FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Kia ora koutou,
It’s been another incredibly busy week at MMI. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for their organisation and the increased workload that occurs when we prepare to take our students on camp and a big thanks to all our parent volunteers, who have also assisted so capably on camp. Almost all of our year 7 classes have been up to Ngatuhoa Lodge and despite some unsettled weather, we have received warm and positive feedback from students and their families. Room/Whanau 14 and 16 head up to Ngatuhoa Lodge next week and Room/Whanau 18 in week 1 of term 2. Next week all of year 8 also heads up to Finlay Park. We hope you all have a great time. Travel Safe: Heading home. This is still a concern. Keep those reminders up with your emerging adolescence: Whether you are walking, biking, scootering or skateboarding, be alert and mindful of other road users. Elite Touch: Congratulations to the MMI Elite Touch teams who performed creditably at the WBOPPB Elite Touch last Friday. Thank you to Mr Jennings and Whaea Sharon and a big congratulations to our Year 7 Girls team, who came runner up in the tournament. Accelerate Class Information Evening: Thank you to all families and students who came in on Wednesday night to attend the accelerate class information evening. The purpose of the evening was to share information about the accelerate programme. Feedback was very positive and we hope that you found the evening beneficial. Roll Growth Class: We are currently working through the process of looking at ways that we can reduce class numbers particularly, in our Year 7 classes. The BOT has agreed to fund additional staffing. So, we need to plan for this very carefully in order to make decisions that best meet the needs of our learners. We also need to manage our numbers carefully, particularly in light of the fact that we often experience growth of around 20 students, in the latter part of the year. More information to follow. Have a great weekend everyone. Safe and happy camping year 8's. Ma te wa Lisa Morresey

ROOM 9 LEARNING PAGE In Room 9 we have been thinking about challenges in different contexts and sharing our stories of conflict. Some of us shared about our families, how they were part of conflict and how they met and overcame the challenges. Here are two samples of our writing. We shared some others at assembly today.
Caleb
Mervyn Charles Ellery (My great grandfather ) Mervyn was born on the 5th of July 1915 in Invercargill Hospital. He was one of five children and he was the only boy.
He was married to Isobel Joyce Latham. (Here is a photo on their wedding day). Isobel was from a family of 11 children and one of her brothers, Ian Latham, was also involved in the war he was a soldier but he didn't survive. Mervyn and Isobel had 2 daughters named Glenys and Gaylene. Gaylene is my grandmother.
In 1915 the main form of transport used was horses which they rode to the nearest shops sometimes 2 or 3 miles away. They would walk barefoot to school. A lot of families were large (Mervyn’s wife's family had 11 children). Living in a big family was hard. There was never enough money for outside activities so they learnt to entertain themselves. They got lots of hand me downs. At Christmas time it was a like a luxury to get an orange and some nuts in a stocking which you wouldn't have to share.
Before war Mervyn was a truck driver in Matamata. He and his father owned their own fleet of green and red livestock transport trucks. The fleet was named M.C Ellery Ltd. It is now
named Rotorua Livestock Ltd and it is still well known by both names. The trucks are still red and green to this day.
He went to war in 1942 aged 27 he was in war until the end of WWll in 1945. He was sent home from war with chicken pox but he had to return when he got better. He drove trucks in Egypt and he also fought. One time he got shot at but luckily the strap on his rifle deflected the bullet. It would have been very tough fighting for his country.
Mervyn returned home to his wife and his two daughters.
The war years affected his life and he never spoke about it much but he still played “the last post” on his trumpet at funerals and RSA occasions. He did this for over 40 years. He used to make tree chimes and things with rimu as a hobby. He was known to keep the cemetery headstones tidy. Our family have all his old war medals and army papers which are special keepsakes. Mervyn sadly passed away in 2006 and his ashes are in the Matamata war memorial wall. He and his wife didn't have McDonald's until they were 80.
Jye Thomas Hamilton Croft. Born on the 6th of November 1908 in New Zealand.
As a child he loved to play football and run.
Back in 1908 New Zealand was much calmer and quiet. There were trains going through towns and all the cars had skinny wooden wheels. He fought in World War 2 fighting for New Zealand. He fought in Germany as a gunner. The gunner’s job was to stand at the back of a jeep and shoot tanks with the purpose of destroying them. He drove around blowing up tanks. During the war in Germany all the buildings were collapsing and there were dead bodies everywhere. Also during the war he became a Sergeant.
After the war he was a bit deaf from all the big guns he had used. When the war ended he didn't like to talk about it to anyone. I think that he didn't like to talk about the war, because maybe someone that he knew died.

SPORTS INFORMATION
BOP/POVERTY BAY ELITE TOUCH Last Friday, students from our school competed in the Elite Touch Champs, in Rotorua. Our Year 7 boys’ team and Year 8 girls’ team competed well throughout the day, had a lot of fun and had some close losses. The Year 7 girls’ team played well throughout the day and only lost one game to Rotorua, 2-3, to end up second after the round robin (unfortunately no play off for top 2 teams). Our Year 8 boys’ team played well throughout pool play and went into their last game needing to beat Tauranga, to make the final. In a close tussle they lost 2-3, and then lost the 3rd and 4th playoff to Whakatane. Thank you to Dylan Lee Peyroux who helped coach the Year 8 boys’ team.
