Sail

A lone white sail shows for an instantWhere gleams the sea, an azure streak? What left it in its homeland distant? In alien parts what does it seek? The billow play, the mast bends creaking,The wind, impatient, moans and sighs...It is not joy that it is seeking,Nor is it happiness it flies.

The blue wave dance, they dance and tremble,The sun’s bright ray caresses the seas. And yet for storm it begs, the rebel,As if in storm lurked calm and peace!..Translated by I.Zheleznova

The DudukThe duduk (or doo-dook), is a woodwind instrument indigenous to Armenia. Unlike other double reed instruments, such as the oboe or shawm, the duduk has a very large reed in proportion to its size.

The unflattened reed and completely cylindri-cal (not conical) body of the instrument produce a sound closer to that of a clarinet or saxophone than to more commonly known double-reeds.

UNESCO proclaimed the Armenian duduk and its music as a Mas-terpiece of the Intangi-ble Heritage of Humani-ty in 2005 and inscribed it in 2008.

The duduk music has used in a number of American and others films, most notably in Gladiator.

Variations of it exist in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, including the bal-aban in Azerbaijan and Iran.

Armenian musicologists cite evidence of the duduk’s use as early as 1200 BC, though Western scholars suggest it is 1,500 years old.

The history of the Armeni-an duduk music is dated to the reign of the Armenian king Tigran the Great, who reigned from 95–55 B.C.
