Historically; Bombay.

In the early 1800s, the British settlement of Bombay comprised of seven islands.

It emerged as a port of importance with relations to the rest of the Asian

countries.

Being an important port on the western hemisphere of India, it served to the most

of the trade and merchant routes, connecting the west to the east.

Bombay was once the capital and the headquarters of the East India company.

Thus Bombay emerged as a commercial hub and the financial capital of India.

Evolution Of Mumbai.

Mumbai became an important base for Indian Independence movement in the

early 20thcentury.

In 1960, Bombay was incorporated as the capital of Maharashtra state.

Bombay was changed to Mumbai in the year 1996.

Seven islands were united into one mainland city by reclaiming land from the sea.

The name Mumbai, emphasizes the name of goddess mumba-devi.

Architecture.

Mumbai comprises of many historical monuments of British influence.

The gateway of India, is an example of Victorian architecture.

Buddhism reflects itself in the intricately carved elephanta caves.

The city boasts of many high rise buildings in its business district.

Some prominent architectural buildings in Mumbai are; Victoria terminus,

Rajabai Tower, The BSE, Air India tower, and the Taj mahal palace.

The Mumbai culture is a blend of traditional festivals, food, music and theatres.

Mumbai hosts many festivals of traditional importance.

Some widely celebrated festivals include, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gudi Padva,

Navaratri, makar sankranti, Christmas.

Mumbai is home to the most delectable delicacies, which comprises of spicy pavbhaji and missal pav.

Mumbai also hosts multi-cuisine restaurants of international standards.

Mumbai has emerged as a cosmopolitan city, comprising of various castes and

religion.

Mumbai acts as a financial capital of India today.

Being a cosmopolitan city, the nightlife of the city is wonderful and safe.

Mumbai boasts as the hub for the business in India.

Mumbais opportunities has always attracted people from all corners of world and

they have resided here still.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra state.

It is ruled by the legislative assembly of state.

The term of the legislative assembly is for five years.

Mumbai is critically important as a city, and thus it should have political

stability.

Maharashtra is currently governed by Ashok Chavan, representing the congress

party.

Bottlenecks Of Mumbai.

Today, Mumbai Is the worlds most crowded city.

Increase in population of the city, is one of the worst bottlenecks faced by

Mumbai.

The rise in the population has resulted in the increased number of vehicular

traffic.

Hence the pollution levels have risen drastically. Proper steps are being taken to

curb this menace.

Environmental reserves.

Excessive greed for commercialisation and industrialisation has left Mumbai of

very less green cover.

anjay Gandhi National Park protects leopards and tigers, it was a bold steptaken by the government.

The mangroves reserve are protected on the western island city, which are crucial

in protection of the island from Tsunami like disasters.
