Labour Day in Russia Labour Day in Russia is cel-ebrated on May 1st. Interestingly enough; it has been called many different names in Russia. This hol-iday is often referred to as Pervomay, May 1st. and The celebration of the Spring and Labour Day. Its official name is International Work-ers’ Solidarity Day.

Do you know when Labour Day started to be celebrat-ed?

On May 1, 1886, American workers in Chicago organ-ized a strike demanding an 8-hour working day.

The police broke up the strike and the demonstra-tion.

A few decades passed be-fore the beginning of the Labour Day celebration in Russia.

In July 1889 the Paris Congress of Internation-al II decided to hold annual demonstrations on May 1st in commemoration of the Chicago strike, thus cele-brating International Work-ers’ Solidarity Day.

Later it became an official holiday in many countries. Labour Day in Russia has been legally observed since 1917. In the former Soviet Union it was one of the major hol-idays and was celebrated with official parades, organ-ized street demonstrations, and marches in many Rus-sian cities.

On Labour Day in Russia workers carried banners with slogans such as “Peace, La-bour, May!” For a long time this holiday was a symbol of the revolution.

Today in Russia it’s a non-working day and is pretty much just associated with the start of spring.

The opening of the summer season in the Hermitage Garden

This year’s spring-sum-mer season in the garden “Hermitage” opens a large sweets festival. A real treat for the sweet tooth will be the original desserts, can-dies and lots of natural chocolate.

Opening of summer season in Muzeon Park

Park of Arts “Muzeon” opens the summer season by a French multimedia the-atre performance by Luc Amoros. This show is a kind of mix of surrealist theatre, painting, live music, dance and elements of magic.

This show will be held in Russia for the first time.

The performance “White paper” is about the aesthet-ic of modern cities.

The performance on itself on “scaffolding”, and the role of the Workers’ will be taken by the Amoros’ team. Their task in a fairly short period of time to build a real art object.

However, for this they do not need to lay bricks, against the background of each of the actors plays a role. In the eyes of the audience the performance-constructors will represent a whole mural

or an original comics. And so no one will get bored on the presentation, the actors will entertain the guests of the theatre with dances and songs.

At the end of the show you will see the original painting, created with a compilation of light, colour and music.

The park “Sokolniki” is ac-tively preparing for the sum-mer season. This year, more than 70 ser-vices will delight guests of the park. The beginning of the summer season will mark the opening of the summer cinema “Pioneer”, which will be located away from noisy places. About 300 people will be able to visit the the-atre and enjoy movies as in 3D, as well in a classic way.

“Pioneer” is built on the site of an historic theatre, that worked in the park in 70-80th. The new theatre will run from May to October and will give to the audience not only the long-awaited premiere, but also popular films of the past years. In addition, on that day will be held on-site lectures, mas-ter classes, concerts and theatrical performances for children and adults. In sum-mer in addition will be open a children’s creative centre.

The opening of the summer season in Sokolniki Park

Another important change will be the restoration of the main entrance to the park, recreating the architecture of the 30s.

Circular benches will be in-stalled in 4 circles. The new design is ideally accentuate by original night lighting.

Central flower beds of the park will be changed on interesting “vintage style” ones. Especially for the event they were remodelled in the 50s style and even the plants are from the 50th. As well as the design will lightly talk to you about the past land-shaft styles, as it’s reconstructed from historical sketches.

The opening of the s u m m e r season at VDNKHSummer season official-ly opens on May 1 in the VDNKH complex. On that day guests of the festival can ride a bike or roller skates that will be possible to rent, or make a work out in the open sports grounds or visit a concert in the Green Theater.

And for lovers of reading are created special “Relax read-ing Rooms” where you can relax with one the five thou-sand books available there.

Younger guests will like the “Urban Farm” where all year round you will find usual farm animals like bulls, cows and chickens.

Young Naturalists will be ac-quainted with rare species of plants and vegetables in a huge greenhouses, there is even allowed to feed the fish.

Those who are in lack of extreme may be the first to visit the rope park Skytown: find there 93 trails, located on a 15-meter height.

Exhibition Life Zone

A two-storey labyrinth of interactive installations, video and sound art where the viewer can, coming into contact with any of the ele-ments, change the “sound” of the whole exhibition. The exhibition Life Zone is ex-tended until May 31!

Centre for Contemporary Art M’ARS completely chang-es the concept of it’s work, moving into the actively de-veloping media art. The first draft of the “renewal” of the centre is the exhibition Life Zone.

Life Zone (or “zone of life”) is a term used by astrono-mers to describe the field of space, the most suitable for life. Artists participating in the project reflect on the theories of origin of the uni-verse and encourages the viewer to actively partici-pate.

Eight halls of the two-story expo space M’ARS will be filled by media art works by Alexander Letsiusom (video artist, author of media in-stallations in the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg), Maxim Svishchev, Sergei Kuryokhin (laureate and member of the parallel pro-gram “manifesto”), Andrea Svibovichem (author of the project PoliarPoliar and par-ticipant of the festival

“Electromechanics”) and other interesting figures of contemporary culture.

Interactive media maze Life Zone is built by the princi-ple as dominoes, where only one change in only one el-ement will result in a chain reaction.

Once upon a time, on the is-land of Buyan, there stood a small tumble-down cottage; and in that cottage dwelt an old man and woman. They lived in great poverty.

The old man would cast his net and try to catch some fish; but all he caught was barely enough to keep body and soul together each day. One day the old man cast his net, began to haul it in and felt something heavy in it; never had he felt the like before. He could hardly pull it in. Yet when he looked he saw the net was empty: except for a little fish. But it was no ordinary fish? it was golden. And it spoke in a hu-man voice, “Don’t take me, old man! Let me go back to the deep blue sea and I’ll be useful to you: I’ll do whatev-er you wish”. The old man set to thinking, then said, “I need nothing from you: go back and swim in the sea”.

He threw the golden fish into the sea and turned for home. The old woman asked him how much he had caught. “Nothing but a single golden fish, and that I threw back into the sea”, he said. “It spoke in a human voice: ‘Let me go,’ it said, ‘into the deep blue sea and I’ll do whatever you wish.’ I was sorry for it,

“What do you need, old man?” it asked. “The old woman gives me no peace,” he said. “She’s gone raving mad: she’s tired of being a fisherman’s wife, she wants to be a fine lady”. “Very well, cheer up. Go home and say your prayers; all will be done”.So the old man went home and was surprised to see a big stone house in place of his hut, rising up three floors; with servants run-ning about in the yard, cooks in the kitchen, and his old woman sitting on a high chair in a rich brocade dress, giving orders. “Hel-lo, wife”, the old man said. “What impudence!” the brocaded lady cried. “How dare you address me, a fine lady, as your wife. Servants! Take that silly old dolt to the stables and give him forty lashes till he’s sore”.

Right away the servants came running in, seized the old man by the scruff of the neck and hauled him off to the stables. There he got such a thrashing that he could barely stand. After that the old woman made him her yardman; he was given a broom to sweep the yard and made to eat and drink in the kitchen. What a life the old man led:

all day sweeping out the yard, and if he missed a speck of dust he was hauled off to the stables for a whip-ping. “What a witch!” he thought. “I bring her good fortune, and she sticks her nose in the air, doesn’t even consider me her husband.”By and by the old wom-an grew tired of being a fine lady, had the old man brought to her and ordered him, “Go back to the golden fish, you old devil, and tell it this: I don’t want to be the Governor’s Lady, after all; I want to be the Queen.” So the old man went down to the sea and called, “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea, and your head facing me.” Up swam the golden fish, asking, “What do you need, old man?”

“My old woman has gone even further round the bend; she doesn’t want to be a fine lady, she wants to be the Queen.” “Cheer up,” said the fish. “Go home and say your prayers; all will be done.” So the old man returned and instead of his former home saw a towering palace with a roof of gold; guardsmen with rifles marched up and down; behind the palace were elegant gardens, while in front was a big green meadow on which troops were parading. The old woman, all dressed up like a queen, appeared on the balcony with her generals and governors, and began to inspect her troops and take the salute.


But what was the use? If he didn’t go he’d lose his head!

So, reluctantly he went down to the sea and called, “Fish, oh fish! Stand with your tail on the sea and your head facing me”. But this time no golden fish appeared. The old man called it once more? and again no fish. He called it a third time? and sudden-ly the sea began to mur-mur and seethe. Where the waters bad been clear and blue, they were now black as pitch. Up swam the fish to the shore, asking, “What do you need, old man?” “The old woman has gone even madder”, he said. “She’s tired of being the Queen and wants to be the Mistress

of the Sea, ruling all the wa-ters, commanding all the fish”.

The golden fish said nothing to the old man, just turned tail and vanished into the depths.

The old man went back and could scarce believe his eyes: the palace had gone, and in its place stood a small tumble-down cottage.

And inside the cottage sat his old woman in a ragged sarafan. They began to live as before. The old man set ! about his fishing, but no matter how often he cast his net into the sea, never again.

The drums went bang and the music rang and the sol-diers shouted “Hurrah”.By and by the old wom-an grew tired of being the Queen. She ordered a search for the old man so that she might set eyes on him again. What a fuss there was! The generals buzzed about, the governors huffed and puffed. ‘What old man could she mean?’ Finally he was found in the back yard and brought before the Queen. “Listen, you old devil”, the woman said. “Go to the golden fish and tell it this: I don’t want to be the Queen any more, I want to be the Mistress of the Sea, so that all the seas and all the fish obey me”. The old man tried to object.
