MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

ARTIC MONKEYS

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT?

The concept of the video is the main character trying to cope with reality while under the influence of drugs as its interpreted within the lyrics, in the video we see the main character talking to a person called Stephanie, this is probably the person who the song is based on as the song is called “why do you only call me when your high?”

CAMERA In this music video we see a wide variety of shots, most of which are focused on the main character, using medium close ups, long shots and even a few point of view shots in which the character believes he’s seeing things which aren’t really there. I these wild fantasies he sees the girl he likes having sexual intercourse's with random people such as the man in the kebab shop and on the back of a motorcycle as well as seeing things happening to him which once again aren’t real.

SOUNDThe music video starts off with one of the groups (Artic Monkeys) songs called “do I wanna know” the music then starts to dull as the character starts to dull in alcohol, the music then fades when the character walks into the bathroom, making it seem almost as if you where there as well as when leaving a place with music into another room the music would dull too giving a sense of realism. Finally the actual song start at 1:36 mins and this is when the character realises that he might have drank to much and is on his way home.

MISE-EN-SCENEMost of the use of Mise-en-scene in the music video are directly related to the main character, for example in one of the scenes we see the character drinking shots, this could correlate to the fact that he's high which is a state of Euphoria which again connects to the lyrics and the video, as we see that later he is being affected by it. The way he is dressed is also crucial to the story, as the main character looks like your typical delinquent, the way his hair is styled to the leather jacket that he's wearing suggest that he's the type of person who would get too drunk and actually start to see all of this.

EDITINGThe editing is quite interesting, as the video doesn’t really go with the beat of the song. However this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t go well with the song, the shots we see are supported by the music and we see images that correlate quite well with the lyrics so this is not a lost cause. The editing is quite slow as each shot is also from a different angle and doesn’t stay the same through out the video, however this doesn’t disturb the actual understanding of the video as I said before the video flows quite well with the music. In the video we also see one of Sven Carlsson's modern Mythical embodiment which is the electronic shaman, In the clip we see a man randomly appear in front of the character before running away, leaving a trail of smoke behind him. (What the hell as the character been drinking?!)

In this music video I can see that Lyrical conception is as important as the video, with this I mean that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as stated by Andrew Goodwin. Even though the lyrics and the video are slightly out of time due to the intro we can clearly see that the lyrics match with the video one way or another such as when in the lyrics it says “ the mirrors image, tells me its home time” at the beginning of the video we see the character looking at himself in the mirror and we can see that he cant see straight making it interesting to find what the lyrics are saying.
