Dear Parents and Friends,

Welcome to term 2 and I hope you enjoyed the Easter break. The children came back to school happy, refreshed and ready to connect with friends.

NAPLAN 2017

The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3 and 5 starts next week. The assessment tests the critical literacy and numeracy skills . NAPLAN provides a snapshot of learning and a line of enquiry.

Is the child meeting or above the national minimum standard?

Is the school's student NAPLAN data within expected levels of achieve-ment?

How are WA Public Schools performing?

How will schools use the data to plan for whole school improvement strategies?

The questions and tasks within each assessment align with the Australi-an Curriculum for the year level.

The data and student reports are usually available in late term 3.

If a child is absent from school they will complete the assessments during NAPLAN week.

Don’t panic Mum and Dad. Keep calm, make sure the children get to school by 8:45am and everything will go to plan!

Primary and Academic Challenge (PEAC)

The North Metropolitan Education Region Year 4 PEAC testing will be com-pleted during term 2. The date is to be confirmed. A letter will be sent home to parents prior to the testing. Selected students (98/99 percentile) will be eligible for PEAC program in years 5 and 6 in 2018-19.

The school will close at 12:00 for parent/teacher interviews on Wednesday 28th June. Interviews run from

Every day it is joy to come to school because moments with children are precious and funny. This week a visitor came to school and asked a young child for directions” Where is room 10?” to which the child replied “next to room 9” and walked off.

National Karate Champion

Well done Hayden Rawstorne, Mount Claremont's own national karate champion! Hayden recently represented our school in a national schools karate competition in Sydney where he did Mt Claremont PS so very proud pick-ing up the Silver medal. He then backed that up the following day in the Australian Open competition competing against various other boys for over 1.5 hours to claim the Gold medal. It's such wonderful news and I know how hard Hayden has worked for that success. Congratulations Hayden Rawstorne, the Australian 10 Yrs Boys Cham-pion for 2017!

Year 3 & 4 students run a 1.1km course whilst Year 5 & 6 students run a 1.65km course. All students may com-pete in the Faction Carnival, however only the top 5 placegetters from each event will qualify for the Interschool Cross Country Carnival.

There is an opportunity for all Year 3-6 students to participate in cross country training sessions over the first 8 weeks of Term 2. The training sessions will be held across the road from the school at Mt Claremont Oval on Montgomery Ave every Tuesday morning from 7:45am - 8:30am.

Brownes Dairy Excursion

On Thursday 6th of April students in Room 2 and Room 3 visited Brownes Dairy and participated in the From Moo to You excursion. On arrival we were greeted by two farmers and a tour guide and taken into the milking shed where Farmer Damien told us about Brownes Dairy, from its history to how milk gets from the cow to us. Students watched a video before splitting into class groups. Students visited the Brownes kitchen and got to taste some products, of which some have not yet been released to the public, as well as performing a little science experi-ment. Students got to stand on the viewing platform and see how milk and yoghurt are processed and packaged. Farmer Damien and our tour guide, Maria, told us lots of information and answered many questions. At the end of the excursion all students got to milk Missy Moo, Farmer Damien’s dairy cow, who travelled up for the day. Thank you to Mrs Lambrecht, Mr Garbin, Mrs Swan, Mrs Routledge and Mr Staples for volunteering their time joining class teachers, Mrs Carter and Miss Crozier to help on their excursion.

P&C NEWS

NEW EXEC AND COMMITTEE

The P&C held it’s AGM on Wednesday 26 April. Included in a very full agenda was the election of the new execu-tive and committee. Congratulations to those who were elected:

As the outgoing President I wish Samantha and the new exec and committee a fun and fulfilling time in their vari-ous roles. A big thank you to everyone I have worked with over the past few years for your support and commit-ment. The P&C continues to contribute significantly to the school and you should be proud of your efforts.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SCHOOL

Also at the AGM the P&C approved funding of $83,200 to the school for a range of items and has requested cost-ings for certain projects with a view to providing further significant funding this year. The $83,200 covers:

This level of funding reflects the usual base figure contributed by the P&C each year and each year it is also usu-al for additional funds to be provided for ad hoc needs that arise during the year and for ongoing items such as uniform shop subsidy, sports training and resources, school community event subsidies and the like.

CAMP-OUT AT SCHOOL

The P&C and the school are supporting a proposal by Christina Graham for a camp-out for kids on school grounds. It is likely to be overnight on Saturday 9th September 2017 and is designed to be an opportunity for chil-dren in any year at the school to spend some dedicated time amongst their friends and father close to Father’s Day.

A note from the Community Health Nurse

Anxiety – how to help your child

All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others.

Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense.

If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:

Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it.

Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face.

Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help

Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid.

Avoid labeling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’.

Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or in-terferes with their friendships, school work or family life. If you are worried about your child, contact your local Community Health Nurse, School Psychologist or General Practitioner.
