    1. Introduction: Worshiping Allah (SWT) Every Day

If something falls down from your schoolbag and your friend picks it up for you, what do you say? You say “thank you.” Why? Because whenever someone helps you, it is good manners to thank him. Allah (SWT) has always, and will always, help us. He created us, gave us eyes to see, ears to hear, a nose to smell, a mouth to taste, hands to hold things, legs to walk and run, and many other things. Therefore, we must thank Allah (SWT) all the time. One important way of thanking Allah (SWT) is known as namaaz. Namaaz is to pray to Allah (SWT) in a special way. It is one of the Furoo’-e-Deen (Branches of Religion).

    2. Kinds of Namaaz

There are many different types of namaaz. Some are performed every day, while others are performed only on special days. There are five very important daily namaaz. Every girl who is 9 years old and every boy who is 15 years old must perform these namaaz every day.

    • Fajr 2 rakaa-‘at

    • Zuhr 4 rakaa-‘at

    • ‘Asr 4 rakaa-‘at

    • Maghrib 3 rakaa-‘at

    • ‘Isha 4 rakaa-‘at

The rakaa-‘at will be explained in the chapter The Process of Performing Namaaz.

    3. Before Performing Namaaz

Before a person can perform namaaz, there are 5 things he should know:

ü Times of the Daily Namaaz • Fajr From true dawn up to sunrise

    • Zuhr & ‘Asr From midday noon up to sunset

    • Maghrib & ‘Isha From sunset up to midnight

ü Direction of Namaaz When you are ready to perform namaaz, what direction should you face? Everyone should perform namaaz facing the direction of the Holy Ka’bah in Makkah. This is called the qiblah. How can we find qiblah? o Ask a reliable person o Use a compass o Look at the mihrab in the masjid o Look at the direction of graves in a Muslim graveyard

ü Place of Namaaz • The place of namaaz must be paak (clean)

    • You must have permission to perform namaaz there

ü Clothing During Namaaz • The clothes you wear during namaaz must be paak

    • The clothes must not be stolen

ü Tahaarat of Clothes and Body • Your body must be clean

    • Wudhoo must be performed

    4. Preparation for Namaaz

ü Wudhoo Wudhoo is a special way to wash yourself before namaaz. You must do Wudhoo before performing namaaz. It is also good to do wudhoo before sleeping and going to the Imam-baargah. If you are angry, doing wudhoo will calm you down. In fact, it is good to try to have wudhoo all the time. Before doing wudhoo, roll up your sleeves and take off your socks. If you are wearing a watch, ring, glasses, or hijaab, take them off too. Remember to wear slippers if the floor is dirty. Wudhoo has two parts: recommended actions and waajib actions. Recommended actions are: • Washing both hands 3 times

    • Rinsing the mouth 3 times

    • Rinsing the nose 3 times

  • Namaaz – Group C 9 Abu-Taalib learning Center

Waajib actions are: • Niyyah: “I am doing wudhoo, qurbatan ilallah (for the pleasure of

    Allah [swt]).”

    • Washing the face 2 times Always wipe downdard from the forehead to chin. Make sure the water reaches every part of your face.

    • Rinsing the right arm and left arm 2 times

Always wipe downward from elbow to fingertips.

    • Masah of the head 1 time

With three fingers of your right hand, wipe the middle part of your head. Make sure you do not touch your forehead.

    • Masah of the feet 1 time

Start at the toes and wipe upward.

ü Adhaan (Call to Namaaz) After getting ready for namaaz and doing wudhoo, you should stand facing qiblah and recite adhaan. If someone else is reciting adhaan, listen carefully and repeat after them. Adhaan is called in a loud voice, so that many can hear it loud and clear. Adhaan is recited as follows:

    • 4 times:

    • 2 times:

    • 2 times:

Du’a Al-Faraj In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

O Allah, terrible was the calamity, and its evil consequences are visible, the covering has been removed, (all) hopes have been cut off, the (plentiful) earth has shrunk (with very little to spare), the heavenly blessings have been withheld. You alone can help, we refer our grief and sorrow to You, we have full faith in You, in the time of distress, as well as in good fortune. O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and on the children of Muhammad, whom we must obey as per Your command, through which we become aware of their rank and status, and let there be joy after sorrow for us, for their sake, right away, in the twinkle of an eye, more rapidly than that. O Muhammad, O ‘Ali, O ‘Ali, O Muhammad, Give me enough, because both of you provide sufficiently. Help me, because both of you help and protect. O our master, O the living Imam, HELP! HELP! HELP! Reach me! Reach me! Reach me! At once, in this hour. Be quick, be quick, be quick, O the most merciful, for the sake of Muhammad and his pure children.
