FROM THE PRINCIPAL Melissa Nelson

Dear Parents and Whanau, I hope you have all dried out after the long weekend of rain, rain and more rain. Our region was certainly hit hard- so I hope this newsletter finds your homes intact and flood free. Community consultation survey At the end of term one, we surveyed the community and staff about school wide structures at MMI for the future. As you know, balancing a growing roll has been challenging for us and we continue to face this challenge most weeks, with requests for out of zone enrolments for new students. In the survey, we asked for views about composite (two year group) classes, collaborative (larger class, two teachers) classes, our accelerate class model and the idea of keeping our students with the same teacher for two years (with the odd tweak in the best interests of the student). The results of the survey were mixed - and with a large and diverse community, this was of no surprise. As a leadership team, we have read the feedback carefully, discussed many scenarios, weighed up the pros and cons and have made decisions based on the best needs and opinions of the majority. Community, Board of Trustees and teaching staff views were collated and considered during the decision making progress. The majority of both the community and teaching staff preferred that students remain with the same teacher for two years. For the most part, this was because both groups saw benefit in a consistent relationship, reduction of anxiety about change, less need for early testing and the opportunity to get straight into teaching routines at the start of the new school year. For these reasons, we have decided that our students will stay with the same home room teacher for the two years they are at MMI. Please note: At the end of each year, if either the parent, teacher or student feel that the current class placement is not the best fit to meet the individual student’s learning, social or behaviour needs, then we will arrange a time to discuss class placement. Any shifts will be made on an individual basis, in consultation with all parties and the Senior Leadership Team. The proposal of composite classes was met with a mixed response from the community. Whilst only 30% of the community said they did not want any composite classes, the majority preferred that we offer a mixture of options. In consultation with the staff, and based on experience, a mixture of class structures is not manageable, or in our opinion, in the best interests of the school. As such, we have decided that all classes will be composite (year 7 and 8) classes at MMI from the beginning of the 2019 school year. Staff voice was strong (70% in favour) that a composite model is preferable when keeping students for two years. This model offers the consistency of the teacher-student relationship, a predictable environment and deep knowledge of the students as learners. Asking the year 8’s to step up as leaders and role-models for their new year 7 classmates each year, allows for some shifts within classroom friendships and keeps the dynamics fresh and interesting. The majority of community respondents were in favour of the current model of accelerate classes at MMI. As such, we will continue to run two accelerate classes in 2019 and beyond. These classes will both be composite (years 7 and 8), in keeping with the school wide model of composite classes. Note: Our bilingual class will continue in 2019 as it has been in the past, as a composite class. Collaborative classes will continue to be established at MMI, in the buildings that are designed to house such classrooms. Because our buildings are a mixture of structures, and because we think these classrooms need teachers who are both skilled in, and committed to this style of teaching, we will continue to offer some collaborative and some single cell classrooms in 2019 and beyond. Our collaborative classes will not be larger than a two-class equivalent.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL continued Melissa Nelson

As always, we will work closely with our great contributing schools to get accurate information about our new group of Year 7’s and place them carefully, in accordance with their advice. The changes in school structure for our awesome school have been carefully considered, over a considerable time frame. We are 100% committed to providing the best education for emerging adolescents and for our community. We thank you for supporting us by completing the survey. If you have any questions, please feel encouraged to make contact with any one of the Senior Leadership Team. Have a great week. Melissa Nelson Acting Principal

Anchor AIMS Games 2018

The Anchor AIMS games run from Sunday 9th September to Friday 14th September. All Entries are due to the NZ AIMS organising committee by 11pm, Wednesday 13th June. Mount Maunganui Intermediate will be entering a number of teams in this event (Please note that this is an elite competition and that we can only enter one team per code and we pick our best team in each code). The following codes offer the opportunity for students to compete as an individual. Badminton, BMX, Canoe Slalom, Cross Country (held on the Sunday), Golf (must have a handicap), Gymnastics, Indoor Bowls, Multi-Sport, Rock Climbing, Swimming (must meet qualifying standards), Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Yachting. Team sports are in the middle of having trials (or have just completed trials) for the following team codes. Aerobics, Basketball, Football, Futsal, Hip Hop, Hockey (mixed 6 a side team), Netball, Rugby 7s and Water Polo.

Most of the AIMS teams or initial squads for teams have been named. Please respect

the decisions that have been made by a group of selectors who have been through a

thorough selection process. It must also be remembered that teams are selected as

joint year levels, not a Year 7 team and a Year 8 team. If an outside coach is being used

we have ensured that a staff member from our school is part of the trial and selection

process. Team selections were made before the cut-off date for those who may wish to

enter as an individual, if they miss team selection. Please note that due to potential

time clashes that a student can ONLY play for one team sport.

If your child would like to enter an event as an individual, they should have brought home/or been emailed a newsletter outlining the cost of the event and cut-off date for the final payment. A list of those confirmed as individuals who would like to be considered for entry is on the next page.

As per the team codes, there may be limited number of places available in some sports,

so the Teacher In Charge of the Sport would need to make the final selection of students.

If your child does not appear on the list (as of Wednesday 6th June), or should not be on the list, could you please notify Troy Jennings as soon as possible. All individual entries NEED TO BE finalised by Friday 8th June. If they have been selected in a team sport they will more than likely not be able to compete as an individual (Cross Country, Swimming, Multi Sport may be exceptions). Before we can enter an individual we must have received payment, as the school does not get any refunds from AIMS if someone withdraws. All late entries also incur a 50% increase in cost. Therefore, if we have not received the entrance fee by 12.00pm, Friday 8th June, your child unfortunately will not be registered. Please note: if your child has put their name down on a list, this does mean they have been confirmed in that event (payment must be received and refunds will be given to those not selected). If you would like any extra information about any code in the AIMS games, you can find out by visiting the web page http://nzaimsgames.co.nz/ . Please contact Troy Jennings at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the AIMS games.

TAURANGA HOCKEY REGISTRATIONS Tauranga Hockey has loaded registration forms online for U13 representative team trials: http://www.tgahockey.co.nz/Reps-Information-1/Under-13-Teams

Please encourage all your hockey players to register to trial. The trials are open to any Tauranga Hockey player who is a year 7 or 8 student and under 13 as at 1/1/18. If you have players that play well and want to play more hockey then encourage them to trial. The Collier and Hatch A rep teams are the best players in that age group and the development teams are for those players not quite ready for the A team but who show potential to make an A team in the future.

PiPS

Pupils Plants Schools

PiPS is an Incorporated Society based in the Mt Maunganui/Papamoa Beach area, formed to help

support the garden programmes of our member schools.

PiPS employs a Garden Facilitator (Clare) who works

across our schools, assisting volunteers and staff to run

their school gardens and other environmentally-

based, student focussed projects within the school.

At MMI we have 2 very keen groups who work in our

school gardens with Clare on Friday mornings.

The students are learning so much about growing plants

for food. They get to cook some of the food they grow,

take it home or it is used in Food Technology lessons.

kale chips are a favourite as are cheese and herb scones.

See what our groups have been up to on the PiPS blog.
