Empowering your lifestyleTWENTY years ago, not many would consider an SUV when looking for a new vehicle.Back then, SUVs were considered as the workhorse for architects and construction contractors.

Despite the existence of the reconditioned Honda CR-Vs and Toyota RAV-4 (Honda later brought the CR-V in as an official import), the car-based SUVs were still considered expensive and a worse fuel-guzzler than sedans.

Fast forward a few years, car-based SUVs are now considered a must-have for all car companies.

In fact, the SUVs are so popular that the traditional C-segment car players are not seeing any improvement in its market share.

The current SUV models are smaller in size.

Traditionally, the SUVs were based on C-segment cars such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and

Mitsubishi AS-X. There are also SUVs based

on B-segment cars such as the Ford EcoSport and Peugeot 2008. They sport a cute look and are alternatives to small hatchbacks

for those who are looking for something different.

These are usually crossovers, meaning that despite their large frame, they run on front wheels like their hatchback counterparts.

This is appropriate for owners who do not need it to be a 4WD for venturing into the wild and off-roads.

The 2WD system also offers lower fuel consumption and more power than their normally smaller-sized engine counterparts.

There are reasons why SUVs are making big inroads. People are looking for something different.

While cars have always been the traditional choice, the SUV gives an impression that its driver has an active lifestyle.

The other reason is the cars driving position. SUVs allow you to sit taller and see above other cars, which is a feature that usually appeals to women.

Fuelled by innovationVOLKSWAGEN Group Malaysia introduced the new choice for driving pleasure, the Tiguan, in May. This 1.4 2WD is a fully imported compact SUV from Germany and is now available for viewing at all Volkswagen dealerships in Peninsular Malaysia.

A pure fusion of innovation and performance, the Tiguan is a sporty SUV that is practical, versatile and a safe and durable set of wheels.

True to its tagline Explore Life, the Tiguan combines exceptional performance with fuel efficiency and innovation, enabling discerning drivers to get the most out of their experience regardless of where they are.

The Tiguan is the latest addition to our range of offerings. It is a dynamic two-wheel drive SUV that provides power and fuel efficiency for those driven by performance and still encapsulates advanced safety features for peace of mind.

It provides both a fun and dynamic city drive as well as a comfortable long distance travelling experience, making it a more accessible addition to the trademark Tiguan experience, says Christoph Aringer, managing director of Volkswagen Group Malaysia.

This latest model continues the legacy and success of the Tiguan and its featured cutting-edge technologies sets it apart from the rest. As one of the more popular Volkswagen models in the world, the Tiguan has sold close to 600,000 vehicles worldwide since

    it was launched in 2007.

    Best-in-class innovative features

The only SUV in its segment to offer these exclusive innovative features, the two-wheel drive Tiguan is equipped with an automatic stop/start system engine that prevents unnecessary engine idle to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Additionally, it is equipped with a regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy applied during drive and brake to recharge the vehicles battery.

    Safety features

Passenger protection is a high priority at Volkswagen. Offering the advanced Rest Assist drowsiness detection system that alerts the driver when he or she is drowsy, the Tiguan features Electronic Stability Control that is designed to prevent under-steer or over-steer during bends.

In its interior, the car is further equipped with six airbags (dual front, dual side and curtain), standard three-point seatbelts, safety-optimised front headrests, which are particularly effective at helping to minimise head and whiplash injuries in an accident and an anti-theft alarm system for unparalleled safety and security.

    Interior

The interior of the Tiguan remains true to its promise

of comfort, with space and innovative features in abundance.

Fitted with Milan Alcantara seats, the Tiguan comes with a built-in electric parking brake with auto-hold, a leather gear knob, an auto dimming rearview mirror, foot lights, a split folding rear bench with slide function, a folding table on front seats, adjustable front centre armrests, seat adjustments for the front seats and variable seating system as well as eight speakers.

Further amplifying the experience for customers, the optional Tech Pack features even more innovations such as a Rear Assist rear view camera,

Climatronic auto air-conditioning with a two-zone temperature control system, an RCD510 colour touchscreen with MP3 and a six CD changer radio system. It also has multiple connectivity options such as Bluetooth, cruise control and a leather steering wheel.

    Engine and performance

The Tiguan features a 1.4L (160PS) twin-charged direct petrol injection TSI engine that

is coupled with a six-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG) for a riveting performance. This winning combination produces a maximum torque of 240Nm kicking in from a low 1,500rpm, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 8.9 seconds with a top speed of 198kph.

With a stellar combination of its innovative TSI and DSG technology, the Tiguan delivers maximum power with minimum fuel consumption.

Driving enthusiasts will take delight in its direct shift, dual-clutch transmission that offers the smoothest shifting to further enhance the experience behind the wheel.

On the fuel-efficiency front, the Tiguan has impressive combined fuel consumption ratings at 7.1L per 100km. The amalgamation of its TSI and DSG technology allows the driver to go a distance of approximately 14.1km with 1L of fuel, making the Tiguan a leader in fuel efficiency.

    Exterior

Possessing its signature style, the Tiguan is unmistakably a

    Volkswagen.With its chrome radiator grille

framed by swept back headlights, the practical SUV comes equipped with bi-xenon headlights for low and high beam with integrated LED daytime running lights (tech pack), dynamic headlight range adjustment and dynamic bending lights (tech pack), front and rear fog lights, electric adjustable folding and heated exterior mirrors (tech pack).

Though elegant, its ruggedness and aggressive styling is accentuated by four 17-inch Boston alloy wheels and silver anodised roof rails.

Further equipped with environment lighting, heat insulating glass, rain sensor and rear parking sensor, a wider and lower stance also gives the Tiguan a sharper profile.

The Tiguan is offered in five colour choices: Pure white, reflex silver, titanium beige, pepper grey and toffee brown.

The Tiguan is priced at RM178,888 and an option for Tech Pack at RM188,888.

n For more information, visit www.volkswagen.com.my

The SUVs also have larger cargo space.

With its higher roof and flat floor, it has more cargo space than a typical hatchback.

SUVs also have higher ground clearance that suits the road condition that we usually drive on within city areas.

An SUV also allows one to traverse unpaved roads better than a low slung hatchback.

SUVs are now better equipped, frugal in terms of fuel economy and as safe as any car in the market.

It is a repackaged vehicle with good looks that even car giants such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW now sport their own SUVs.

SUVs are now a popular choice among consumers.

The TIGUAN is an elegant and rugged ride.

    Affordable and attractive ride

    GWM Haval M4Engine: 1,497cc DOHC VVT 16VMax power: 105hp @ 6,000rpmMax torque: 138Nm @ 4,200rpmTransmission: 5-speed MT/6-speed AMTPrice: From RM49,000

ORDINARILY, the words affordable and attractive do not go together but fortunately for us, Great Wall Motors (GWM) has proven that it can be done.

Affordable vehicles can be fun, attractive and affordable. The company has just launched its first compact SUV in Malaysia, the Haval M4.

This is the first vehicle in Malaysia to be bestowed the Energy-Efficient Vehicle (EEV) status.

Perodua claimed that its latest Axia is Malaysias first EEV vehicle, which means the Axia is the first locally made vehicle to carry the EEV badge.

The M4 will be assembled in Kedah and will begin sometime between October and November.

Using a platform that has existed in the company for a few years, GWM has recycled and turned it into a front-wheel-drive crossover with an able 1.5L VVT engine under the hood.

Transmission is in two guises a five-speed manual and an AMT unit, which consist of 90% of the current bookings.

GWM has received orders for more than 600 units since its soft launch a few weeks ago.

The Haval drives as good as it looks. Its build quality is one of the best from China and is comparable to the national cars.

    The panel gaps and fitment

looks good while the plastics feel durable.

The front looks modern, with Volkswagen-type headlights and bold bumper grille.

The back of the Haval is similar to the Toyota Ist, although the Haval has sportier tail lights.

The boot space is acceptable for a vehicle of this size and is around 210L.

The seats are comfortable while the dashboard has good plastic quality. One can tell that GWM has paid

serious attention to detail here. The exceptions, however, are the gear knob and the indicator/

    wiper stalks that look inexpensive.

The HVAC control too can be improved but the rotary dials feel good to touch.

Performance wise, the engine is tuned for fuel consumption. China lacks huge oil wells and depends on outsourced fuel supply.

Therefore, fuel is costly there and many car manufacturers focus on fuel economy.

The M4 mirrors that as the engine, though eager, flats out early. It is rated at 6L/100km and emission standard is at Euro 4.

Still, one can muster 160kph on a private track and the best part is that the M4 does not have the tendency to float at any speed.

The problem with cheap cars has always been the fundamentals its chassis.

You can hide a cheap platform by putting in a lot of toys inside and a beautifully designed upper body but the M4 proves GWM did not cut any corners with the M4.

The chassis is solid and the suspension provides a good

    balance between comfort and performance.

Sound insulation is good up till a speed of 12kph (wind noise creeps in from the windows and wing mirrors) but the engine remains quiet.

This is an impressive vehicle and at a price tag that starts just below RM50,000, you should definitely give this a try.

The Haval M4 is an impressive vehicle.

The Haval M4s build is one of the best from China.

Tough little firecrackerTHE SUV bug has been affecting many and now many manufacturers are spilling the effects down to their smaller B-segment models.

Ford in Malaysia has been successful with its compact Fiesta and it is expecting more from another derivative of the Fiesta, the taller, more upscale and trendy Ford EcoSport.

The EcoSport is based on the Fiesta but has been extended in almost every dimension. The EcoSport makes more sense as a family car than a hatchback. The EcoFiesta has a respectable wheelbase length (2,519mm) that offers sufficient legroom for occupants at the rear. The boot is at 362L (bigger than any hatchback) while the 52L fuel tank will allow you to travel further without having to stop for petrol.

The EcoSport comes in two guises the basic Trend and the up-scaled Titanium. Both models carry the same 1.5L Ti-VCT engine with the Getrag 6DCT250 Powershift dual-clutch gearbox.

The Titanium has leather interior, a sunroof, push-start ignition, keyless entry, auto-lights and wipers, automatic temperature control and 16-inch wheels with patterns that are unique to the Titanium.

Safety specs include the usual electronic nannies electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock brake system, electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, Isofix mounts (for the rear seats) and for the Titanium, seven airbags, which also mean that you have no grab handles on the roof lining.

The EcoSports interior is like the Fiesta although some designs are unique to this mini SUV alone.

The Nokia-themed centre console buttons remain and Microsoft Sync system manages your entertainment system, including its voice-operated function that gives you a feeling of awe.

Its audio system, like most modern Ford models, is good.

Sony is a good partner for the brand and even in its pickup truck, the Ranger, the audio quality is among the best.

Performance wise, the 1.5L engine runs out of steam quite early. Even though it is running only the front wheels, it would be better if the engine could churn out more power.

With six ratios to play, the computer shuffles between the gears to ensure that the correct amount of power is transferred to the wheels.

However, the EcoSport changes gear too often, making the drive an even slower pace.

The suspension is also rather stiff, the shock from going over potholes and road bumps were not well absorbed.

On the road to Malacca, the EcoSport stood out on the highway.

The stiff suspension made a lot

Higher level of powerHONDA Malaysia recently launched the CR-V 2.4L. The introduction of this higher performance CR-V is part of Hondas effort in responding tothe good market acceptance ofits 2.0L model.

Honda Malaysias managing director and chief executive officer Yoichiro Ueno says, We have received overwhelming record sales since the first month of launching the 2.0L CR-V.

We are launching the CR-V 2.4L, which marks a higher level of power and premium touches with the models bold appearance, practicality, safety, class-leading spaciousness and fuel efficiency. We are confident that this model will continuously boost the sales further and ensure it remains at the top position of the SUV market segment.

The CR-V 2.4L is targeted at mature urban families who enjoy

an adventurous lifestyle, value a vehicle as a social and status symbol and at the same time place great emphasis on the security and safety of their family.

Powered by Hondas 2.4L DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engine, the CR-V 2.4L generates up to 190 horsepower at 7,000rpm and its torque is rated in 222Nm at 4,400rpm.

The CR-V 2.4L also features leather seats and an eight-way-power drivers seat. The smart entry system is also a new feature of this model.

A 6.1-inch touch-screen audio and navigation system is added to the CR-V 2.4L. Also added is the turn-by-turn NAVI system, Bluetooth audio with hands-free telephone system (HFT).

New features have been added to the CR-V 2.4L that increase drivers visibility such as the auto-levelling headlight, automatic

high intensity discharge (HID) headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

Overall, lookswise, the exterior is given a more masculine stance with 18-inch wheels and chrome door handles.

A low cargo floor, 60/40 one motion-fold rear seats and reverse camera are some of the other features of the CR-V 2.0L that have been left unchanged.

Honda has, however, added rear air conditioning vents. Another main highlight of the car is the ECO Assist, an economical driving programme that is activated by the push of a button.

To increase driver and passenger protection, the CR-V 2.4L features six air bags on top of the standard safety features of the 2.0L variant such as side airbags with occupant position detection system (OPDS) and three-point rear seatbelt.

This SUV is also equipped with electronic brake force distribution, vehicle stability assist, traction control system, side slip control, anti-lock braking system, hill-start assist and motion adaptive electronic power steering.

The safety features of the CR-V proved their worth in a recent Asean New Car Assessment Programme test for South-East Asia, where the CR-V managed

to achieve the coveted five-Star rating.

The Honda CR-V 2.4L is priced at RM169,800.00 (on-the road with insurance).

Honda Malaysia offers a five-year warranty with unlimited mileage and a new service interval of 10,000 km. In addition, the CR-V 2.4L owners are entitled to six times free labour services that alternate with paid services.

of sense as it felt solid even when driven at really high speeds.

Because the highway is mostly flat, the gearbox does not have to swap cogs as often, leaving the drive jerk-free.

Practicality is high as the EcoSport has a boot that is big and flat. The door might be long and heavy but one can get used to it like how Malaysians accepted the

Perodua Kembara and its same-side opening rear hatch.

Fuel consumption is good too as it was driven at an average of 8L/100km around town.

The fuel consumption remained low in spite of all the heavy accelerating it was put through. For a trendy get-around urban vehicle, the EcoSport certainly turns heads.

The EcoSport is a trendy SUV that makes a good family car.

The stylish interior of the EcoSport.

    The EcoSports sunroof.

The EcoSport comes in two guises - Trend and Titanium.

    Journey with a difference

Peugeot 2008Engine: 4-inline 1,600cc VTiMax power: 120PS @ 6,000RPMMax torque: 160Nm @ 4,250RPMTransmission: Four-speed automatic with sport modeSafety features: Six-airbags, ESP with ASR, ABS, EBD, ISOFIX anchorage points, DSC.Price: RM119,888 OTR with insurance.

SMALL SUVs is the in thing now but its design usually makes it more of an urban warrior. Experience a short jaunt on the highway and you will quickly want to return home and put it back where it belongs.

Peugeot had a different idea when it created the 2008 Urban SUV. Based on its highly popular 208 hatchback, Peugeot engineers have stretched the design to make it bigger.

This is quite apparent as the cabin closely resembles a C-segment sedan while the cargo space is 360L in volume.

I recently took a weekend trip to Bagan Lalang to spend a night at a resort with the family. Bagan Lalang is a popular destination among Kuala Lumpur urbanites. It is roughly 80km or one and a half hours away and is located on a scenic beach just off the Sungai Pelek town in Selangor.

Our journey started from Bangi, where we managed to pack our luggage into the 2008s boot with room to spare. The rear seat sits three people comfortably, but having only two young children made the ride more than comfortable for them in the back.

Cold air from the air-conditioning vents blew steadily and filled the rear, even with us having the glass roof open to enjoy the sight of the clear blue sky.

The one-and-a-half-hour journey did not feel long, thanks to the 2008 supple suspension that gave a smooth ride by absorbing

most of the shock from road bumps.

The roads towards the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) had minor pot holes and the undulations could have made the ride slightly bouncy.

Peugeot, a master in road handling, showed a thing or two as the 2008 cushioned out this irregularity while still maintaining a composed ride around the bends.

After the highways, we met with B-roads that began from the Enstec junction (behind SIC) and extended all the way towards Bagan Lalang.

The roads were good but again, sharp corners along the way added to the challenge. The 2008, although being taller than other cars, handled these curves well.

With its 1.6L VTi engine (122Ps and 160Nm) and the auto-adaptive with tiptronic and sports mode, the 2008 certainly felt as sporty as the compact 208 hatchback itself.

The best part about the back roads of Selangor is that even though you are not far away from the big city, the roads go through village and small towns, making you feel that you are hundreds of kilometres away from Kuala Lumpur.

    Small restaurants and food

stalls were found in the towns and when we stopped to look for some kuih, we were awed by the selection of food. It was like a food fest and to our pleasant surprise, the food tasted better than those sold in the city.

Sungai Pelek is a Chinese-dominated town, which is easy to tell by the number of big Chinese seafood restaurants found within the small area.

It consisted of rows of shops lining the main road and the hustle and bustle of the locals made us smile. Busy as they were, the local folks never failed to smile at us when we waved at them.

At a busy intersection, people politely gave way so obligatorily that it wouldnt have needed a traffic light. The same roads in KL would have massive deadlocks within less than 30 minutes as everybody will be fighting for their right of way.

Soon we were approaching Bagan Lalang, which was a good 5km off the main road.

Over the years, development was being done here, as observed from the housing projects seen upon entering the Bagan Lalang road.

They looked like holiday bungalows but with the beach being 5km away, one cannot fully expect this to be a holiday

getaway location. Still, if you are planning to stay

for the night in Bagan Lalang, there are a few hotels and resorts that will suit your budget.

From affordable homestays to the popular Sri Malaysia Hotel and the five-star Golden Palm Tree Resort, you can ensure a good stay on the scenic beach.

Another attraction for the KL folks is the abundance of good Malay seafood restaurants here. You can get the juicy ikan masak tiga rasa (sweet, sour and spicy-cooked fish) and the mouth-watering ketam masak cili (chilly crab) to have a feast with your family or friends.

During the weekends, throngs of car clubs can be seen on their convoy from KL to Bagan Lalang to dine at one of the seafood restaurants here.

The eateries are normally fully booked over the weekend. If you wish to avoid waiting for a table, we suggest that you call ahead to book.

As we drove into our resort, parking was the least of our concerns. One of the coolest features of the Peugeot 2008 is the Smart Park Assist feature, which not only helps us enter the parking space but exit it seamlessly as well.

After checking in at our resort,

Modern trucksBELIEVE it or not, automotive players have realised that pickup trucks are more than just trucks. With the creation of double-cab pickup trucks, the world has accepted the American or the Thai way, to use it as a lifestyle vehicle.

Although the trucks keep to its traditional ladder frame construction and rear leaf-spring suspension, the engineers have managed to make the new generation trucks a more comfortable place to be.

In fact, modern trucks like the current Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max all have car-like features and offer better ride quality than many sub-RM100,000 cars.

The Ranger and BT-50, for example, have audio system that comes with voice command so that you can get the system to make a phone call for you or to play a certain track from your iPod. The audio quality too is better than many cars.

The Isuzu has an audio system that channels some of the sound up into the roof lining, providing a surround-like quality. It also has a roomy interior and just like the Ford and Mazda, ride comfort is very car-like for all the occupants.

Recently, Nissan has launched the latest Navara pickup truck in Thailand and that truck, apart from having features that can again put cars to shame (rear air-con vents and reverse camera), has a variant that utilises multi-link

suspension for the rear. That puts it squarely with the SUVs.

Ladies too have started to see the benefits of a truck, especially its safety aspect. Nothing is safer than driving in the middle of the night in a big truck. There will

always be trucks for the real work but with the increasing demand, you can have a truck that is as comfortable as an SUV too.

Perhaps now you dont have to be that macho looking to consider a truck as your new vehicle.

we had a dip in the pool and walked on the beach to enjoy the sunset. We drove the Peugeot 2008 to the beach and its tall ground clearance feature allowed us to drive over tree roots and bumpy ground to get closer to the sandy beach.

After a short rest, we left the Peugeot at the resort and took a 10-minute walk to the seafood restaurant where we had booked a table ahead.

We would have loved to drive the Peugeot (the sunroof has blue LEDs lining it that looks amazing at night) but parking would have been a problem, according to the locals at the resort.

True enough, there were car clubs around and searching for parking would have rob us of precious family time.

After a good dinner consisting of garoupa fish, juicy buttered prawns and crabs, we headed back to our comfortable room and turned in for the night.

We took the Peugeot for a short drive around the area to find breakfast and found a nice stall under a tree further up the beach where they served delicious nasi lemak and local cakes.

Later, after another dip in the pool, we packed up and headed back to KL using a different route Morib-Banting-Klang-Shah Alam and back to Bangi.

It was a longer route but the 2008s good fuel consumption (we averaged around 8L/100km) made it economical and the Arkamys 3D sound system allowed everybody to just sit back and enjoy the journey.

If given the chance for another trip, the whole family agreed that the 2008 could be the vehicle of choice. In fact, my wife sometimes insisted that she wanted to drive it as she found the small steering and the engines performance rather sporty and suited her.

Everybody also agreed that we should take a longer journey to Malacca via the old beach road that stops by Pengkalan Kubur and Tanjung Bidara. By ALIF HISYAMThe Peugeot 2008 has a large boot space.

    Peugeot 2008.

Trucks can be considered lifestyle vehicles. With many features available, trucks offer comfort and safety.

RX Crossover gets sportyTHE best-selling model in the Malaysian Lexus range the RX Crossover gives customers a choice of up to six exterior colours and five different interior colour schemes (both depending on the variant). The four variants of the new RX are the RX 270, RX 350, RX 450h and the new RX 350 F SPORT.

    Aesthetic appeal

The frontal appearance of the RX Crossover has a stronger presence of sportiness while maintaining the key elements of the L-finesse design philosophy (incisive simplicity, intriguing elegance and seamless anticipation) that continues to guide the Lexus styling.

The bottom edge of the bumper has been lowered and the lower grille has been integrated into the bumper to give an appearance of stability and provide a lower centre of gravity while enhancing the overall look.

The lighting units at the front and rear have also been completely changed with LED daytime running lights in the unique Lexus arrowhead motif serving as a signature of the car. At the rear, the tail and stop lamps have been given red lenses for an enhanced sense of quality, incorporating an L-shaped arrowhead as well to feature the Lexus brand more prominently.

For the RX 350 F SPORT, styling is bolder with a larger front bumper that improves not only its aesthetics but also its aerodynamic performance (applicable for the RX 350, RX 350 F SPORT & RX 450h). The model also includes F SPORT badges on its sides to enhance its sporty look.

The RX 450h has unique headlamps with a blue tint to signify the uniqueness of the powertrain, which is the Lexus Hybrid Drive. Its headlamps use two LEDs for low beam and a halogen bulb for high beam (the other variants use HID bulbs).

LED daytime running lights are also installed and arranged in the same way as the other variants.

While the RX 270s 18-inch aluminium alloy rims have the same design as the previous

models, the other variants have new 19-inch rims. Additionally, the RX 350 F SPORT has rims with a dark grey finish and a black logo in the middle of each wheel.

    Interior

L-finesse was the guiding concept for the interior designers who created the cabin. The cabin is bold and combines functionality and form. For the RX, there has been enhancements made on its functionality to give an increased sense of quality. Changes have been made to seven elements, including the steering wheel, meter cluster, centre cluster panel, audio system, air-conditioner/ventilation control panel, Remote Touch controller and the middle console.

Additionally, ornamentation has been added in certain areas, which contribute to the premium feel of the vehicle.

The steering wheel is similar to the GS, which was developed from the experience gained in

designing the Lexus LFA supercar. For the RX 350 F SPORT, there are paddle shifters to select gears manually and there is an exclusive mark at the bottom of the middle spoke.

For the RX, the Lexus Premium System is standard and comes with 12 speakers strategically located around the cabin to create the best sound reproduction.

In addition to the CD/DVD player, portable music devices can also be connected via the USB and AUX ports. Bluetooth connectivity is also available for hands-free mobile phone usage.

All variants now come with an eight-inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display as standard and this is used for the navigation system as well as the reverse camera. As with other automotive navigation systems, the one in the RX uses GPS to determine the location of the vehicle.

Maps are provided on a hard disk drive and cover Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, Singapore and Thailand. The navigation system accepts voice commands and also provides voice and visual guidance to the selected destination. Numerous points of interests are provided, including Lexus Centres in each country.

With the increasing features and complexity of todays cars, finding simple ways to access and use these features is a growing challenge.

    Hence, Lexus assembled a

working group that includes members from its product development, design, ergonomics and other engineering departments who were tasked with creating and optimising a new navigation system interface.

The working group concluded that the Remote Touch controller enables the input of commands to select and operate the navigation system, audio system and temperature control. This controller helps minimise driver distraction and also provides a range of options for a customised driving experience.

Since being introduced in a number of Lexus models a few years ago, the Remote Touch controller has undergone improvements and the one in the RX models is a second generation unit. The Enter button has been replaced with a push-in type Remote Touch for easier operation.

    Enhancing fuel economy

No changes have been made to the three powertrains of the RX range and the RX 270 continues with the 2.7L, four-cylinder DOHC 16-valve petrol engine while the RX 350 and RX 450h variants use the 3.5L V6 DOHC 24-valve petrol engine.

The RX 450h also has electric motors at the front and rear to provide added output while enhancing fuel economy.

All RX variants use an automatic six-speed Super Electronic Controlled Transmission, which has been engineered for low weight (95kg) and compactness, with fast, smooth shifting and driver responsive shift control. The torque converter uses a low-speed lockup damper to enable lock-up from second to sixth gear to help improve the fuel economy.

The mechanical specifications are the same for all RX variants

which have a four-wheel independent suspension, power steering using an electric motor and disc brakes on all four wheels. For the RX 350 F SPORT, performance dampers have been fitted at the front and rear to give it greater handling stability as well as enhanced ride comfort. The dampers have been designed to effectively absorb minor vibrations and deformations that occur when the vehicle is in motion.

    Keeping occupants safe

Lexus engineers its vehicles with advanced passive safety technology and for the third generation of the RX model, more than 230 crash tests were performed to ensure best protection for its occupants. In the Japanese New Car Assessment Programme, the RX was given a six-star rating in crash tests while the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States gave it the Top Safety Pick Award.

Besides the standard front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags for all seating rows, there are also pre-tensioners and force-limiters in the seatbelts while the front seats have active headrests to reduce whiplash injuries.

For active safety, the RX has the Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, which uses advanced vehicle kinematics control that integrates brake control, drive power control and steering control to achieve excellent vehicle dynamics.

VDIM seamlessly applies stability control even before the vehicle reaches its performance limit to prevent accidents. VDIMs integrated control is so smooth that it is imperceptible to the driver.

The systems enhanced VSC function adds steering assist torque to aid handling safety on a split-friction surface. Other active safety features include the anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, traction control and vehicle stability control, which are coordinated by VDIM to provide seamless operation. This translates into smoother steering control, sure-footed cornering stability and strong, positive acceleration for the RX driver.

ONE of the reasons why tyres explode is due to a slow leak a condition where the tyre slowly loses air until there is not enough pressure to hold itself against the alloy wheel and it pops out.

When this happens, there is a high possibility that the driver will lose control of the vehicle and the result might be fatal.

The only way to overcome such a problem is by monitoring the tyre pressure and to detect a leak as early as possible. Unfortunately, many will not have the time to perform this check.

A local company from Ipoh, Perak, may have the solution to

The bold cabin combines form and functionality.

The RX Crossover has the key elements of the L-finesse design philosophy.

Local invention can save livesthis. Salutica Allied Solutions Sdn Bhd is preparing its Fobo Tire, the worlds first Bluetooth Smart Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Previously, air pressure sensors on each tyre would send out data via low RF (radio frequency) to a TPMS unit housed on the dashboard.

To check tyre pressure, the driver has to look into the divide and check.

If the pressure is low, an audible warning will be given but this only happens if you are already in the car, ready for the journey. A puncture will only delay your trip.

Fobo Tire uses the latest Bluetooth 4.0 technology that links directly to an application that you can install in an Android or iOS device or an in-car unit (in case if you lose your phone).

This allows you to check tyre pressure without having to sit inside the car.

The sensors are screwed on to the tyre valve on each wheel and have a battery that can last up to two years. Each application can monitor up to 20 cars.

Fobo Tire will be market-ready by November and judging by the response, it has already captured the worlds interest.

The Bluetooth Smart Tyre Pressure Motoring System will make tyre-pressure detection more convenient and efficient.

  • Unveiling the latest boroscope test results

    About Chevron Malaysia Limited

CALTEXS latest boroscope test in Asia, conducted throughout last year, revealed the harmful effects that lower quality petrol have on motor engines. It also highlights the cleaning proposition that Caltex with Techron offers as the ideal solution for motorists.

The boroscope test utilised a specially designed camera to examine the interior of a vehicles fuel system to inspect the cleanliness of critical engine parts.

Caltex with Techron petrol has been proven to be efficient at keeping intake valves cleaner based on boroscope tests that were conducted on 150 valves.

Results from the about 19 vehicles tested in Malaysia showed that vehicles using Caltex with Techron performed very well in keeping fuel systems clean, proving that the petrol kept intake valves almost perfectly clean as compared to vehicles using lower quality petrol.

Motorists are often unaware of the state of their vehicles. The boroscope tests give us the opportunity to prove to local motorists that Caltex with Techron keeps their engines clean, contributing to better performance of the vehicle, says Greg Engeler, Chevron product engineering regional manager of Asia-Pacific.

Chevron has spent more than 30 years in research and development to prove that our patented Techron technology works in the United States and now we want to prove its cleaning properties can work in Malaysia as well.

Using a Karl Storz Endoscope (boroscope), Chevron engineers took photos of intake valves and ports via fuel injector holes and rated them using a Co-operative Research Council (CRC) Intake

Valve Deposit (IVD) rating system, where a score out of 10 was assigned, with 10 denoting a perfectly clean valve.

Photos of piston tops were also taken via spark plug holes to visually assess combustion chamber deposits (CCDs).

Vehicles that were using Caltex with Techron achieved an average score of 9.7 out of 10, surpassing the average score of vehicles using lower quality petrol, despite achieving a higher odometer reading, emphasising Techrons cleaning power. Vehicles using lower quality fuels had recorded the worst valve readings during the tests, with readings of eight out of 10.

The tests were performed on local vehicles that were using Caltex with Techron that were compared to vehicles that used competitor or lower quality petrol

brands within the test markets. Vehicles selected represented a cross-section of the local market vehicle fleet to reveal an unbiased and the true state of local motorists vehicles.

In order to perform at its best, your engine requires unrestricted air and fuel delivery, which cannot happen when deposits have clogged your vehicles intake valves and port fuel injectors. A clean engine ensures that your vehicles fuel-to-air ratio is optimised, allowing your vehicle to take full advantage of the energy in your fuel.

Only Caltex has the proven power of Techron, which can clean your port fuel injectors in just one tank, allowing an engine to run more efficiently and helping you travel further on less fuel, adds Engeler. All grades of Caltex with Techron petrol contain Techron, Chevrons patented fuel additive backed by more than 30 years of research and development.

Techron contains a polyetheramine component, which has been designed to clean up fuel system deposits and prevent them from reforming. Lower quality fuels can leave harmful deposits in the motor engine that accumulate over time, causing the vehicle to stumble during acceleration or lose power.

One tank of Caltex with Techron petrol can clean up deposits on port fuel injectors. Continuous use of Techron will help to clean engines and provide motorists with five benefits, including better fuel economy, maximised power, reliable performance, lower emissions and a smoother drive.
