams. The airport's transparent facades on the airfield and main entrance sides bow inward: this concave form is accentuated by the protruding canopy. Particular attention has been paid to the

multi-layered roof. Above the main area for general passenger traffic, a space has been carved out in the shape of an hourglass "filled" with oval skylights. In this way, these skyward-looking "lenses" not only make the interior as bright as possible, but also form the main axis of the airport structure.

The fluid contours of Saratov Airport mirror the sandbars of the city's river and the smooth silhouette of the bridge over the Volga, while the curvature of the main facades hints at the famous Saratov accordion.

Passive House is a voluntary standard for the construction of energy efficient buildings with low energy requirements. A passive house provides comfortable living conditions, energy savings and has minimal impact on the environment.

In order for a building to meet the standard’s requirements, it is necessary at the design stage to address the following five areas: insulation, the absence of any thermal bridges in enclosing structures, efficient windows certified as suitable for a passive house, air tightness, and the presence of a mechanical ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery.

Today over 50,000 passive buildings have been built across the globe in various climate conditions. These include apartment blocks and detached houses, hotels, schools, kindergartens,

office buildings, sports centres and churches. One of the most successful examples of a new building that meets the passive house standard is in Ludwigshafen, Germany – the Lu-Teco office building. The workplace of 550 people, the building has an energy dependent area of 9823 m² and its specific heating demand is less than 15 kWh/m²/year. Construction was completed in 2007.

Its foundations, external walls and solid concrete cladding create an airtight shell around the building. The airtightness of the external walls is created thanks to internal plastering.

Particular attention has been paid to the air tightness of the wall and window connections due to the large window area – 2700 m2. After the windows were installed and before the first finishes were applied, a blower door test was performed. 39

geothermal probes (95m deep) serve as the building's primary energy source. Heat pumps are used to heat the building in winter and heat exchangers are used in summer for air conditioning together with the geothermal probes. The ventilation system bears part of the heating load. Heat gains from the sun and internal heat release also play a role in the building's heat balance. In the event of overheating, a shading system is activated (blinds). In extreme summer temperatures, cooling via the ground is combined with standard split systems with a back-up cooling system on the roof.

The flat roof is also equipped with 512 m2 of PV solar panels with peak capacity of 69 kW. They produce approximately 63,900 kWh annually. Annual savings on heating are estimated at 200,000 litres of fuel or €117,000.

The Passive House Standard is now moving towards broader application in the mass building sector due to the development of highly efficient building materials and technologies suitable for constructing passive buildings. There are currently various solutions for energy-efficient individual construction and smart engineering systems on the market.

Quality design and thorough planning of structural connections are vital for building passive houses that satisfy the requirements for the external thermal envelope and technical solutions. This is why architects and designers are required to undergo training and pass an examination to become a Certified Passive House Designer. While the cost of building a passive house may be slightly higher than for a similar conventional building, once commissioned it offers a host of significant benefits.

To meet the requirements for a passive house, a building must have an optimised thermal envelope and comply with the main rules for a thermal bridge free design:

1. Absence of any thermal bridges – if possible there should be no openings in the thermal envelope2. Heat insulation – if openings in the thermal envelope cannot be entirely eliminated, then the heat-transfer resistance in these areas must be increased as much as possible3. Connection – placement of insulation in the joins of structural elements should not leave any gaps4. Geometry – choose edges with blunt angles

French architect Jean Nouvel has created a wonderful synthesis of man-made and natural beauty. His design for the “green” skyscraper One Central Park in Sydney (Australia) was named the best tall building of 2014 by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

Nouvel’s 117-metre high skyscraper consists of two adjoining towers and includes over 600 apartments, shops, cafés, a cinema and – most strikingly of all – 64,000 m2 of lush greenery. The steel and concrete framework is cloaked in 190 species of Australian and 160 species of exotic plants chosen by botanist Patrick Blanc, an expert on creating vertical gardens. The living plants cover 50 % of the facade and are designed to complement the greenery of the neighbouring park.

Vertical gardens are cultivated in an artificial soil-free environment and are nourished by rainwater. Sunlight for the plants and for partially heating the building interior is captured by a unique 110-tonne steel construction of heliostats extending like an umbrella between the two towers.

One Central Park is currently the largest and most ambitious vertical garden project in the world. Nouvel’s tower forms part of the major Sustainable Sydney 2030 project, which aims to transform the city into one of the world’s best “green” cities for living.

The skyscraper is a vertical homage to its famous New York namesake
