Goal / Objective:• Create an authentic learning
experience that better engages students in active learning using the EDP process.
• Focus my classroom work towards a project based /student centered learning modality that makes the course content personal and relevant.
Project Specifics1. Students will design a mouse
trap car that can cover a Minimum distance of 30 feet.
2. Students will re-design their car to gain a 30% increase in performance. (i.e. minimum distance of 39 feet.)
School Community• Fitchburg High School is
located in Central Massachusetts.
• Poor economic community, >65% of students receive free and reduced lunch.
• Average class size of 25 students.
• Target group are the sophomore conceptual physic classes.

Action Plan• Introduce the EDP and project expectations.• Research the mouse trap as a locomotive
force for a car.• Design and build the the car.• Operate and Analyze the car’s performance.• Redesign the car to achieve a 30%
improvement in distance.• Create a PowerPoint description of the
design process and car performance.
Student Deliverables
Student Will:• Produce a mouse trap car.• Keep a lab notebook that includes:
– All planning and design notes.– Analysis of the car’s performance.– Content specific notes, observations and
assignments.– reflections of the activity and the design
process.
• Project presentation.
Teacher Deliverables
• Technical assistance • Project evaluation via verbal feedback and
rubric analysis.• Academic/content specific expertise.• Supervision of student work and work
space.• Mouse trap• Some building materials
– Hot Glue, tape, connecting materials and tools as needed.
Implementation Schedule• The project will start in
September and continue through quarter 1.
• Project presentations will be given in class prior to the completion of quarter 1.
• Project specific due dates will be assigned in September.
