Munich old town In the heart of the old town is the Marienplatz 1 . It takes its name from the Mary‘s Column 2 that sits in the centre of the square. The Carillion in the tower of the New Town Hall 3 still serves today as a reminder of the end of the plague with the Schäfflertanz (barrel maker‘s dance) and, in another scene, a ducal wedding with knights‘ tournaments that took place in this square. It sounds daily at 11.00am and 12 midday (plus at 5pm in summer). The Old Town Hall 4 once marked the limits of the oldest part of the city. St Peter‘s Church 5 is the oldest church in the city. The Viktualienmarkt 6 was originally a farmers‘ market, but it has since developed into a popular shopping attraction and meeting place for connoisseurs. Tourists, Munich‘s gastro stars, coffee connoisseurs and beer garden fans love the relaxed atmosphere between the stalls. On the St. Jakobsplatz is the Münchner Stadtmuseum 7 and the Jewish Centre, with the main synagogue, community hall and Jewish Museum 8 in the immediate vicinity. The towers of the Frauenkirche 9 (cathedral), the best-known symbol of Munich, tower above the rooftops to the west of the Marienplatz. The Old Court 10 was the first residence of the Wittels- bach rulers. The late Gothic oriel in the inner courtyard, also known as the ‚Affenturm‘, is particularly worth a look. The Hofbräuhaus 11 was once the exclusive brewery for the Court, and a tavern was also built there in 1828. The Hofbräuhaus has always been a popular meeting place for seasoned locals and international guests alike. It was the residence and seat of the Wittelsbach rulers until 1918. Its art collections today make it an excellent testimony to courtly culture in Europe. The Schatzkammer 14 (treasury), established in 1565 by Duke Albrecht V, contains over 1,250 works of art, including unique pieces such as the Bavarian royal insignia. There are many architectonic witnesses to the Wittelsbachs‘ love of Italian culture and architecture around the Odeonsplatz 15 . To celebrate the birth of the longed-for heir to the throne Max Emanuel, his parents, the Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife Henriette Adelaide, commissioned Italian architects in the mid-17th century to construct the Theatinerkirche 16 , the first baroque church in Bavaria. In the immediate vicinity, 200 years later, the Field Marshal‘s Hall 17 was built in the image of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. Henriette Adelaide, who originally came from Turin, also brought the genre of opera from Italy to Munich; the Bavarian State Opera 18 looks back on over 350 years of opera tradition. With the two boulevards, the Ludwigstrasse 19 and the Maximilianstrasse 20 , the Bavarian kings Ludwig I and his son Maximilian II created their own architectural legend in the 19th century. The beer garden at the Chinese Tower 31 is world-famous, and a place where tourists and locals alike soak up the peaceful atmosphere beneath the chestnut trees. At the edge of the English Garden, along the Prinzregentenstrasse, are two equally important museums: the Haus der Kunst 32 , a world-leading centre for contemporary art with changing exhibitions, and the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum 33 . A tour of the museum allows visitors to take in western periods of art from late antiquity to art nouveau. The nativity scenes collection that is housed there is one of the most valuable and comprehensive in the world. From a bridge between the two museums, spectators can watch the sporting arts of the Eisbach surfers 34 on a standing wave. The Nymphenburg palace garden connects directly to the Botanical Garden 36 . The Museum Mensch und Natur 37 in the north wing of the palace offers a playful take on natural sciences that will delight children and adults alike. From mid-2020, the museum is scheduled for expansion and renovation. The BIOTOPIA Lab in the botanical garden serves as a temporary museum. Around the English GardenThe English Garden 29 is one of the largest inner city parks in the world, featuring countless cycle routes and walking paths, idyllic streams, the Kleinhesseloher Lake 30 and several beer gardens.

Nymphenburg – plenty to exploreNymphenburg Palace 35 was the summer residence of the Bavarian electors and kings. King Ludwig II of Bavaria was born here on 25 August 1845. Attractions for visitors include the rooms of the palace, the park with its four pavilions, the Marstallmuseum and the private collection of Nymphenburg porcelain.
