If your child has a passion to play football, and wants to learn what it takes to be a success on the gridiron, make sure you check out a new summer camp program being offered in Miramar. The City of Miramar

is starting a new Summer Football Skills Camp, designed to teach youngsters everything from running to passing, blocking and tackling. “We want to teach the kids the skill sets to get them prepared for middle school or high school football,” said Billy Neal, Athletics Coordinator with the City of Miramar.

Neal says it is the first time the City has offered a summer camp focused only on football, and not a different sport each week. He says it came about thanks to the football coaches from Everglades High School in Miramar who approached the city with the idea for the camp. The goal was to focus on elemen-tary and middle school students wanting to learn the game from the ground up.

The camp will be held on the school’s football fields and run by coaches and players. The morn-ings will focus on football skills, then after the campers break for

lunch, they will spend the afternoon doing different sports and free play. The best part; no previous experience is needed. “We are starting as young as age six, and they are going to teach them everything,” said Neal. As an added attraction, former Dolphin Derrick Rogers will also be in attendance to sign autographs.

The Summer Football Skills Camp will run in three different age-based sessions. Session 1 will run from June 10–June 21, from 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. for children ages 6-8. The cost is $300 for entire session. Session 2 will run from June 24 –July 5, from 7:00 a.m.– 6:00 p.m. for ages 9-12. The cost is $300 for entire session. Session 3 will run from July 8– July 19, from 7:00 a.m.–12 noon. It is for teens ages 13-15. The cost is $250 for entire session.

You can register your child for the Summer Football Skills Camp Registrations at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center, 7000 Miramar Parkway. Space is limited to 40 children per age group. M iramar will host the relay for life event this month and organizers are still looking for teams to come and join the annual over-night cancer-fighting effort. At least 20 teams from local schools, busi-

nesses, clubs, church and synagogues have already signed on, but there is still room for more. “We are looking for more teams to come out and join us,” said Susan LaClaire, a Community Representative with the American Cancer Society. “We would love to get family, friends and maybe teams from busi-nesses to come take part.”

The Miramar Relay will be held June 14-15 at the Ansin Sports Complex. The event will have somewhat of a different look this year, as it will be the first time in several years that the Relay has not been held in coordination with students at Everglades High School. LaClaire said the school connection made it difficult for many members of the community to become involved. “This year it has become a city initiative. The Mayor is really behind the event and we have a good number of city employees participat-ing,” she said. The school held a separate student-run Relay for Life in April.

The city-sponsored Miramar Relay for Life will begin with a Survivors Lap, where cancer survivors take the first lap, celebrating their victory over cancer. LaClaire says they are still looking for additional survivors to join them. There is

also a Luminaria Ceremony later in the evening to honor those who have been lost to the disease, or those whose fight continues.

Relay for Life got its start In 1985 when a Tacoma, Washington physician named Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society. A year later, 340 supporters joined him in the effort and it has grown ever since. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in the overnight community fundraising walk, which encourages teams of people to camp out around a track. Throughout the night, members of each team take turns walking around the track. The events are family-friendly and include food, entertainment and camaraderie. LaClaire says it is never too late to sign up and join in. “We hope the community comes out and supports the event. We would love to get more participation,” she said.

If you love fresh fruits and vegetables, you’re going to have to find a new shopping venue for the next two months. Like many of us, the Farmer’s Market at Memorial Hospital Miramar is taking a short break for the

summer and held its last session May 19. “Our mission with this market was to help promote healthy lifestyles and community well being,” said Leah Carpenter, CEO Memorial Hospital Miramar. “Judging from its success, we feel the commu-nity embraced this event and used it to gather with family and friends, connect and learn about their health.”

The Farmer’s Market at Memorial Hospital Miramar has been a weekly mainstay in the city since its opening day last September. Each Sunday the market, located at 1901 SW 172nd Avenue, welcomed more than 50 vendors who sold assorted goods from freshly baked artisan breads to organic coffee, herbs, flowers, as well as fresh produce. Organizers estimate more than 26,000 people

visited the market from September to May with vendors often selling out by the end of the day.

The market is a part-nership between the City and Memorial Hospital Miramar. Spurred on by the success of its Community Garden in Fairway Park, the city originally approached the hospital with the idea of creating a market to bring fresh, locally grown produce to residents. City leaders say it has been a success. “The sense of community generated at this market during its first season goes beyond our Miramar boundaries, it is now a tradition in our region,” said Lori C. Organizers wrapped up the season with an array of events, including a petting zoo, the introduction of newly born baby goat and name the “baby goat” contest, free blood pressure screenings, sun and water safety for infants, Miramar’s Fire Truck & Rescue vehicles for kids to explore, coloring books, bike safety tips, and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Next season, organizers hope to bring more variety and organic products to the market, which will return in September.

Several hundred people dug into stacks of pancakes and sau-sage recently to enjoy a great breakfast, while also helping to fill the coffers of two local charitable efforts. The 3rd Annual Pancake Festival, sponsored

by the Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines and the Florida Bible Church’s Haiti Mission Team, was held April 27 and drew lots of hungry guests. “It is all

you can eat pancakes and sausage, so people are just digging in and having a great time,” said Angie Font, with the Kiwanis Club of Miramar/Pembroke Pines

The festival, which was expected to bring an esti-mated $3,000, was held at the Florida Bible Church located at 9300 Pembroke Road in Miramar. Guests enjoyed not only break-fast, but pastries, auctions and entertainment as well.

It was the third joint venture between the two organizations and was designed to raise money for both the church’s Haiti Mission Team and the Scholarship Fund for Miramar-Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club. “It takes a lot of work to pull off our Pancake Festival, so we decided to work together for both causes,” said Font.

Pancake breakfasts are a staple of Kiwanis, which was founded nationally in 1915. The Miramar/Pembroke Pines Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1992 and cur-rently sponsors Key Clubs at Everglades High, Miramar High, Flanagan High and

Somerset Academy Central Miramar.

“Many of those students are here volunteering today,” said Font. The scholarships are based on a student’s level of community service, financial need and Key Club membership. In addition to scholar-ships for high school seniors, they also hold food drives for the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas and house repair projects for the elderly.

The pancake breakfast also serves as a way for members of the church’s Haiti Mission Team to fundraise, as well as learn to work together as a team. It is an important task as they will head to the Haitian village of Maniche November 15th for their fifth annual mission. For one week, they will minister to the men, women and children of the local church with health screenings, school projects and fel-lowship. “It is wonderful to travel there and have a chance to minister to the com-munity,” said Santina Brothers with the Florida Bible Church’s Haiti Mission Team.

W ith food, festivities and even a sweet treat, the volun-teers who help keep our local library operating smoothly got a well deserved back on the pat recently. On April 24, the Miramar Branch

Library treated its volunteers to an Appreciation Luncheon at a local restaurant, complete with chocolate fountain.

There’s little doubt as to how much the volunteers mean to the library, said Mary Stephens, the Miramar Branch Library Volunteer Coordinator. Stephens said Branch Library Manager Chris Marhenke welcomed the volunteers with news that they had contributed 1,688 hours to the library from October to March. That number represents a little more than 1.5 full time staff members, approxi-mately worth $34,000 in “value”.

Stephens said all of the volunteers were presented with Broward County Library Volunteer Appreciation Certificates, as well as glass coffee cups with blue tops. Three outstanding volunteers-- Judy Sullivan, Gloria Jackerson and Sandy Horowitz.--received gift cards from the Broward Public Library Foundation for the “Going the Extra Mile” Award: Several volunteers also received Presidential Volunteer Certificates signed by President Obama, along with pins. Bronze level (100-249 hours) was awarded to Jeanette Pinder, Dr. Mary Howrey, Pam Steele, Mike Sullivan, Linda Winkler (who started a monthly book club); Silver (249-500 hours) to Gloria Jackerson, Sandy Horowitz, Marie Seibel , Carolyn Orban; Gold (500+) to Judy Sullivan, Francie Horton, and Dale Draughon (Vice President of the FRIENDS).

The volunteers also heard from Miramar Branch Library Reference Supervisor Lisa Jackson and Judy Sullilvan, the President of the Miramar Friends of the Library, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Miramar Public Library. The group operates a used book store at the library, holds a monthly book discussion, book fairs/bakes sales and is always in need of new volunteers.

She’s only been a girl scout for two years, but already Karina Czubkowski has earned the second highest honor a Girl Scout

can receive. The Miramar girl recently received the Girl Scout Silver Award, an honor designated for mid-dle school students who prove they are determined, organized and dedicated to improving their commu-nity. “It was very exciting to win it,” Karina said.

The 12-year old teamed with Katelyn Besu, Stephanie Phillips and Kerstin Martinez for the

project. All are rising eighth grad-ers at Saint Mark Catholic School in Southwest Ranches, as well as mem-bers of Girl Scout Troop 10306. In order to earn the Silver Award, the girls had to find a pressing need in the commu-nity and then create a project to help fix it. Karina says they knew right away where they wanted to help. For years, the troop had volunteered at His House Children’s Home, a private, non-profit faith based organization dedicated to helping children from newborns to age 18, and those who have transitioned out of the foster care system. They decided to renovate a playroom, which was badly in need of a makeover. “We basically recreated the entire room,” said Karina.

The girls repainted, cleaned and reorganized the room, stocking it with a new televi-sion, toys, furniture, movies and more. To help pay for it, they held fundraisers through the National Elementary Honor Society at their school, and received donations from not only family and friends, but also City Furniture, Home Depot, Best Buy, the Knights of Columbus and others in the community.

The girls took pride in being the first from their troop to earn the honor. “It was all worth it, because every-one was so happy and I felt good giving back and helping,” Karina said.

The Silver Award project now complete, the girls are not done yet. Karina says as soon as they are eligible, they plan on going for the Gold Award, the very highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

It’s going to be a busy summer for miramar high school student Valerie Lamb. The 17-year old rising senior will take a short break from her duties as Vice-President of the Student Government Association, as well as

President of the Drama Club to focus on perhaps her biggest passion; playing softball. Lamb, who captained the Miramar Patriots Varsity softball squad this past season, will be spending her summer honing her athletic skills even further.

Lamb plays for the West Pines Diamond Dusters-Schmalz, a travel fast pitch soft-ball squad based in Pembroke Pines that plays in the top tournaments in Florida, as well as around the nation. A pitcher who joined the squad in the fall, Lamb says she loves the spot-light of being on the mound. “I like that pressure. I like that the fact that everyone in the game is dependent on how well I do,” Lamb said.

Lamb has been playing the sport since she was eight years old, and made it to the varsity squad at Miramar High School in just her freshman year. As a sophomore, she was an Honorable Mention as an All-State pitcher and this past sea-son finished with a 2.00 earned run average, the 13th best in the county. In addition, the versatile athlete also played short stop on the days she wasn’t pitching, and then filled in when her fellow pitcher went down with injury. “We had been switching off games, but when she couldn’t play, I had to pitch the remainder of the season,” she said.

Lamb’s school roster doesn’t stop with softball. She was also President of the Drama Club and recently directed 12 Angry Jurors, in which she also played the roles of two jurors. She competed in Theater Districts two years in a row, where she earned

“Superior” as a sophomore and a “Excellent” as a junior. She’s also a mem-ber of the National Honor Society and Vice-President of SGA. She’s also a mem-ber of the school’s IB pro-gram, is on the honor roll and is an AP scholar. With another year of high school

to go, Lamb says she is hoping to play college ball, but at a school that will allow her to major in political science, and minor in theater. “I have three things in my life that I really love focusing on,” she said.

Dear miramar residents:Last November my letter to you all spoke about

the Broward League of Cities’ first-ever Million Hour Volunteer Challenge to the residents of Broward County. The basis of the challenge is that the League believed that vol-unteering strengthens communities, solves problems, and improves lives. I am pleased to announce that Miramar is close to its goal of 55,000 hours!

While many of us are aware of high school students’ volun-teer requirements, we should continue to remind them that volunteering doesn’t end when one graduates from high school and volunteering is no longer obliga-tory. We must show that volunteering is a lifelong commitment to make the world a better place by being compassionate to those in need and working to make a difference. While many may elect to make monetary donations, which is fine, your presence would be just as equally, if not more valuable.

I will always encourage us all to get involved by participating in any volun-teer project that matters to you. Think of a volunteer project that touches your heart in some way. It could be reading to pre-K children, working in Miramar’s Community Garden, helping out at your child’s school, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, helping out at a homeless shelter, or coaching a Little League team. The point is to decide that you will help to make the world a better place by starting in your own neighborhood thus making a difference in the lives of people who need your help.

It is my fervent hope that our proud City will become a place known for its active citizenry involved in helping its neighbor and fellow man. Miramar is fast becoming a city on the move as a great place to work, play and live. I want it also to be known as a city that works to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

During the challenge we partnered with great organizations like the Miramar Optimist Club, the Police Athletic League, and the Moose Lodge through various volunteering activities. Even though the challenge is over, I hope that you all con-tinue your volunteer efforts with them or the organization you volunteered to work with. Let’s show the County that Miramar can make a difference.

Remember, “All great changes occur when we decide to take action.”

Before heading off for the summer break, students at Coral Cove Elementary School had a

chance to celebrate the closing of the school year with their annual “Spring Fling” event. The school’s 800 students left the school books in the classroom May 9 for the day-long event, which fea-tured slides, bounce houses, sprinklers, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn and other fun. The kids were invited to bring their bathing suits for the day and each grade enjoyed close to two hours on the festival grounds, along with their teachers, PTA volunteers and parents.

“A” ranking, which was reason enough to celebrate fro Principal Philip Bullock. “Today’s about giving back to the chil-dren for being an “A” school for a seventh consecutive year,” Bullock said.

The maJority of americans are aware of the dangers of Ultraviolet (UV) rays to your skin, (including sunburn and skin cancer) and the importance of applying

UV blocking sunscreen and using other forms of sun protection when spending time in the sun. But how many are aware that ultraviolet rays and other harmful types of radiation from the sun are also a risk to your eyes? If you are thinking of leav-ing the house without proper eye protection, think about this: Extended exposure to harmful UV rays has been seen to be a

cause of eye damage.

UV Eye DamageExposure to large quantities of ultraviolet radiation over a short amount of

time can cause a ‘’sunburn of the eye’’, which results in pain, blurred vision or even temporary blindness. Long-term ultraviolet exposure can result in more serious eye diseases such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and others, all of which can cause vision loss. Just like the real sun, tanning beds pose a serious risk of overexposure to UV.

UV Eye ProtectionTo shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, sunglasses should block 100 percent

of UV light. Look for sunglasses labeled ‘’UV 400’’, which indicates that they block all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers (which includes both UVA and UVB rays, both known to enter the atmosphere). You also want to choose sunglasses with full eye coverage. Sunglasses with side protection can block dangerous UV rays from coming in through the rear of the sunglasses.

You don’t have to empty your pockets to have proper UV defense, but it’s essen-tial to be certain the sunglasses give full UV defense. Many less-exclusive brands do offer proper UV coverage. Further, as well as keeping your eyes protected from the sun’s harmful rays, trendy sunglasses are at the height of fashion. Pick up a pair (or two) and let the sun shine down!

The ability to exercise and compete effectively and at the highest performance possible will depend on how healthy your body is, how strong your muscles are

and how well trained you are. So avoid injuries by strengthen-ing and stretching your muscles before you exercise.

What are the parameters used by doctors and professional athletes to decide whether it is safe to play or not? How do you determine whether you are able to play or not?

If you decide to exercise and play with pain you must moni-tor the intensity of the pain during the game. If your pain allows you to run, jump or exercise without limitations and if the pain does not increase in intensity, the injury is considered in most cases stable. Most athletes can continue to exercise with caution.

If your pain is something that came slowly with the aging process then it is most likely arthritic in nature and you should change the types of exercises you do. Avoid loading, high impact exercises and do none-loading, low impact exer-cises such as cycling or swimming.

If the pain showed up suddenly it is usually something that will not allow you to exercise. If you are playing and the pain increases in intensity you should stop playing. If the pain is gone by the time you wake up the next day then it is okay to exercise and compete on that day. This indicates that the amount of tissue injury is not and has not exceeded tissue healing.

If the pain is present the next morning after you exercise you should then consult your physician to take X-rays and even a MRI Scan to find out in detail what is causing your pain. If your X-ray and MRI Scan are negative then ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medications are enough to let you return to sports. In other more serious injuries such as fractures, rotator cuff tears, meniscus tear and ACL tears, the decision to return to sports activities can be complicated. In those cases surgery may be required and the return to play may be between two to six months after surgery. This is a decision your physician will have to make with you.

In conclusion, strengthening and stretching your muscles and joints will keep you playing without pain.

reviewing your Homeowners’ insurance policy Limits Makes sound sense

Florida has some of the highest foreclosure numbers in the U.S., and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have the largest backlog of foreclosure cases in the State. In response to this backlog, all

three counties have now instituted their own system to expedite review and reso-lution of foreclosure cases, which many have referred to as a “rocket docket.” If you are at risk of foreclosure or in foreclosure proceedings, you must read this article closely or you may lose your home.

Consistent with its nickname, the new “rocket docket” system reduces the time it takes for a foreclosure case to be brought to trial. Some foreclosure cases are being set for trial by the court within 6 months of the court filing date, sometimes over the objection of the parties. From 40 to more than 100 cases are currently being scheduled for trial before the same judge, during the same trial calendar in just one day. A trial in some cases is concluded within just a few minutes without any meaningful opportunity for the homeowner to present defenses to the fore-closure case. In fact, many cases are being set for trial before the homeowner is permitted to conduct an investigation into the validity of the mortgage documents and proper transfer of foreclosure rights.

As part of the “rocket docket” initiative, retired judges have also been hired on a temporary basis solely to preside over these massive foreclosure trial calen-dars. While these retired judges are all very competent, they cannot possibly be as familiar with the facts or the law of the case as the actual division judge assigned to each foreclosure case. Attempts to postpone trial dates are routinely denied as part of the “rocket docket” initiative, even if all the attorneys agree that trial should be postponed.

In short, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have adopted a “trial at all costs” policy that is not only detrimental to the homeowner who stands to lose their home without sufficient due process, but also to the bank’s attorneys who may not have all the necessary documents to proceed with trial.

If there was ever a time for South Florida homeowners to hire an experi-enced and competent law firm to defend a foreclosure, the time is right now in view of the “rocket docket” system. There are fewer defenses being seriously considered by judges during foreclosure trials, and only limited grounds upon which a trial date will be postponed. More importantly, homeowners need to have a clear and defined plan of action in order to save their homes.

The summer is here! the first half of 2013 has simply just flown by! Historically, this is one of the most dynamic periods for real estate sales, as most homebuy-

ers and sellers typically use the summer months for relocation purposes. The major challenge that Realtors face to date is not being able to acquire properties for the abundance of buyers in the market due to the complete lack of housing inventory.

No way, you say? Just ask a friend or an associate that is in the market to buy a home and you will get a complete dis-

course on the current state of the housing market first hand. The new norm is mul-tiple offers that lead to bidding wars on homes that are priced realistically. Buyers under this circumstance usually pay more for the property than it is really worth, which in more cases than not, can cause challenges with property appraisals. The list of challenges just goes on.

What is the main cause for this predicament we are faced with? A huge major-ity of buyers are investors looking to rent out the homes, leading to low inventory and higher prices. Listings are very tight because of the vast amount of demand.

Where are these buyers coming from? There are two major groups. Foreign nationals are the first group, accounting for a large percentage of our present buyer pool. As downtrodden as one may think our economy is at present, the economy of most other foreign countries are even more distressed. Unstable political conditions in many foreign countries also make investing in the US and in South Florida, in particular, a far more secure option for foreigners. Wall Street is another major investor in the South Florida’s housing climate. Hedge fund man-agers are targeting South Florida as being one of the most attractive places to invest for the long term. Both groups hold the edge in purchasing power as most of the transactions to date have been cash transactions.

The question that seems to arise is, “Will this ever end?” Are we headed for another “bubble”? In my opinion, if you follow history and trends, we still have a few years left before this present cycle will end. Why? Unlike the events leading up to the housing crash of 2005, caused in part by a breakdown in our lending system, this cycle is fueled by a tremendous amount of cash transactions. South Florida’s climate continues to attract new residents to our state daily! With very limited space to left to build in our major metropolitan areas, housing will be in demand for quite some time!

Although the facility is small, we are still a full-service animal hospital We have brand new state-of-the-art equipment, which allows us to do things in an efficient man-ner that produces quick results The hospital has three examination rooms; a pharmacy; treatment area with laboratory; surgical suite; bathing area and isolation area It has digital radiology equip-ment, so we can read x-rays in less than a minute It also has an in-house lab, eliminating the need to send out blood work, urine and other samples In only a few minutes, results are ready and we can begin recommending a course of treatment

Where do you perform most surgeries? We perform most surgeries here in the hospi-tal in our operating room, where the patient is comfortable and familiar We refer orthopedic surgeries to a specialist in the area

How often should pets have checkups? Pets should have checkups at least once a year For older pets, twice a year is recommended Of course any time a pet is not acting normally, they should be examined

Why are annual checkups important? It is important to discover issues as early as possible and a checkup often reveals health problems that the owner had not noticed This protects the pets, as well as owners that can catch certain diseases from their pets Checkups are also a good time to update vaccinations

What do you do during a full physical exam? During a full physical exam, I look over the whole pet This includes examining the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, as well as listening to the heart and lungs, palpating (feeling) the abdomen, looking over the skin, and taking a good history from the owner to determine if any new behaviors indicate that something may be wrong

Do you recommend microchips for pets? Yes Many lost pets have been reunited with their owners with the help of microchips Anytime a pet is found and brought to a vet clinic or shelter, they are scanned If there is a microchip, they can be reunited with their family Each microchip has a unique number that is tied to the owner

Is spaying and neutering important? We work with 1 Lucky Dog Rescue (a local dog rescue organization) and we also have our own kitten rescue We often take in neonatal kittens and bottle feed them until we find homes for them We currently have three very loving one-year-old cats for adoption They have been with us since they were only a couple of months old and need a loving home
